The Highland has become the absolute first place my husband and I check to see if a movie we want to see will be playing there soon. An old remodeled (well, a bit. To be fair, the first time you go it might look a bit worn down by the years, but that just adds to the charm and is quickly forgotten once all its other excellent qualities begin to shine) playhouse, it only ever shows a single movie at a time. While the theatre has the normal movie style row seating options, its the open tables with high stool and plenty of padded chairs in the back that I love. Due to a few health issues and a life of being a klutz (more bones have been broken then not), it had become almost impossibly painful to go to normal theatres anymore. I just cant sit still for 2+ hours at a stretch in a cold room without needing to be practically carried out at the end of the movie (and Im in my early 30s, its just going downhill from here) so the ability to sit in comfort, to even have the option of putting my feet up if needed is a huge bonus. Since the Highland only ever shows one movie in its one massive room at a time, I can get up at any point and walk up and down in the back without bothering anyone OR missing any of the film. And for nights when Im well and truly miserably stiff, the ability to order a drink from the bar in the back is rather helpful too! Their sound system is excellent (They keep the sound in the back at a high enough level you can still hear dialog in the ladies room - so even that momentary duck out means you dont have to struggle to catch back up with what you missed), the bathrooms are clean, the tickets are cheap, the popcorn is hot, and the staff are truly excellent.

The Highland is unbeatable. No, it doesnt have stadium seating or 3D. Sure, it only has one screen. But the Highland is unlike most of your suburban theaters. First, first run movies are $5 all day, every day. Second, not only does it have regular theater seating, up near the concessions they have both booth and table seating. Third, they have a bar so if you want a beer with your Disney movie, you can do that two. Fourth, the Highland is the anchor to the Highland Square neighborhood - no suburban Regal theater is going to offer a better old school theater with better after-show walkable neighborhood stores and activities. Right nearby are everything from vintage clothing, and a record store, over to a Chipotle across the street. With rare exception the Highland is my go-to theater for myself and my family.

Im pretty sure this place has bedbugs. Immediately leaving I had itchy red bumps in a line. It would be no surprise with the absolutely nasty chairs, they were sticky to the touch. The cup holder on my left had old tissues in it and the cup holder to my right had old nachos. As I got to the front of the line the employee asked me "what do you want?" in a harsh tone instead of "what can I get you?" He slammed my popcorn down, some of it flew on the counter, before I could grab it and move he said, "I can help whos next." I just wanted to have a good time but this was horrible. Be careful of this place, I wouldnt recommend coming here.

I love Highland Theatre because of the price first and foremost. $5 for any ticket, any day, any time. The building is certainly cool with its history, but its true that it could use some renovation. My only concern is that cheap movies do sometimes being in some oddballs, and the last time we went there, some guy on drugs kept screaming and wandering until he was escorted out. However, this was an isolated incident and I have been several times where I simply enjoyed my $5 movie with everyone else. Id highly recommend the theatre, and there are several other cool places in Highland Square to go afterwards.

The old security guard was a bit overzealous. He stepped on my foot when rushing over to bark at the lady in front of me to put her phone away, this was during the previews! He didnt even apologize and I know he felt my foot throbbing under him and heard me moan in agony. I could barely focus on the movie with him running all around like a mad man trying see whos doing what, Lord only knows how many toes he crushed that night....And of course he made sure to give everyone surly looks on their way out. I will be going to the other cheapy movie from now on, Paul Blart ruined it for me.

Negatives first: sound quality is only so-so, the screen and picture are not as great as a newer more modern theater, and the seats are only OK, no cup holders. Positives: great location in Highland Square, bar in the theater, concession prices are great compared to everywhere else, beautiful historic building, $5 ticket prices!!! Good movies. I would expect a historic theater with $5 tickets to play no name movies, but the Highland usually has the top movies every week. I am very thankful to have this place so close to home!

My favorite theatre in all of Akron. This place is super unique and has an incredible history. The tickets are super cheap, and they have great shows. You can order your food and drinks right in the theatre, so you dont miss a moment of the film. They serve alcohol, which is definitely not the norm at your big-box theatres. This place is a jewel of Highland Square, and I hope to see it stick around for years to come.

While the sound and picture quality maybe in question, Highland Theatre more than makes up for it with their bar/concession stand, restaurant tables (as a seating option) insanely cheap tickets and that vintage "theatre" aesthetic that I just love! No its not the 3DX Intense Crazy Cinema Experience X that some other theatres offer but its pretty damn good!

We used to love coming here, what happened? I just took my family to see guardians of the galaxy. The place was disgusting not at all like I remember we all left with little red itchy bumps all over. There was trash in the cup holders. Its sad what happened to this place, please get it cleaned up and sprayed for bugs so it doesnt get shut down.

This theater is pure classic. Walking into the Highland is like walking back in time. The architecture, decor, and cost of tickets and refreshments are from times gone by. Also, Im pretty sure you can buy booze to add to the experience. When Highland shows a movie I want to see, I make sure I get there.

A historical treasure for Highland Square, and affordable cinema for all, the Highland Square Theatre is an important part of the Akron experience, but with a ticket cost of just $5. Ill never tire of this place, and hope it is still in decent profit for generations to come.

Really cool theater and perfect for the Highland Square area. Beer and drinks can be purchased in the back, which is really awesome for new movies. Seats could be more comfortable, they are certainly older chairs from an old setup, but the atmosphere cannot be beat.
