I have lived on Piedmont Ave for about a year now, and this theater definitely shares the feel of the neighborhood. Tim is quite correct that it has small screens and does not boast state-of-the-art technology. What it does offer is midnight showings of movies from the 80s (complete with trivia games and prizes), brew-it-yourself tea at the concessions, partnerships with local businesses, and a consistently good choice in films (I have yet to be disappointed with the substance of a movie there). Certainly, this is not what everyone looks for a theater experience, but I consider it an enjoyable alternative to multiplexes, which admittedly ofter more options if youre planning on sneaking into your second film.

I feel compelled to review this joint, particularly because of "Tims" bad review. I think its important to know about the theatres small size and general lack of state-of-the-artness, because if thats a big deal to you, then perhaps this place isnt your style. But if a cozy, friendly, small town feel is your style, then youll love Piedmont Theatre. And they always have some of the best movies out- ones that some places are afraid to run (Juno or Brokeback Mountain, for example). I believe that that says a lot.

Not very expensive and nice, classic theater decor, but lacking stadium seating is increasingly a negative in the modernizing world of film theaters. If you order tickets online from their site you will pay an extra dollar per ticket for the luxury of avoiding the ticket booth line, but thankfully, the extra buck does not go to an obnoxious, fee-gouging third-party like Fandango, instead seeming to all go to this theater itself and the cost of the website that it maintains itself to offer online sales.

Its a sweet little theater and they show some interesting films. Its fairly spendy but I like it. Some of the theaters have upgraded seats but others frankly suck. Nevertheless I would recommend it. So many theaters now just show the big blockbuster films and completely neglect the lesser known but far more intriguing films that are out there.

This place really serves as the anchor of one of Oaklands best neighborhoods. I love the theater. Disappointed they arent showing "The Room" anymore, but Im a big fan all the same. Ill come here alone and see movies Ive never heard about just because I enjoy it so much. Plus its awesome they give student discounts.

This is a theater for people who love film. It is not large, but it does have modern amenities and plenty of concession options. The file they show are those just out of the mainstream. Though parking is hard to find, especially on weekends, for the right movie, it is worth it.

Definitely a unique movie-going experience. The place is organized, but is very small (three screens of various capacity). Dont come too late during evening showings, or you will have trouble finding a good seat (or pair of seats next to each other, for that matter).

Comfy cozy little Indy theatre in a nice part of Oakland. Good place to watch the latest popular dark comedy, art flick, or high budget B movie. Hit up Fentons afterwards for the classic date night combo.

Its great to have a local theater but this one is small and the sound system could be improved. They always have great films though! They get the little budget film and more commercial films too.

Crowded theaters with bad leg room, but a fantastic little funky theatre over all. Best popcorn in the Eastbay, and raffles 15 minutes before the show make up for the weird seating layout.

My favorite in Oakland - great movies, tasty popcorn, easy-going vibe, friendly staff. Sure small screens, nothing fancy but they are generally the indie movies so the theatre fits.

Art films, yea! The seating in downstairs theater cant be beat. Reclining with enough room for people to get by without you budging. Fair prices and good restaurants nearby.

Downstairs theater is nice the other 2 are rally small. I cant believe they charge full price for one of the sceeens that only seat a couple dozen people.

The forfeiture of a signal star must be because the theatre seating on the lower level continues directly to the screen, in till one is a mere

Cozy small theaters, they always have a great selection of movies, unlike big chains showing big blockbusters. Great place for a date!

Small and funky. The main theater is open and spacious, but some of the smaller theaters somehow manage to have no good seats.
