Caledon State Park is a pristine old growth forest that has several hiking trails that range from level to gently rolling. The trails are easy walking and are typically firebreak vehicle trails that have been graveled. There is a camping area along the Potomac River that is accessible by canoe or kayak, but there are no kayak or canoe launching faciliites at Caledon for privately owned boats. This relatively new feature has desiginated tenting areas with BBQ grills and basic restroom facilitites without running water. Ample firewood is readily available. Permission to use camping facilities must be obtained in advance. Deer are often seen while walking along the trails and eagles, blue herrons and other birds are present particularly around the marshy areas. We like it because it is reasonably close to home and our grandchildren can easily walk the trails. The cost per day during the weekend is $4 paid on the honor system at the entrance. Modern public restrooms are in the house at the trail head. If you wish to kayak or canoe to Caledon, suggest consider putting in at Tims II in Fairview Beach.

The place is gorgeous, and that alone buys 3 stars. It also has extremely well-maintained and well-marked trails, which bumps it up to 4 star territory, but in addition to that there was also a wonderful volunteer staffer at the visitors center who gave me historical information, hiking highlights and just offered to chat for a few minutes about everything around. Ive met plenty of friendly people at Virginias state parks but she was above and beyond and thats to whom I give the 5th star. If you go, be sure to allot some time to check in on the Smoot House (Visitors Center) and be willing to rest a little while by the Potomac because the view is lovely. nice clean, nature oriented park---HOWEVER, dont bring your kayak and/or canoe and expect to go paddling--despite the stories in the local newspapers and the VA Parks Wesbsite, there is NO PLACE TO LAUNCH a canoe or kayak at this facility--the only paddling there is on scheduled organized tours on boats owned by the facility--THEY will not let you launch your own boat---despite photos on their website of folks paddling and listing paddling (boating) as one of the activities. The story I got from the attendant was that funding is scarce these days and they dont yet have the funds to make a launch site--that said , he did refund my entrance fee.

I love Caledon! The trails take you deep into the woods to experience the grandeur of the trees that tower above. I felt so at peace surrounded by unadulterated nature. If you make it to the riverfront look out for bald eagles diving into the Potomac and surfacing with a fresh catch. This place has a high bald eagle population and is well worth checking out. I attended the wine festival this past weekend and enjoyed local artisans, music, BBQ, and several Virginia wines; including a King George winery. The whole family had a great time! They have a variety of events throughout the year. I am definately looking forward to the next visit!

Its a nice place to go to hike. We havent been down to the beach, but I hear good things. You cannot drive to the beach; it is almost a 2 mile hike to the water, and with a toddler, thats not the easiest feat. The playground leaves much to be desired. The events at this park looked very kayak friendly, but you cannot use your own kayak. Instead you have to rent their kayaks and get a ride down to the water. I appreciate they are trying to keep the place serene and as unpopulated and untouched by humans as possible, bit its not what were looking for in a park.

This place is really nice, and the trails are more than you would expect. The park is well kept and clean, while only charging 2$ on weekdays and 3$ on weekdays. The trails are nicely kept and can be challenging if the right path is chosen; and the scenery and wildlife only add to the experience. There is a beach trail that is mostly paved gravel road, the beach is small but gives great views and swimming. In all this is one of Virginias best small parks.

A beautiful forest with huge trees. Diverse, with an open understory. Usually, in the eastern US, the old growth that remains is due to being located on slopes, ridges, coves, or otherwise difficult-to-access places. As such, the soil is neither deep nor fertile, and therefore, the old trees are not actually very big. C.S.P. is the opposite; one wonders what set of circumstances allowed it to evade the blade.

We went hoping to launch our kayaks. 2 mile hike to the water, but only authorized vehicle allowed to drive down to water. Would definitely get more visitors if the park would make it easier for personal water craft, even for a fee.

The park says it opens at 8 am but its 8:15 am and youre still waiting for the gate to be unlocked. Otherwise its a beautiful place for an easy hike with nice views.
