It will be sad when this theater goes..... and it will if they continue to charge $12 for a 3pm movie in the DINGIEST of theaters! This vintage theater needs a complete overhaul! The only good thing I have to say is that they show independent and foreign films as well as one step away from on video movies. There is NO parking (movie better be less than two hours to be able to park at a lot around the block), there is ONE kid selling tickets (better get there way way way before showtime), better have CASH only, and be prepared to get charged nearly $6 for a small popcorn the size of a cup of coffee that isnt even filled to the top! Then make your way upstairs (better be able to easily manage all the stairs), NOT HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE, and sit in the oldest seats known to exist. Im serious- they must be original to the theater- the ones where the springs are broken and you get poked in the butt. If someone needs to get up the entire row needs to get up- be prepared to do this several times. the MOST UNCOMFORTABLE experience you will have. If you are looking for sound or picture quality then look to your average mid-priced tv, NO dolby or surround sound at this theater. The entire place is DIRTY and sticky. The BATHROOMS are two floors down and the same as you remember in grade school, but grosser. It is too bad- the place has vintage charm and could be jorth it IF they care to update (like the Embassy). Ive been going here since I was a kid, but just NOT WORTH IT anymore... so sad to see it close to the chain theaters, their days are numbered.... It would be nice to hear WHY they wont update... Id rather they stick to independent films than even try to buy the blockbusters and renovate the place

If youre looking for a creepy, possibly haunted, cinema to be murdered at, this is the place for you! The small screen and awkward viewing angle of the film almost guarantees you will be thrown down the row of seats violently by your assailant while you are doubtless leaning forward trying to get a better view. Certainly, the strange seat arrangements provides ample opportunity for breaking your neck with a satisfying crack. And if a serial killer doesnt get you, the ages old seating will. At any moment one of the ancient springs poking into your rear will escape from the chair with such veracity as to pin you to the ceiling. This is provided the chair works and you can fit in it. The only draw back is that the sound system is too puny to hide your blood curdling screams as the end approaches. The lack of bass, or any significant speakers means your yelps of terror may echo through the halls alerting your friends to escape while they still can. On the other hand, therell probably be no one else there, so, no witnesses, at least. Oh, and cash only. So when the police come investigating, there wont be a paper trail for them to follow. Thats a plus.

West Newton has a great selection of movies -- however, the house lights came on during the key final scene at the end of a movie, completely ruining the movie. I reported the problem and was told, "theres nothing we can do -- its digital -- they come that way" which is completely ridiculous. I persisted, and was finally told the problem would be "reported." I went back a few days later, to see a different movie (another $11 cash before 6pm movie) and AGAIN the house lights came on before the movie had ended and remained on all through the credits. I reported the problem again to seemingly more alert employees, and to the owner himself, but who knows if they have fixed the problem. To anyone who loves movies (their target audience) having the house lights pop on before the movie ends & remain on throughout the credit is completely unacceptable & ruins the whole movie.

Many of West Newton Theater s movies are inaccessible to the mobility impaired. The theater desperately needs a wheelchair lift. Mobility impaired moviegoers are discriminated against. They can only get into the two first floor theaters. The ADA is 25 years old. When will the management get their act together and be responsive to a community that has a relatively high number of residents with mobility issues. Or are they ignorant to a significant percentage of their customers requests. West Newton Cinema should be boycotted until they open the theater up to 100% of the population. Their response that they looked into putting an elevator in and said it was not possible is unacceptable. A elevator is not needed - a wheelchair lift is needed. Certainly they can find the space to install a lift. I have filed a complaint with the ADA.

Ive been going to the theater for many years. On the plus side, Ive enjoyed the film selections and the willingness of the management to allow an independent film club to meet there as well as showings related to the Jewish Film festival. On the negative side, Ive seen the prices rising while the physical condition of the theater hasnt much improved (as has been stated previously). My main concern about this relates to having witnessed (on two occasions) senior attendees fall down stairs coming from the second floor. Im surprised that the owners havent been sued. The Embassy in Waltham (similar age theater) does have an elevator. Given how many elderly people attend, Im surprised that the West Newton theater hasnt installed a similar arrangement. (cheaper than being sued Im sure)

My email to theatre: I saw Gatsby yesterday. The theatre was the worst viewing experience I can recall. The screen size was ridiculously small. Worse, my knees were wedged into the sides of the seat in front of me. The most uncomfortable imaginable. For $11. From listings, I cant tell what theatre a particular movie is in. It is unlikely I will return, given the risk of being stuck in this "theatre" or something similar. Complete rip-off. And I noticed you dont give refunds after purchase. I assume because of people who go into this sort of box & want their money back. I was with my wife & son. If I had been alone, I would have walked out and asked for my money back.

0 stars. I have never been in such a place so disgusting filthy. I paid $10.00 cash for what to sit in a dirty theatre. Myself and 2 other friends went together and all three of us have been extremely sick since. This is not a coincidence and is not acceptable. We are NOT in a third world country, we are in Newton! Where is our pride? I will never go there again and neither will my friends and everyone i can tell. We were on the third floor, lighting was bad and no signs to enter. The people who have written a good review must be relatives or partners in a very lucrative CASH business!

This is the worlds worst theater. Its a decrepit, stinky, fire trap. The bathrooms are disgusting. They only take cash. The place hasnt been cleaned in decades. The equipment is old and broken. The seats are at an odd angle with respect to the screen. The carpet and floor is sticky and gross! Half the seats are broken. The management is incredibly cheap. They havent invested a dime in making the place habitable. It really should be condemned by the board of health and the fire department. I guess the citys inspectors are lazy and negligent or theyre being paid off.
