Was here the other weekend for a show, St. Andrews is a great venue in terms of size and acoustics. I have seen many shows here over the years. I have heard of people having their cars broken into when parking for a concert, I would recommend taking a cab, being dropped off, or even parking in a watch / gated lot, or a parking garage and walking. Its not in that bad of an area, positioned right next door to Jacobys and Sweetwater Tavern. The venue itself if 4 stars, its the below that makes it 3 stars. By far the biggest complaint would be the bar / drink service. The short bar only usually has 1 bartender, who literally moves down the line and starts over again like some sort of human typewriter. The big bar, which is about double the size, only has 2 bartenders working, who like the 1st bartender function as a human typewriter, going slowly down the line to the middle and then starting all over again. It can take FOREVER to get any drink; water, pop, beer, liquor. You name it, you are at the mercy of this slow understaffed system.

I purchased tickets online to attend the Grits and Biscuits event at this venue on Oct. 21 and was not allowed entry because the Fire Marshall mandated that the building was at capacity as they oversold the show. I was told by the working manager that we would definately be able to get a refund by contacting Ticketmaster if I purchased tickets online. In attempting to contact Ticketmaster to receive a refund I was told that no one from the venue filed a report for this incident and therefore could not process a refund to me. When you attempt to call the venue you are just left with the frustrating task of trying to navigate their automated directory which leads to many non-working extensions--Absolutely ridiculous. Think very hard before attending this venue as you run the risk of paying for a show that has been oversold and being given the run around when trying to get your refund. I had friends who traveled in order to attend this show with me and even though we purchased tickets we were not able to attend the event.

I have always liked going to Saint Andrews. It has good sound and a very friendly security guard staff. I like how you can stand upstairs and watch the show, its very cool. The male bartender downstairs in the Shelter with a buzz cut and goatee kinda sucks though. He is slow as can be and not friendly. And oh, if you are going to get some booze, I would just get 24oz of PBR because its 6 bucks vs a 12oz of Blue Moon/similar beer is 5. I parked on Congress and Beaubin and my car door got a hole drilled into the lock and my girlfriends purse was stolen out of the trunk that had many valuables. It happened right after we parked and when we left the show there was a guy who helped us park and he said "open door policy" and said our trunk was open. After he said that he split and we never saw him again. I WOULD PARK AT GREEKTOWN CASINO PARKING GARAGE. Its very close, well lighted, free AND has security cameras everywhere.

The building consists of 2 separate concert spaces, the upper being for the more well-known and more populated artists that come through, called "St. Andrews Hall". The somewhat lesser know venue is located in the basement and is reserved for shows that may not be as big as the ones hosted upstairs. The basement level is called "The Shelter". Overall, the entire building is well air-conditioned and doesnt generally get too crowded. Restrooms (Mens) are sub-par, but youre not their for a good toilet. The upstairs venue usually has 2 bars on either side of the standing area, while the downstairs has one large 360-degree bar. The sidewalk in front of the hall is gated off and used as a smoking section during concerts. Venue has had plenty of good and well-known artists come through and play. I have yet to have a bad experience here.

I saw Jeremy Enigk here on 7/30/2016. The sound was bad. Im sure the equipment was decent, but the engineer wasnt attentive. Im an audiophile, so I notice these things. The opening act was too quiet. I was in the front row, and it was difficult to hear him over people talking back at the bar. An audio compressor wouldve evened out the levels. Jeremy had brittle "s" sounds. It would have been easy for the sound person to turn down the offensive frequency or use a de-esser. Finally, the staff upstairs was cleaning up after an early show that had just ended. They were pounding, walking heavy, and moving equipment during the entire show. It was quite unpleasant.

Staff was a bit rude, but the show was excellent. They didnt pass out wristbands properly (at least for will-call) and while the bar allowed me to purchase liquor (which they should - Im 25), I was harassed by security for drinking it. I was told I would be thrown out, even after trying to show him my ID. He just kept repeating that I needed a wristband, but refused to tell me WHERE to get one, so I had to pass my drink off to a friend... Who also didnt have a band, but this guy didnt seem to care about him drinking. St. Andrews either needs better security or do a better job of making sure that people get bands. Something.

Small (which is a good thing)and crowded (which is a bad thing) this venue was still great to see a band in. The main floor looked like a horribly crowded place to try to see a band from, get a drink, or maneuver out of to go to the bathroom. That said I had opted to pay an extra 20 dollars to get access to the second floor. Im not a big fan of the extra charge but it was more than worth it. You get your own bartender up their that was never swamped. Bathrooms with much shorter lines. There also isnt a bad view possible from the second floor. Great time and great option for if you want an easier experience.

There is a con artist that owns the parking lot attached to the venue. St. Andrews claims they do not own/have any parking lot and their employees dont park there. Several times I have been swindled for various amounts, the last time a middle-eastern looking man charged me $15 to park in this lot, then two months later I received a parking ticket from the city of Detroit. The venue itself is okay. Ive seen a bunch of shows here. Drinks cost too much. The sound is okay I guess. They really need to do something about this criminal, because Im considering not ever going back after this.

So much that could be said about this place whether it be about the for history and influence its had on music in the D as well as the world or just your own personal experiences regardless this is one of those places that no matter why went youll never forget it. This is one of those unique places that is alive and has its own heart beat and soul and you feel it from the time youre waiting in line, till when you leave. Sounds crazy? maybe, but thats best way I can explain it. If you been here then you already know. Dont ever pass up the chance to party here!!
