This and the Bijou blow the Carmike out of the water. Youd think with such an amazing alternative like this, the new Carmike theater would have been designed with the viewer in mind, but compared to the State it is a nightmare. Parking here can be a bit tricky, but even with paying to park in the lot, the State is MUCH cheaper, and the amenities and organization is leagues ahead.

Beautifully restored 100 year old movie palace. Run by volunteers it shows just great movies. A lot of movies that get no play anywhere else. The theatre is very family and community oriented and holds lots of free and .$.25 movies. Monday nights offer special programming for community groups. And concession prices are great and include locally sourced products.

Took the family to this nice theater to watch Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Admission was only $0.25! Concessions were reasonably cheaper than at typical theaters. The staff is very friendly and I later found out the theater is operated by volunteers. This vintage-feel, small town theater is a great place to enjoy a family favorite!

So happy to have such a wonderful renovated theater right downtown. The State theater offers many different types of viewings including first run films, Wednesday matinees, kids films, free movies especially during school holidays, our very our film festival, telecasts of important sporting and political evens, and more more more.

HUGE screen! Ive gone in several times knowing nothing about whats playing, and have come out with a new favorite movie every time! I suppose that, unlike the chain cinemas, the State Theatre has to rely on great movies to stay afloat. As a result, the State has been running strong for 7 years.

This theater was restored to become a real center for entertainment here in TC. There is a film festival every summer, bringing the most recent films to us ahead of the rest of the country. We support the theater by serving as volunteers about once a month. Great for our community.

A movie at this gorgeous theater, staffed by volunteers, is a wonderful and affordable experience! The popcorn and drinks are priced so reasonably, you can still afford dinner after the movie at one of TCs great restaurants. Its a dont miss experience.

I love this place! I would much rather see a movie here than in one of the chain theaters. They have all the bells and whistles and the seats are amazing. The consessions are very affordable and the staff is always very helpful and friendly.

Great place to take a date or see a unique independent film! There is very atmospheric lighting in the theater up the walls, leading to stars shimmering in the ceiling. At the front there is a big velvet curtain in front of the screen!

A fun place to go and fair ticket prices, the concessions are normal priced and they always have special events for movies like... Back to the future day and waynes world anniversary.... would recommend, Its another reason TC is TC.

Very charming theater in downtown Traverse City. Apparently its staffed by volunteers all of whom were super friendly and attentive. The theater itself had very comfortable seats and had the classic movie theater feel.

Great volunteer-run theater that offers an outstanding variety of classic movies, as well as the usual newer movies other theaters play. Provides an unique nostalgic atmosphere that complements the "feel" of the town.

So glad there are people in this country that want to keep places like this around. Id much rather watch a movie here or at the Bijou than any mega theater. Its a fun, clean, unique place to watch a movie.

An awesome TC experience. Tickets are affordable at around $8.50 and the theater is historic but maintains modern appeal. A combo was only $5 and a the workers are volunteers. Great movies!

Amazingly rebuilt! Very cool atmosphere, with thousands of small lights in the ceiling to mimick stars. Hardly ever any commercials before the main feature. Great prices.
