The Del Mar is a classic movie house restored from a bygone era and has a really cool nostalgic vibe. For being such an old theater, they have done a good job upgrading the speaker and projection systems because the sound and picture quality or definitely up to par. Also, dont expect to see big budget movies from the major studios here. This theater mainly caters more towards independent and arthouse films. The first time I came here I was walking behind a tourist family on the street that looked up at the marquee and said quote "Ive never even heard of any of these movies." And I just laughed to myself as I walked in. The only fault I have with this theater is that the chairs are really stiff and I found myself constantly readjusting in my seat to try and get comfortable. I havent seen a movie in their larger palace theater, but based on the pictures it looks like the seats in that theater are more comfortable. Other than that, I love this old school gem.
This is how a theater was intended to be. Amidst the downtown action, vintage marque, popcorn with real butter instead of that toxic partially hydrogenated soybean oil at most theaters, better selection of snacks, friendly staff, good sound system, classic decor. Concessions are much more reasonably priced than the competition. Still angry at Landmark for abandoning the Aptos Cinema, however.
Jumped out of a time machine and landed here. really fun, even if the bathrooms are made for short people. put on good events and play indie movies. not gonna find many mainstream films showing here but very thankful there are still places like this that exists...rocky horror picture show play and a movie screening is a must for students.

Watch something different and relive the days of classic cinema by supporting this theatre. The flashing marquee will catch your eye, the art deco interior will make you stop in awe and the film experience will take you elsewhere. Just dont forget the popcorn and please, turn your phones to silent.
Great old theater. Sits are a bit close together and dont offer much comfort or leg room, but stunning building overall. The butter on the popcorn is delicious and a bit different from what youd be used to at a normal theater. This is the place to go for indie/off the main stream movies.
Quality, foreign and art films in a old school movie palace built in 1935. High quality customer service and tasty local snacks like vegan brownies, organic popcorn with real butter, and lots of drink options like fresh local chai, Odwalla, etc. Highly recommended.
Great little theater. Saw Trainspotting 2 here, was the only theater in 60 miles showing it. If youre looking for smaller theaters with a more eclectic selection and a really cool, classic art-deco style, check this place out. Loved it, will be going back!
The seats are very roomy, and the atmosphere of this theater is very nice. Its an old-school theater built when going to the movies was a luxury. They also sponsor many awesome events like the Midnight Movies and the Secret Film Festival!
This theater is by far the best in keeping it old school. I feel that it is comfortable enough to enjoy a great sub titled flick, but thats just my opinion. The bagel dogs are great and the coffee is a plus! I give it 5 stars.
Great theater! They usually have the indie movie your friend wont stop talking about. The main theater is huge and beautiful! Last time I was there they were not doing the "pick your seat when you buy your tickets" thing
This is a cinema in the proper sense of the word. You know it from the moment you see the cinema from the street. Big and imposing. The inside is classic art deco cinema. Seating comfortable and the staff friendly.
Great seats! Show up early, there is nothing assigned seating. The popcorn is organic and the coffee is good. Good theatre for a date, movies are pretty good, usually a nice mix of mainstream and artsy.
Love this restored theatre.....especially the retro bathrooms and upstairs seating area. The grand auditorium is where to watch all your films! Super comfy seats and delicious popcorn.
There is a barely any room to breathe.your legs are cramped there is no leg room.the popcorn is stale. The theatre looks.like it was made for children.improvement on seats needed asap
I love this theater! I have been going here my whole life and it seems timeless. I always enjoy their pop corn (they have yeast!!) brownies and tea. Very clean. Beautiful theater!
Inexpensive, but comfy and very stylish place, with option to refill your soda and popcorn for free, and a lot of street parking next to the theatre - i couldnt be any happier.

Their "Midnight Movies" are a bizarrely fantastic event where eccentric young people come out to enjoy all sorts of cult classics. Ive never had so much fun in a movie theater!
Old-fashioned theater that has been updated with modern amenities. Usually has a selection of independent films. Nice way to reminisce about the good old days of cinema!

Salas agradables, cine de arte y comercial. Muy buen servicio
The people working here were very courteous and professional. The seating was comfortable, and the entire experience was fun. I love this theater!
Pleasantly surprised by the low price and nice seating. Theres a raffle before the movie where they give out stuff, which is pretty cool.
i love all the classic movies they play. i remember the first time i ever came here and saw a movie was when the babe first hit theaters!
They have a table at which you can customize your popcorn flavors with spices and such. Ive never seen this anywhere else.
A fun theater to visit. Good seats and a good screen and sound, plus the architecture is fun to look at and enjoy.
I like the nostalgic atmosphere in this theatre but the smaller auditoriums could use a seat (omfort) upgrade.
Really cool old layout theater that has fun midnight movies on the weekends like rocky horror picture show.
Brings in very good movies. Their food is actually good - real butter for pop corn, good coffee, etc.
Although this is a bit of an older theater, they show good movies and the prices are pretty standard.
Classic theater with three floors, saw the Oscar winner moonlight here and loved the atmosphere.
Old-fashioned vibes, beautiful and charming in every way. Makes for a great movie experience.
So glad to have another place in Santa Cruz where one can watch the NOT-mainstream movies.

Its pretty old school and they have midnight movies like, Fight Club, The labrynth, etc.
A bit of a throwback vibe to this theater. Decent place to see the latest indie flicks.
Old 20s Art Decco style movie theater. Friendly staff. Modern comfortable seating.
Beautiful, historic Theatre. Original was much prettier before the divided it up.
Beautifully restored with a focus on showing thought provoking movies and events
Good movies . And British national theatre productions from time to time.
Old school decor, reasonably priced popcorn/snacks, large main screen
Been coming here for years! 2 theaters with a mezzanine
The seats are very comfortable. Very good atmosphere
