This rating is due mostly to the staff, as the course was actually in really good shape. It was a shame that we couldnt enjoy it more than we did. We had a group of about 10 golfers that called two weeks in advance (which is the maximum they allow) and booked three tee times. A lot of times when you see that, the three groups will eventually group up and start playing together and really slow down the course- however, we did NOT. We all have played golf our whole lives and know how disrespectful it can be to other groups behind us to do so. Anyhow, we were supposed to start teeing off at 10:50, but the course had a tournament that morning that was running a little late and would put us back about "10-15 minutes". We were fine with that as it was a great day and 10-15 minutes extra warming up wasnt s big deal. HOWEVER, the pros failed to disclose to us that what really was going on was that they had booked a 70 person tournament that morning but let 93 play! We couldnt tee off until the tourney was done and do you know how much longer it takes an extra 23 people to play through? Ill tell you- one hour and 45 minutes! We had already paid at this point, so all they would offer was a total refund. And not even an apology- going so far to say "it was out of their hands". They did give us two small buckets of balls though. For 10 people. For 1 hour and 45 minutes. What a way to make things right. They could have called us earlier in the day when they knew that they would be delayed, or told us the truth BEFORE we PAID! And then to say it wasnt their fault- just who let those extra 23 people on the course then? Sounds like they were trespassing and should have had the cops called on them like a group below. Besides all that debacle, by the time we finally did get on the course, it turns out, not all of the tournament had gotten off. In fact we were on pace for a 6 hour round through hole 4 before the tourney finally left. And then at the turn, the Marshall asked us to pick up our play because it was wide open ahead of us! Well no duh! It just had the feeling that they were seeing $$ and not caring at all about the huge inconvenience they gave us. We had to shift the rest of our plans for the day back by two hours. Now, I used to work at a golf course and I know what a huge hassle a large group of golfers can be, but for that reason we had called and set up three tee times and were very respectful of the course and the rest of the players out there that were in the same boat as us. We were trying to help them out as much as possible, and they couldnt even show us the same respect? I know had I been on the other side I would have definitely issued an apology and explained the situation up front and then at least waived cart fees or something. But we still wound up paying over to $80! Save your money and drive up north a little ways and play at any of the great courses just south of Houston. Positives: nice course Cons: terrible customer service

I played this course over the weekend with some friends of mine and have to say I plan on never returning. I don’t think it would be a stretch to say I was bit by more Mosquito’s while playing this course than all of the bites I’ve received in my 34 years of life. I kid you not; at one point I went to swat my leg and was surprised to see a small village of Mosquito’s had taken up residency on me. It was at this time decided I need to find the nearest can of OFF. I drove up to the pro-shop where I was glad to see they had some OFF sitting on the register counter (they saw me coming from a mile away)… little did I know that one can was going to cost me $10.83. Now I understand the need to make a profit, but come on almost $11 dollars for a can of OFF? I know, I know… I should have brought some with me, but I didn’t. So I write this to let you know, if you plan on playing this course bring at least two cans of OFF with you or your own personal fogger. The other bad part about this golf course were the two gentlemen (if you choose to call them gentlemen) who harassed my friends and I after we spent $897 dollars in green/car rental fees (20 players) + the several hundreds that we spent on $15 dollar six packs of beer from the cart girls (only thing that was nice about this place). Now, I know what you’re thinking… a bunch of drunks causing havoc on the course. Well this couldn’t be anything further from the truth. We’re a very respectful group of guys who all work hard and enjoy spending our hard earned dollars to play golf on the weekends. The starter and the “resident pro” on staff treated our group like we were street trash defacing their precious golf course. While waiting on the 18th hole from the remainder of our party to come in we were asked to turn in out golf carts and leave the course… right after some of had just purchased more beers from the cart girl. We stated that we were trying to wait for our friends who were playing directly behind us, and were told if we didn’t turn the carts in the cops would be called on us for trespassing… Didn’t we just pay you $897 dollars to play? If this is any indication of how Moody Gardens Golf course treats all of the large parties playing their course, I suggest you take your hard earned money else where. I know in the future my friends and I will be sure to!

Being from Galveston, I grew up playing what used to be "Muni," and it was always tough given the coastal wind and water on all but one hole. In the three-four years since the renovation, the Moody course has become one of my favorites in the entire Houston area. First off, the greens are fantastic. They are consistently smooth and quick throughout the entire course, which is rare for rain-deprived Texas. They are quick but not unfairly fast, and are very soft for how quick they are. I love hitting into and putting on these greens. Ive played there ten times since 09, the latest over the 11 holidays, and feel like the course is really hitting its stride. The layout continues to impress, even though the first six holes I knew as a child are completely gone. This course is certainly not for the faint of heart, as there is water on both sides of many holes and on at least one side for about 16 holes. However, if youre feeling good about your game and want a good test and a good time, this track is definitely for you. As for service, I cant speak to the unfortunate instances that happened to some of the earlier reviewers. One quirk that is somewhat annoying is they insist on asking for the carts to be turned in at a certain time, usually at least a half hour before sunset. For those trying to squeeze in a twilight round with a big group, this could be an issue but its also something to plan around. This course blows any of the other gulf-coast municipal and even some private courses out of the water. I have to go clear to the other side of Houston to find another daily-rate course that I look forward to playing as much as Moody.
