First time playing Great Rock Sunday 7/30/17. Read a lot of negative reviews so was nervous going in as they werent the best... Im a 14 hdcp btw. 1) Ate here the night before and the food, drinks and service was great. Also, had awesome live music so that was all A++ 2) The starter was very organized (and all the staff were very friendly) and had everyone going off on time (sad that this is rare at a public course lol) 3) The greens/ fairways were in great shape - no stupid lies like you get at a lot of public courses 4) played in 4.5 hours - again, not bad for a sunday morning (8:10am tee time) on a public course ALL OF THE REASONS JUST MENTIONED GIVE IT 4 STARS... now ... the negative. 1) The greens were STUPID fast (I just played Torrey Pines South) and these greens were every bit as fast as Torrey. As someone who golfs 40+ rounds a season if youre not prepared its gonna murder you. Yes, it is consistent on all 18 holes. You can miss a 4 footer and have 15 feet coming back... grow the grass and water those bad boys down.. this is also the case w fairway shots... land it on the front because youre ball is running right through the green and not holding 2) The rough around the green was again US Open brutal.. 4-5+ inches. I was standing on top of a few of my balls and didnt even see them.. made chipping around the greens an adventure to say the least.. please cut them back a little 3) this last piece is picky but just my preference.. im not a fan of blind shots and lots of elevation change and this course had that for 18 holes.. nothing Great Rock can do it just wasnt a course that fit my eye. Ended up w an 89 as a 14 hdcp... if youre an average non-serious golfer this course is going to ruin your day.. if youre decent you can have fun with the occasionally F bomb that your ball is doing something stupid haha. ALL in ALL Yes - I would go back but buyer beware

I will start off by saying that the course itself is beautiful, shy of a few cart path issues that will send you flying if youre not paying attention. I played 7/13/17 at noon as a fire deal from Golf Now. On that day, the temperature was about 95 and with humidity, it was a feels like 110 day. Golfing might not have been the smartest choice but we did bring some bottles of water and Gatorade. My complaint is this; after the fourth hole, they have a food/beverage hut as many courses do. You loop back to the hut a few times throughout the round. By the time we completed the seventh hole, we were out of bottled drinks. We were heading back toward the hut for some much needed bottles of water but, alas, the hut was closed. The drink cart girl had passed shortly before and made no mention of it being her last rounds but we also didnt see her again. Most courses have a water cooler every few holes by the tee boxes, but not this one. We were unable to continue golfing due to the extreme fatigue that was immediate in those conditions. The $30 round would have been a great deal but now I feel like I was gyped out of my money and will likely not be returning to their establishment. be warned... do not golf on a hot day there without having a cooler full of your own waters. youll need it once they close up shop unannounced.

Played the course on Monday Oct. 12th. I am a 14 handicap. If you do not have Zach Johnsons game from 100 yds. and in, or Phil Michelsons game around the greens this course is not for you. In spite of the great conditions and the friendly starter I would not return to this course. The speed of the greens and pin placements are ridiculous for a public track. If you are going to keep the green complexes this difficult you should limit play to 10 handicappers and below. No fun for the average golfer. I had a vacation day and went to play golf to relax but left frustrated over the US Open like conditions of the greens. Even when I made a good chip or shot into the green there was no reward. Never 3 jacked so many greens in my 20+ years of playing golf. You are missing the point. It had nothing to do with my score. I did not have a chance to score based on the conditions.

My buddy and I were really looking forward to playing this course for a long time but unfortunately the experience turned out to be total crap! There were grounds crew mowing without courtesy on every fairway and even the greens for the first 6 holes. It was completely ridiculous!! You could not even tee off without a guy mowing right in front of you without extending the slightest courtesy. Had to walk off after 6 holes of very rude grounds staff destroying our round. Horrible experience and will probably never return considering the inadequate response we received from the pro-shop. " Sorry but no refund" They gave us a rain check for 9 holes that we will never use. It does not matter how nice a course is and it is OK but not worth the price of the aggravation of dealing with the staff!!

My friends and I played GR this past Saturday after not having played there for almost a year. It was a pleasant surprise to see the same friendly faces in the pro shop and it was nice to start our round dealing with staff who are just plain nice as well as professional. The course was in great shape taking into account that they just aerated the greens a week or 2 ago - thankfully they used the small tines aerator instead of the larger plug-type. We ran into some of the maintenance guys pulling the large leaf blowers on the fairways and they graciously shut the blowers down while we were hitting. Maybe they got the message from an earlier post? We played our round in 4 1/2 hrs-not bad for a Saturday morning. All-in-all a great day

Course is great but run very poorly. Played on Saturday 28 Sept 2014 had a 10:21 am tee time ,we were told they were 20 minutes behind. On # 9 we spoke to the ranger and was told there is avery slow group playing ahead of us. We of course asked why they are allowed to hold up the rest of the field, the answer was there was nothing he could. ON # 17 after almost a 6 hour round we left they course is really nice but very, very poorly run, its a shame they dont know how to run a golf course , my last time Lew Mohrmann

This is one my favorite courses and I hope it does well. The challenging greens and elevation changes make it a fun course. The short par 4 on 11 gave me fits the first time I played it. Pro Tip land it on the front to get the ball to a back pin. If the pin is in the front, use glue!

Quirky layout, staff are way over the top, and the maintenance is lacking. Rough is patchy. But for a public Long island course at this rate, all of this stuff is almost to be expected. Come play this course of they have a time you like, expect a long round and youll have a fun time.
