Yurt Review: Here is info to supplement the short list of features found on the state site. More details about the Yurts: These cylindrical structures are canvas on a frame with a sturdy, lockable front and rear door. The doors have fixed (cant open) glass windows and wood blinds. The Yurts have a window on each side of the front door and the rear door (4 in all). The windows have a permanent screen, a transparent thick plastic layer held in place by velcro and an opaque out layer that rolls up & held in place with durable plastic clasps like you see in typical backpacks. Most (all?) have a wooden front (parking lot side) porch and a back (lake-side) porch, with decent square footage. The lake side porches feature two power outlets, lights built into the railing on each side, a small table and two comfortable, wooden deck chairs. INSIDE the yurt are 4 outlets distributed equally around the circular walls, a bunk bed with a full (and comfortable) upper mattress, and a convertable futon-type sofa on the lower portion. Also a separate, virtually identical stand-alone futon-type sofa. Though the futons both convert to a full (not quite queen) size bed, theyre made of a firm foam that doesnt quite meet mattress requirements of mature adults. Furniture in the room includes a rolling high-top table with two storage shelves built in and 4 bar stools with oval, curved wooden seats. Two ends of the table provide a great bar-stool space, yet a family of 4 can use all the stools at the table though only knee room for two. The built-in heater is mounted to the floor. Ours didnt work but a portable replacement was provided for our yurt. There is a tall portable lamp in the room and a small 3-shelf unit. Finally, there is a medium sized table suitable as a coffee table which we used with the futon in sofa mode. The ceiling fan has a built in light as well and above the fan a 2-3 food wide clear plexiglass dome covered the center of the room. For sleeping through morning, you can block out all of the light coming into the yurt except for the dome. Our yurt also had a broom, dustpan and a long tool you can use to slightly open the dome, though we didnt try it.

This park is really amazing and unusual. I find when I go hiking, I normally have to go a long distance to reach the desired destination. I went to see the ruins- which btw were stunning for a random state park!- minus the fence around it. My boyfriend and I went rock hiking not sure if that term exists or if we created it but whatever. We had the oppurtunity to start from the top of the trail by strategical stepping from huge stone to small stone all the way down the trail. The current was pretty strong so we used a huge stick to navigate all the way to the ruins. Being in the water on a stone away from everyone looking at the old crumbling brick display was lovely. The park is incredibly dog friendly. I didnt have my dogs but everyone else seemed to. The staff was very nice. All sizes, ethnicities, ages of people enjoying the trail and water. Attire ranged from bathing suits to full on hiking gear. Very family friendly. Really a nice hidden spot.

Youd never expect this patch of beautiful wilderness to be sitting right under your nose in metro Atlanta. Scenic hiking trails follow the creek and its tributaries throughout the park, and history buffs will enjoy checking out the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing mill, which was burned down in the Civil War. Sweetwater Creek has lots of really good fishing spots, especially if youre willing to hike a little for that perfect spot. Be sure to bring sturdy boots and prepare for some turbulent areas if youre planning on hiking the red and white trails, which meander very close to the rocky creek bed for some breathtaking views. The yellow trail and foot bridge is also a nice hike through the woods, but be prepared for some seriously steep climbs in a couple of spots. All in all, its well worth a day in this park to get away from the madness of Atlanta without going too far.

Sweetwater Creek State Park is one of my favorites! It is not far from the city of Atlanta. I go there primarily to hike in the winter, and kayak in the summer. It is actually where I learned to kayak. I love the diversity of the different hiking trails. I have actually hiked them all, the red, blue, yellow and white. Winter vs. summer hiking is such a different experience, with each being very pleasurable. We even hiked in the snow last year. I am glad the Yellow trail is open now, however the red and blue trails are my favorites. Additionally, for the past several years, I have taken a group hiking during the month of February to commemorate Black History, and Ranger Don gives us rich history about the park, and a tour of the ruins. We support Sweetwater Creek State Park and encourage you to do so as well. The entire staff is great!

This is my favorite picnic and hiking spot! I hike and camp a lot in Georgia (about twice a month camping, weekly hiking) and this place is tops! The staff and Rangers are always friendly, helpful, professional, and seem to thrive on the special activities the park seems to always have. The trails are amazing and seem to go on forever. They are well marked and honestly some of the best trails in the world (and Ive been to dozens of those as well). The nature center always gets my daughters attention and there is an amazing amount to see in nature, history, and even modern (Geocache, Ingress, and Pokemon). When I tell my daughter there is a special walk/tour, I know that she and at least 4 more of her friends will have a great time (along with me and her mother). Even the weddings here are great! This is a MUST see for Parks in the Atlanta area!

State parks can be gems, but this one is the crown jewels! It is so grand, spacious, peaceful, and historic! Various hiking trails, fishing, and picnicking by a lake guarantee you and yours a day of sheer delights. There is the phenomenal Visitors Center and Museum where you can experience both the future and the past at the same time! It is a LEEDS green building --where deer may graze on the roof-- and houses the most clever exhibits on life and industry in the 19th century. The gift shop carries fantastic souvenirs along with ice cream favorites. Standing down by the shoals where the New Manchester Factory once ran, you get goosebumps envisioning the advance of Shermans army. These stunning ruins were featured in the recent DeNiro/Stallone motion picture, "Killing Season." ..... Total price for everything: just $5 per car!

Oh my word this park is gorgeous! I went in the fall and its absolutely beautiful even after most of the leaves have fallen. Great for walking and contemplating life or for an outdoor date spot. The Mill is just awesome but you cant go into it. You can look inside and get very close, but dont expect to climb any fences. The creek is so relaxing to listen to and if you are entertained by jumping from rock to rock like I am then you can almost cross the entire thing if the water is low enough. The paths are well marked and maintained and there seem to be plenty of tours if youre interested in that sort of thing. I prefer to get lost and see where I end up, which is why I was there in the first place. Overall, a wonderful park and worth the time if you enjoy a good hike.
