There are 2 things Ive learned about Nickelodeons weekday matinees, and Im compelled to share them here. First, these matinees are overwhelmingly popular with senior citizens, and they all love to chit-chatter and talk back at the screen. A lot! Many restlessly fidget and rattle their popcorn bags, and there are often wheezing and coughing fits. (Honestly, it all gets pretty out of control, and the only way to address all of it is to stop the film and scold the entire audience. That aint gonna happen, so...what can you do?) Second, weekday matinees can be their MOST expensive ticket, because you have to pay an extra $2 - $3 for 2 hours (or more?) at the parking meters downtown. This often drives the total cost to nearly $11 (for non-members), which often makes Nickelodeons weekday matinees the priciest ticket in town. (Please, I really do like The Nick. I will keep going, and I urge you to go, too. These are just things I want you to keep in mind before you go on a weekday afternoon, and that you wont find mentioned in other reviews here.)

The Nick is one of Columbias crown jewels. A small movie theatre showing various smaller/indie films as well as hosting an array of curated material. One of the curated sets thats out in 2016 is called "First Friday Lowbrow Cinema Explosion", in which on the first Friday of the month they show super-tacky films such as the Vanilla Ice classic "Cool As Ice". Just a fun and quirky place to catch some great films. As far as refreshments they have very reasonably priced popcorn/beer/wine, which makes for a great beginning or ending to a date night. The Nick also offers a membership program, which youd be silly not to get if you find yourself coming back for entertainment. They also host the Indie Grits Film Festival, which just celebrated its 10th year. This was the first year Ive gone, and it was great fun. From films to events, it was a great time, would definitely recommend checking out the lineup when its going on, and checking out some of the events they host during it.

Ive always loved the Nick, but theyve really outdone themselves with the new location on Main Street. Great movies, delicious concessions (that you can feel good about afterwards), craft beer on tap (Westbrook...mmm), wine as well. Want to bring your own food instead? Maybe some candy from Mast General, or a pizza from Village Idiot? Theyre totally cool with that too. And did I mention the friendly and fantastic viewing experience? Or the super comfortable seats? If youre looking for something to do for date night, or just want to escape for a couple hours at a movie theater that feels less like a mall, and well, more like a movie theater, you cant beat the Nick. It really is a Cola gem.

Nickelodeon is the best movie experience ever. It is a a non-profit organization with much of the staff made up of volunteers who are always there to help. Even the audience seems always to be a well behaved higher class, with minimal talking or outburst during the show. International, socially conscious, new releases, and classic movies are shown, sometimes with informative discussions afterward. Ive been a member of Nickelodean for 4 years and the friendliness of the staff and other members there make me feel like family.

Great Art House theater, the only one in SC. They get all sorts of indie films. They let you bring in Ive cream from Sweet Cream which is a few store fronts up Main. Easy parking either on the street or in one of the Taylor Street garages. If you want a drink with your movie, they serve beer and wine, plus popcorn, candy, and baked goods. Get your tickets early as the theater is popular and may sell out. Always a good time.

My go to theater in Columbia. Only two screens, but they pick their movies really well. Hosts loads of special events and has great food and drink options. Staff is super friendly and the crowd they draw is wonderful. Never had a phone interupt a screening, never had much chatter. Absolutely recommend seeing a film here, even if you dont know what youre going to see. You wont be disappointed with what theyre showing.

Whats there not to love about the Nick? Its like a Hollywood Starlet: its heyday was way-back-when, then a period of neglect followed, but spurred on by support from the community and popular demand, its been going thru a Renaissance, which has been coaxing other businesses along Main to do the same. Meanwhile, the employees stay cool and classy and the selection of flicks is solid.

Ive been going to Nickelodeon since it was at its old location. Its a great theatre, they have a great staff, and, most importantly, they are the one place in Columbia where you can see recent films that arent the Avengers and classics. The new digs are just dandy. They also sell snacks and booze if thats what you like when you go to watch a movie.

Great non-profit theater in Columbia. They always have a great selection of films each week ranging from dramas to interesting documentaries. Concession prices are very reasonable and they usually have a nice selection of craft beers on tap. Its a fun date night to have a nice dinner on Main and just walk over to the Nick.

The Nick is one of my favorite places in Columbia and its about to get even better once they move to their new location in the restored Fox Theater on Main Street. They play independent & foreign films that you wont see anywhere else in town.

This private local theatre in the heart of downtown has its own charm. Small theatres with a flexibility of having a drink while watching a movie. And those special screenings of documentaries, short films and of course regular ones too.

The Nickelodeon has movies i want to see which are often more reflective than the popular action movies I would not go to. Please notice that Amazon Smile will donate to the Nick...just put Columbia Film Society in the charity line.

Great comfortable atmosphere. Easy going and helpful staff. Small interesting beer selection that changes regularly. You can feel right at home in the cinema with fifty other people hanging out.

Love this local theater. Be sure to arrive early as the theater always fills up fast. You dont want to be that person trying to find a seat while the lights are out! Their popcorn is a must!

Eclectic movie offerings not found elsewhere in Columbia. Reasonable concession prices. Very friendly staff. I also love the personal movie notes offered by a staff member before the movie.

Love this place! Indie film with fun introductions from staff/volunteers, craft beer, and unbuttered popcorn with nutritional yeast. And beautiful expanded location on Main Street.

A good place to catch the good production that may not be the most box office friendly. The staff greets the guests before the start of the film, just as it should be done!

Dont go see a movie anywhere else. This place has the best selection of movies with very clean small theaters. Its the prime of local movie theaters. Keep it local yo

Get your indie films here, or just for a non-corporate theatre experience. Unique experiences like the indie grits festival or the monthly low-brow midnight movies
