AMC La Jolla 12 is a theater that offers a mix of mainstream and arthouse films. It has been renovated to include power leather recliner seats and a bar. However, it often lacks big-name, first-run movies. The theater is popular for its reasonable ticket prices and comfortable seating, but some customers have issues with its movie selection and age restrictions.

I am a frequent movie-goer and have been to almost all of the theaters in San Diego. This theater is always my first choice! I try to see movies here whenever I can. This theater has now spoiled me. I love having assigned seats so that I dont have to get there early, the seats themselves are super comfortable and recline (in ALL of the theaters). You definitely want to buy your tickets online though- or maybe a couple of days in advance in person. Since it is reserved seating, you dont want to get stuck with seats all the way in the front or on the side. Also, this is a pretty popular theater, so you dont want to show up and all of the tickets be sold out. They have definitely upgraded their food menu, plus- they have recently obtained a different kind of liquor license so that you can bring your drink (from one of the two bars in the theater) into any of the theaters! The ONLY bad things you could possibly say about this place: this theater doesnt always have All the newest movies (though they do have some), and you cant use the Fandango movie pass at this theater. Bottom line: Better than a regular movie theater because- Assigned seats, quality of the reclining seats, standard AMC food menu, same price as normal AMC tickets, alcohol allowed in every theater. Worse than regular movie theaters because- Not every newest movie Better than Cineplois, The Loft, and other "luxury theaters" because- Tickets are standard AMC price (about half the cost of these other theaters), the quality of the seats are comparable, and did I mention how much cheaper these tickets are?! Plus if you have an AMC stubs card, you save a lot more money versus going to one of these other luxury theaters. Worse than Cineplois, The Loft, and other "luxury theaters" because- The food isnt as great as the "luxury" theaters and usually neither are the drinks, but then again- about half the price... you get what you pay for (which I am totally fine settling for the huge monetary savings). They dont always have the newest movies. There are no fancy features like bringing your food to your seat during the movie (which kind of bugs me anyways, so thats not really a con for me). Thats pretty much it. This is why AMC La Jolla is my favorite theater and number one choice for theaters in San Diego (although there is another just like it in Chula Vista, if youre closer to that area).

ADULT THEATRE DONT BRING KIDS UNDER 21 YEARS OF AGE OR YOU COULD HAVE YOUR DAY RUINED IF YOU DONT HAVE MUCH TIME.... MY REVIEW IS ACCURATE! HERE IS THE SCOOP, MY DAUGHTERS OLDER WANTED TO SEE VERONICA MARS? MOM LEFT ME WITH 3 YEAR OLD AFTER CHOOSING THE BEST TIMES SO I DONT LOSE BUSINESS AS I AM SELF EMPLOYED. WELL ANYWAY THEY GET THERE AND FIND OUT THAT YOU HAVE TO BE 21 YEARS OLD TO WATCH MOVIE. THEY DO HAVE TIMES TO WATCH A MOVIE ON PHONE SYSTEM BUT DONT MENTION YOU NEED TO BE 21 AND OVER. THUS SCREWED ME OUT OF BUSINESS WHILE HOME WATCHING YOUNG ONE. I DONT MIND WATCHING MY KID BUT LIKE TO PLAN IT AS AM THE BREAD WINNER FOR FAMILY. THESE JACK AS.ES ( A GAL MANAGER COULD HAVE AT LEAST GAVE US FREE TICKETS FOR SCREWING ME OUT OF MISSED BUSINESS SALES AND FOR MY WIFE AND KIDS HAVING TO TAXI AROUND THE THEATRE FOR HOURS UNTIL A YOUTH AGED SHOWING IS AVAILABLE. AT MINIMUM $100 LOST BUT EVEN A COMPENSATION FOR COST IS JUST A SUCKER TO GET PEOPLE LIKE ME TO NOT TELL THE TRUTH. ALCOHOL IS GOOD BUT WHEN IT MESSES THINGS UP FOR YOU AND PEOPLE AROUND YOU IT MIGHT BE GOOD TO STOP USING IT. ( MAYBE THEATRE SHOULD STOP SELLING IT THEN! ) THE FUNNY THING IS THAT THEY HAVE KID SHOWS ON DURING ALCOHOL TIME.....) I THINK 2 POTENTIAL DRINKERS FOR THE 11 AM SHOWING...... FREAKING STUPID BUSINESS MODEL FROM MY POINT OF VIEW..... MAYBE THEY ARE MAKING MILLIONS? WHO KNOWS NOT US BECAUSE WE DROVE FROM OUT OF TOWN TO SEE THIS MOVIE FOR THE SHOWING TIMES AND WILL NEVER REVISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN I ASS U ME!

