Great "old school" theatre...unlike a lot of the multiplex theaters, the screen at the Varsity is larger, much larger, than the home entertainment systems many have today. The sound is good and not too loud. And the movie selection is excellent and changes every couple of weeks so there is ample opportunity to see the current movie and the wait is not horribly long before the next feature presentation is available. Plus, there are a number of good eating establishments in the neighborhood - Gazalis is right next door and specializes in delicious Mediterranean specialties; Jimmy Johns is just around the corner and can always be counted on for a good sandwich, freaky fast; and just the next block east is Fernandos, one of the best kept secrets in Des Moines, serving exceptional Mexican fare. Great area for an afternoon or evening out!

Varsity is the best way to see a movie. The pace is unhurried and familiar. You can still get a bag of popcorn for under 2 dollars. Also, you dont have to wade through a half hour of previews or commercials. Most of their showings are thoughtful and entertaining, sometimes with exclusive showing of movies you wont see anywhere else in DSM. 5 stars.

I love these classic theaters! The screen does not overwhelm you. Just great music before the scheduled starting time, no blaring add, few previews since they only have 1 screen. They recently upgraded to digital. This is a well maintained classic theater plus affordable concessions! I usually eat at Gusto Pizza on Ingersol before the show.

Varsity Theater is a well-run, clean, quality theater tucked across the street from Drake University (where its been for years). The ticket price ($7.50--on a Saturday night), concession prices ($1.35 for a small popcorn), friendly staff, and the money and time saved on a short drive make the Varsity Theater a true Drake Neighborhood gem.

Unique, small theater across the street from Drake University ... All their movie picks are excellent... Family-owned (say hi to Denise at the popcorn counter, shes very friendly.) Local artist hang shows in the lobby, take time to enjoy those too. You cant go wrong with the Varsity ambience, movie selections, or matinee prices. :)

A great theater experience. Best prices in town, they show a lot of great films, and they use real butter on their popcorn. If you love film and the classic movie going experience you must go to the Varsity.

A historic, cheap theater next to Drake University. There is literally only one theater, but they typically show films that arent shown just about anywhere else in the city. Check it out!

A quaint little theater that reminds me of going to the movies as a kid. Takes cash only but there is a bank right down the street with a drive up ATM.

Great films, low ticket prices ($5.00 matinee) really low concession prices - easily the best buy for films in Des Moines!

Old theaters are so charming! Their prices are a little more reasonable than the fancy ones out in the suburbs.
