We love Academy Theater and never go anywhere else anymore! My hubby and I grew weary of paying $20 to sit in a crowded theater with screaming children and crabby attendants and be forced to pay $5 for water! (Crazy). So when we moved to Portland and discovered this little gem in our neighborhood, we decided we were quitting the block buster style theaters. In three years we have ONLY attended Academy and we love it! If ever they dont have a movie that I was wanting to see, we end up getting it through Netflix quickly. But for the most part, they are so in tune with what Portland is watching that we are guaranteed to see it there! I love that I can have specialty local foods. The food is delicious! And how cool that they even put nutritional yeast out for your popcorn (not to mention all the other seasonings)... a little personal tradition of my own. I also commend them on having water and cups out for their customers. I have a very active conscience about having to buy water bottles at other big theaters or concerts, etc... (sometimes it gets tricky sneaking in your own stuff). But at Academy, I dont have to worry about that because they already get that about me as a customer. I love their special deals on Monday and Tuesday nights. We take advantage of them! But even if we want to go on a Saturday night, I know Im not breaking the bank. Thats so important these days. I dont have kids yet, but someday I will and I appreciate knowing they have childcare available. Kudos!

Went to see Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, it was my first visit to Academy. First the good: Loved the feel, friendly staff, clean, comfy seats, had to wait for another pizza, but that was delicious as well, for fairly reasonable prices. The screens are really small, but so are the theaters so it isnt too bad. I wouldnt want to sit anywhere near the back though. The not so good: The popcorn tasted a bit burnt, the staff was friendly, but barely listened to my order, I repeated it twice, and they still got it wrong (I hate ice in my soda, and asked for no ice twice). The other guests were not great, There was a person with their bike helmet, massive bag, and snacks who came in and out several times yanking on seat backs and hitting people with all their stuff, then, around us we had lots of children, the ones behind us were old enough, but talked through the entire movie, the one on one side got up a half dozen times for the bathroom or food or something, and to the other side was a very young child, parents kept covering her eyes, on top of the mom trying to explain everything in 3yr old terms. Even on a Wednesday, the theater was packed, which isnt a big deal with peaceful people, but this rowdy bunch made the movie not nearly as enjoyable as it should have been. I will go back, but I will only go back for something R rated that hopefully wont have any kids/parents, then the one or two annoying adults wont be such a big deal.

Beautiful, historic 3 screen theater in Montavilla. $4 movies, 10 beers on tap, cheap concessions, and Flying Pie Pizza from next door. You can even order sushi from Miyamoto Sushi! Kid friendly, with babysitting available for children 6 months to 8 years old. Movies shown are ones that have been out for a few months, so its more affordable to wait rather than spending 10-15 bucks in a Regal. Watch any 2 movies for $6 on Mondays, or buy one ticket get one free on Tuesdays. They also do special events like the Beer and Movie Festival (BAMF) showing classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ghostbusters, Conan, Star Trek II, and many others. Walking Dead fans can also get their fix with two AMC showings on Sundays during the season. Currently Academy is raising funds to switch from film to digital equipment, so help support the independent theaters!

Portland is known for its community oriented movie theaters that also serve up both pizza, and a collection of quality micro-brews. Academy Theater is now my favorite out of all of them, not merely because I live in the neighborhood and they are within walking distance, but for the atmosphere, the interesting movies they feature, and that they are in such an interesting, up-and-coming area in the heart of the Montavilla neighborhood. They serve up great pizza from Flying Pie (which is right next door to them), but its not unusual to find beers from the deadhead-owned Montavilla Brew Works right across the street. The Academy really supports the local community, and is an integral part of it. Not to mention the ticket prices, that are very inexpensive compared to the large, corporate movie theaters.

Id never been to academy theater and Ive good things so i decided to go. however Im in high school and dont have a car and live 5 miles away. so i decided to bike. upon arrival i go to buy my ticket to go see total recall which i have been looking forward to seeing. when i ask for 1 ticket the box office guy asks me if Im with anyone and i say no. he then say sorry you cant see the movie. i say i though it was pg 13, to which he replies, yes it is but you cant go to a movie without an adult. Ok hold on, Im 17 and you wont let me go see a pg 13 movie?! what kind of policy is that?! its not like Im gonna go bring my mom to every movie i see!? so the reason i rated everything a 0 is that they wouldnt even let me in.

This theatre is a gem. The staff are all wonderful; patient, positive and engaged. The food is first-rate, from Flying Pie pizza to exceptional popcorn, all at better prices than the competition. The whole place is always clean, with very nice restrooms. The seats are comfy, even for this oldster with a touchy back. Last, but certainly not least, the variety and quality of films is marvelous, with an excellent sound system and foreign film showings both dubbed and subtitled (at different times, of course). The only time I ever had trouble parking was on a Sunday afternoon due to a thriving farmers market (an indication of a healthy, welcoming neighborhood). Highly recommend this fantastic, independent theatre!

The Academy Theater is the only movie theatre that I know of that has childcare. This friends, is invaluable to myself as a parent. My son LOVES their babysitters, the extensive amounts of trains, books, crafts and whatever else they have up there. This evening, I watched Jane Eyre while my son spent time with one of the childcare providers. When I came up to get him, she had made him three paper airplanes and they were watching the film reels spin (the projectors are adjacent to the childcare room). My son was totally happy and content--and I was able to have a little alone time at the movies. It was a perfect evening. Thank you Academy!!

I saw a movie I never thought I would ever be able to see on the big screen (Fantastic Planet) here the other day and was blown away. Both by the movie and how much I loved the theater itself. This place feels like what another old theater in southeast in Portland could have been. It was charming in the way they have preserved the old features instead of updating. I did not have a chance to sample them this time, but they serve great pizza from Flying Pie next door, and what looked to be an amazing beer selection. Plus comfy seats, great sound and a price you cant beat! What is not to love here?
