In my 14 years in the Bay Area, perhaps shockingly, Ive been to The Independent exactly once. last Friday for the Death Cab show. The venue is fairly basic, but fans wont be disappointed - its smallish (maybe a capacity of 300?) so everyone (tall enough to see through the crowd) gets a decent view. There wasnt any seating so expect to be on your feet for a few hours, but the bar is speedy and the bartenders are friendly too (a couple drinks helps with the sore feet :). If you see a big name act here, its a pretty special experience. In fact, when we were leaving there were people camped outside waiting for the Killers show, which wasnt until the next evening (some 22 hrs later) totally insane!

Great talking to the owner Tim Mars. He has a farsighted vision for the "Beer" Bar/ Medallion 2.0 at 3rd and Main streets in the Old Bank District would add up to 400 units in four separate 13-story towers designed by Downtown LA-based Kevin Tsai Architecture, as well as an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and a boutique hotel. Very courteous employees, great sound, pretty decent food options and marvelous beer options. The cocktail servers were awesome. We needed handicapped accessible seating and were accommodated like royalty. Loved the entire experience. Its all I can do to not go back tonight to see Holly Williams and Jason Isbell again tonight.

Dive deep into this abysmal performance space and never leave. Live Comedy, RocknRoll, Hip Hop, and Whatever happens here for the hip creeps of downtown LA.
