Saying that The Smell has a great atmosphere has become something of a cliche, but its very true. Its a very positive place filled with people who are very enthusiastic about music. The all-ages, no booze rules ensure that the focus always remains on the music. The all-ages thing is no joke either, older teens often bring along their kid siblings and Ive even seen parents holding their infant children. One of the most memorable experiences Ive had at The Smell was when I saw a father carrying his six-year-old daughter through the mosh pit, both laughing and smiling as they careened through the colliding bodies. Its not a great place for children to be left on their own however for, while its perfectly safe while inside, the venue is located in a pretty bad part of town. But if you can brave it and enjoy the rush and thrill of small, sweaty shows, then you will love The Smell.

Hot, loud, and sometimes smelly, this is the best place to watch underground bands from the area and beyond. The bathroom is drizzled in graffiti, the couches have no cushion, but theres no better to place to soak up Los Angeles underground then here. Being served breakfast from the girls of Mika Miko, getting sweaty in the pits of Retox, or even scoring that one obscure vinyl from a dude with a box outside, this place is for making memories.

It always makes me happy to see a quality DIY space. The people were super nice and Id gladly come back to town for a show at The Smell! Dont mind the neighbors with the Escalades. Honestly, thats the weirdest thing about that block is the fancy dressed kids waiting to get into the trendy bar. Go see some good music at The Smell. Rock out and dance!

ReFry Records

Lots of cool DIY venues come and go, but the smell has found a way to live to be 100 in DIY years. Its the best place to see and play shows in LA. Heck, they even pay bands!

Phoenix Blaze

Some of my best memories are here at the Smell. Dancing to sweet jams like Sloppy Jane and other artists who have great stage presence and wonderful tunes.

The stage and crowd area is cool but this place really earns its name. Do not recommend using the restrooms unless absolutely necessary.

Great venue. Some of the better shows sell out, and tickets are only available at the door.. but besides that this place is incredible.

As grimy as the name implies...but that makes it all the more awesome. Cant think of a more back alley, gritty venue than this.

Its a cool indie place for upcoming young acts. It is aimed at an audience of primarily younger, non-drinking crowds.

The past events that I have been to was okay like the Halloween short films show. I rate this place about 7 of 10.