I went there to watch Wreck-It Ralph (2D) today. It was fine. But there were some glaring issues. As usual, the drink was WAY overpriced. But thats common, so I wont rant about it. The picture quality was bad. Some objects were blurry - as in, doubled with ghosting. It was kind of like seeing a 3D movie without glasses, but not as bad. It was definitely annoying to read on the screen. But this wasnt particularly annoying throughout the movie. The sound was also slightly louder than Id have liked. I dont know if the theater picks them, but the trailers shown before the film were those of animated/childrens movies. Sure, there were families with children watching Wreck-It Ralph with it, but as an adult, I found it kinda annoying to see childrens film trailers back-to-back. The hall itself was comfortable and premium-feeling. But the backrest was (weirdly) small and didnt let me rest my head properly on it. The refreshments area looked cheap and cluttered. The food/drink listings were downright ugly. The ticket was cheap ($6), but that was because the movie released several weeks (months?) ago.

Pros: comfy seats, relatively clean, pre-selected seating, prices are better than some other La Jolla theaters, helpful service (we were offered a refund at one point when our seats were so terrible that we couldnt see the film) Cons: incredibly strange movie selection--its like it cant decide if it wants to be an arthouse theater or a mainstream movie theater, and as such kind of fails at both. Despite having a typical AMC vibe, it rarely has any big-name first-run movies--it didnt even have Star Wars. You can see foreign films here (especially Chinese ones), but again, its a crapshoot as to which youre going to get. I honestly liked it when I could go here, but I almost never could actually go here to see the film I wanted to see. It was extremely frustrating to have to go to Arclight (so expensive, terrible parking) or drive all the way to Mission Valley to see a multi-billion dollar box office smash. I guess my tastes arent fancy enough to go to the movies next to a Ralphs.

This theater is an enigma. It was renovated with power leather recliner seats and a bar that makes stiff drinks. Its even possible to reserve your seat online. The tickets are even sanely priced, and they dont seem to care about outside beverages. So naturally this should be a movie-watchers mecca, right? Well...I am giving this theater 3 stars because they dont ever seem to have any blockbusters. It doesnt make sense to not have blockbuster films here after such a well-done renovation. Instead, this place houses those films that skirt the line between an a-list movie and the independent realm. The most recent movie I watched at this location was Maleficent. Since then, I just havent been motivated to watch any of the films this place is showing. Ive seen many movies, but sadly none here. If they brought larger films here, one would imagine that theyd see attendance skyrocket.

This is by far my favorite movie theatre. The incredible reclining chairs and plenty of aisle room have no equal and the before noon bargain prices are terrific. I have only one easy to correct complaint. When you go there on a weekday, before noon to see a film at the bargain price. The theatres are usually way less than half full for obvious reasons. However, when we went to see "Irrational Man" recently we got stuck in line to buy a ticket for over 15 minutes and missed the previews because in the two ticket lines the elderly couples couldnt make up their minds what seats they wanted to chose on the provided computer screen. This is crazy. I understand the need for reserve seating for popular films in the evening. But any screening on a weekday before noon should just have open seating, like all other theatres.
