Its fun to go here on Free museum days (First Wednesdays and Third Saturdays). The third Saturdays also have special craft activities that you can participate in. They are aimed for families and children, but I often enjoy decorating clay plates, making a sculpture, etc as well. The museum staff is very friendly and explains the exhibits that are going on. UMFA is well-curated, and even though it doesnt have any singular stand alone pieces, it is does have some beautiful works by famous artists such as Renoir and Singer-Sargent. These master works are combined with unique exhibits such as Mayan pottery, Spanish art, and an Egyptian sarcophagus room. It is well worth the low price of admission (especially on aforementioned free days). Let it be said that I actually like the streamer room. Sure, it could probably be used for a lot more art in the large hall, and it isnt my favorite Feher piece, but it is pretty awesome to have a Feher piece at all. His work is certainly modern contemporary, which many people dont appreciate; thats fine. But he is one of the biggest names in the US of this generation, and the pink streamers are just another example of his simple trademark colorful design. For the people that dont appreciate the neon pink streamers - at least he didnt paint an entire city lot pink here as he did in New York. There is also a small cafe in the front where you can get cookies, scones, and coffee, which is a great way to end your visit, or hang out while the kids are doing crafts or listening to stories. The parking is the one thing that leaves more to be desired, but if you go on the weekend there is plenty of free parking since permits arent enforced.

Decent art museum for Utah, but I dont know that Ive ever been to a less kid-friendly museum. My wife and I went with our 4 children, ages 1-7. The staff appears to be made up primarily of university students who have no idea how to react to or interact with young kids. We felt like we were being closely watched from the moment we walked through the door. After one child got too close to one exhibit (that should have been roped off if the museum didnt want anyone to accidentally step on the "art" pile of dirt), a member of museum security was assigned to follow us. By then we felt like we had to leave, so we did. We understand standard art museum protocol, and tried to teach this to our children. However, security and the museum docents usually beat us to the punch on the "no touching" and "shhh". If youre trying to raise culturally conscious children, try somewhere else, because this isnt the place to do it.

This is a nice museum in a nice building; no flashy architecture by starchitect like gehry or piano but self-affacing building shows art very well. they do not have big name art like picasso or monet but small though comprehensive collection of european and american paintings as well as sculpture from asia and africa. full details on their website. i did not eat at their cafe. free parking. great place to spend a few hours if you like art museums.

Hang out underneath the Pink Strips of Flagging Tape and watch the strips move organically to the sights and sounds surrounding it. You can even join in on Tuesdays for a free yoga session which is pretty cool for this museum to offer! Trust me, these are just one of the ways to enjoy Tony Fehers installation but make sure to arrive after Spring 2017 when UMFA re-opens.

We visited this museum today and spent all day looking at the exhibits. The details says the admission is free, but it is not. The cost for entry was fourteen dollars for my wife and I, I believe if you are a student, faculty or staff out would be free. Other wise expect to pay. It is worth it cost thou, like I said we spent the better part of our day at this museum.

The museum is nice and modern, but I was very disappointed with the amount of paintings and items they had on display. Especially considering the $14 entrance fee. I am a huge museum and art lover, and rarely do I begrudge entrance fees to such places. But in this case, I regretted spending the $14 and wished I could have had my money back. Such a shame!

We went in 2011. Took the whole family. It was nice, but we were quite disappointed with the value for the money, esp. given the size of the collection and the time we spent. From the comments below it sounds like youre renovating. Consider reducing the kids fees upon reopening.

Small museum. No relevant art. Certainly not worth 13$ for an adult. I would go once, if it were free. Children are also 9$ btw. Go to another museum instead, unless you are a student going there for a homework assignment. Not recommended.

This is a small museum with a diverse collection of art from many cultures. Its on the campus of the University of Utah. Plan on one to two hours to take in the gallery.

Going as a student is free. I enjoy the local art featuring Western landscapes. Traveling exhibits are sometimes fun, but sometimes not. Try to find a discount.

Disappointing collection, underwhelming curation. I felt like the whole place was on the smaller side with a poor use of space. Not worth the admission.

Not the greatest place. The docents are very stuffy and have a hard time answering questions. Google and wikipedia answered most of my questions.
