At first I was impressed -- the large cafe with local treats and cozy seating resembled what Starbucks aspires to be. It seemed to be a place to spend an evening, not just a couple hours sitting in front of a movie screen. Light, trendy music is played, over which occasional announcements are made (airport-style) that so-and-so film is now seating. Progressing onto the theater, unfortunately, left much to be desired. Stadium seating doesnt exist in these tiny theaters -- one is more likely to view the back of a balding head than whatever independent film is showing on the other side of it. The room rumbled inappropriately throughout the film, no doubt due to the R train speeding by beneath our feet. A unique experience, definitely, and this was one of only two theaters in the city showing the film we were eagerly waiting to see (Son of Rambow -- recommended). There is potential here, but its clear the Angelika has seen better days. I might come back, but only for the brownies.

The movie didnt begin until a full 10 minutes past the scheduled start time. And when it did begin, we couldnt believe our ears: it was as if the actors had phoned in their parts on a bad connection cellphone, being replayed over ripped speakers. The hiss of static every time anyone spoke was giving me a headache. I slipped out to inform the attendants to fix the soundtrack, and they replied "Oh yes, other people have complained too. That movie has bad sound on the print. It gets better after a half hour." Okay, whatever. So we endured another 45 minutes, but it didnt improve. Finally couldnt take it and went home. At least their was no hassle getting the tickets refunded. They very well may have received a bad print from the studio. But consider: if a restaurant gets a shipment of rotten fish, they take fish off the menu--they dont serve it to customers and blame their supplier. A theater should be no different.

Best place to watch some quality, limited release films. Worst place to actually sit and watch a movie in. Awkward, uncomfortable seating. The two seats I tried sitting in were already sunken in and lost most of its plush factor. There was a huge gap when I pulled the seat down. I also found the theater room to be too bright inside. The theater walls were not painted dark enough and therefore, the reflection from the screen caused the entire room to light up. Most recently, I was watching It Follows (awesome movie, btw). A bright theater is the last kind of ambiance I want for a horror flick. Evidence of NYCs limited space: the theaters are long and rectangular. The usual coveted middle doesnt exist because the middle would be the aisle. Forget about a good vantage point if its a packed theater unless everyone happens to be hobbit-sized and petite. Do not expect a wide-screen experience.

The people who work here are incompetent and rude. God forbid you should want to buy a gift card. They sent me up and down stairs twice (my foot was in a cast so that was especially pleasant.) No-one had the cards. Correction - no-one knew they had the cards. They told me I could only buy a gift card in increments of $25, (ticket price is $13.50) turned out that wasnt right either. The nasty little ticket-seller at the front booth clearly feels he is too good to be working there while he waits for the call from Spielberg. Go to Landmark Sunshine instead - the theaters are clean, the popcorn is fresh and the staff are friendly, helpful and competent.

1 check-in My friend had some advance tickets to see the movie, "obvious child" at this theater. The theater reminded me of an old school theater. The actual room where we sat to watch the movie was small and tight. I wasnt uncomfortable because I was so engrossed in the movie. However, had the movie been bad I wouldve been more aware of those uncomfortable seats. I also wont complain too much since we didnt pay to see the movie which was another plus. I like the big open area of seats and chairs by the concession stands to lounge in before your flick starts. I would definitely return and even pay to see a movie not in the mainstream theaters.

Great place to catch independent movies not playing in mainstream theatres. Tickets can be bought online and redeemed at the theater using QR code in your email or purchased in person. Its got a cafe in the lobby for coffee and baked goods, and your usual sugary drinks and popcorn concession stands downstairs in front of the theatres. The theater I was in was narrow but long with an aisle down the middle and seats on either side. The seats were all level to the ground meaning if someone taller than you sits in front of you youre probably going to have to change seats. All in all, a great venue for a different kind of movie night experience.

This is a review for the cafe. Youll be lucky if theres a bartender to serve you their overpriced products. You can charge your phone, possibly tablet (if you find one of the 3 plugs), but not your laptop. They will be rude about it like if youre a terrorist, even if it doesnt say anywhere. The movie theater is a great experience, they always have a great selection and quality is good/great in both video and sound. Clearly the coffee shop is an afterthought that I wish maybe didnt exist. I would love to go there and do some work, then at the end enjoy a movie... but I guess it will be only the movie from now on.

Known to New Yorkers as the Angelika, this theater features first run independent and international foreign language films. The Angelika has six screens none of which is very large, but the audio and projection are excellent in the confines of the space provided. There is a reasonably priced and surprisingly good café located on the main floor that sells fine food and beverages curated from local artisans. The vibe at this theater is so relaxed; it is always a pleasure to visit. Customers are encouraged to come and dine before or after the movie.

Good place for arthouse/foreign movies you may never find in local multiplex. It mimics old theaters with posters from bygone era. Usher inside are pleasant. Screen number 1 is narrow with long rows of seats tragically split in middle to accommodate pass through. Walking aisle shouldve been on either side as it takes away prime viewing seats. Screen is clean with no issue with sound either. Disclaimer: Previews and advertisements are also very different than what you normally see in multiplex. Ignore this at your own peril.

This theater is AWESOME! And not for reasons you might think. The screens and seats are standard. Nothing much to talk about there. The things that make Angelika great are the film selection and the food selection. Its almost a guarantee that every movie showing there is a top rated indie or mainstream film. Always Oscar-worthy films showing. In a great location just off the BDFM trains at Broadway-Lafayette. And the food selection is wonderful! German Chocolate cake...Quiche... rootbeer floats, etc. Love it!

Angelika is a movie theater which seems to be more about the history of the theater and the film on the screen than the atmosphere in the room. Youll often hear a rumbling subway train as it passes by or you might notice the slightly dingy motif, but thats all a part of the classic movie venue feel. The movie selections are ever changing and rarely anything that youll see at any of the other major theaters. That of course is the reason that I still regularly check movie listings and excited to once again return.
