Disclaimer: I was offered a $5 dollar coupon off my next game if I left a review, but that does not affect my review of Codescape. I had never done an escape room before and was always curious what all the fuss was about. Me and my Fiancé were bored one day and accidently found this place on Yelp, so decided to give it a shot after all of the reviews and were pleasantly surprised! We had A LOT of fun!!!!!!!!!! After flipping through the reviews, we decided to try "Shipwrecked" as our first room. The room was very detailed and designed well, and we were taken back by how many different levels and rooms there were. The puzzles are designed cleverly and build upon items and information from the previous rooms, so you have to pay attention to everything you see and use. We had one hour to figure out how to escape multiple rooms and were given 3 hints if we asked for it. We got a great team and completed "Shipwrecked" with 6 minutes to spare! Anthony, who was overseeing the game, was super nice! *Hint: For the first room, pay close attention to the story given before you start! The only problem I had, and this was mentioned by previous reviewers, was that we had too many people. The max is 10 and I honestly think the max should be closer to 5-6. The reason for this is that it gets cramped and confusing with so many people, and I noticed a lot of people simply following the leader and not having a chance to speak up or give input on the puzzles. I work in consulting and when it comes to group effort/team games, there is definitely a max number you should have and 10 is too high. Groups comprising more than eight or nine people are inefficient because they allow some members to coast (social loafing), and their size allows cliques and sub-teams to form which is exactly what happened in my team. Luckily me and my fiancé helped lead the team, so our experience was awesome, but I can imagine some of the shy team members we had might not have had the same experience as us. Thats my only gripe! (Sorry, I had to deduct a star for this one!) Overall though, we had a BLAST and the room was nice and challenging for us. An hour went by WAY TO QUICKLY. We plan on coming back and trying the rest of the rooms. I will update my review to cover all of the rooms once we have done them all.

I visited this escape room on Valentines day with my girlfriend. I thought itd be a great night, unfortunately it wasnt. When we got there we thought there was other people going to share the experience but apparently they cancelled so it was just us. I told the guy at the counter this was our first ever escape room. He said it was a tough room but if we wanted to go we could. We thought itd be fun so we went in. After using half the hour given in just the first room of 4 we realized this was truly not meant for just 2 people and surly not for a beginner. After the hour ended the employee showed us the final puzzle conclusion and said thanks for coming. Then vanished in a back room. As we walked out I told my girlfriend I felt we just had been had. For our first experience in an escape room, just 2 of us in their hardest room, I felt he should have turned us away. He should have said we should come back on another night when there were more people and/or a more beginner room. That would have been an honest response and I would have respected that. On a limited budget going to dinner and an escape room I thought would be a fun night. We went home disappointed.

This was my second escape room experience. The first was with a different local company. While a great experience, the production value of this companys room is amazing. Seriously. The puzzles use great mechanics and the aesthetics make you feel present in the scenario. Even the details of the locks, etc. The only thing I think could use some work are minor issues. I would recommend locking your cell phones in the locker. Sure you can use your flashlight but also allows for a way to take shortcuts. Also, some type of better introduction. The story was rushed. Another thing I would recommend is the entry doors. Again, merely aesthetics but when in the room I think it would be great if you look back at the door you just entered from the hallway to no longer look like a basic office door but like a wall in the room. Minor things, in no way would they cause me to not recommend this place. While I would love to try other companies in the area, I really want to come back to this one with others because the room was beautifully done. (I did Shipwrecked, BTW)

Came for a work field trip. We did "The Experiment" roo. Which is the most difficult. It was so much fun. It is a great team-building adventure because it forces everyone to actively working towards solving multiple clues simultaneously to move forward. Added bonus is its the immediate neighbor of Catwaba Brewery. After breaking out of the room or running of time ( trust me its A-OK, the easiest room has a 35% success rate) crab some craft brews and debrief about the whole experience. Its not your traditional team-building experience- its much more immersive where everyone has an opportunity to contribute. I think thats what made our time here so awesome. They have 3 other rooms. Rate is $28/per person. Im definitely going back. I meet see you there. Note: if youre claustrophobic I wouldnt advise this. Read the descriptions of the rooms to gauge how you could potentially feel. *Caution the stairs are steep a shake * Thats the only thing I did not like.

Codescape is the best of the three escape room establishments Ive been to in Charlotte. The rooms are larger and more intricate. Progression mechanisms are not just locks with combinations - a healthy dose of magnetic doors with triggers means its not just a number crunch. most importantly all the rooms have been designed to be solved in parallel. This means that a well organized team can work quickly and even with 10 people in the room nobody feels left out. The three rooms here are my favorites in the city. The staff has been extremely friendly and helpful. My only gripe: I wish that buying out a room provided some sort of discount. Bringing 10 people should not cost twice as much as five. Id love if codescape made getting friends together more affordable - just set the buyout price to more than the average number of participants.

Went with my girlfriend and a friend from work today to try our luck in the newly opened Deep Space room. Ive never done an escape room before but I was definitely excited to try this out. Codescape definitely lived up the the hype. After explaining the rules to us and our backstory we were led into our room and the game began. The design was great from the lighting and atmosphere to the soundwork. I really enjoyed the puzzles which were complex and challenging but not frustrating. We actually managed to escape the room and the feeling of accomplishment is wonderful. I had such a great time I think Im actually coming back tonight to try my hand at another room. Its addictive. Long story short it was a great experience and I cant wait to do this again.
