Its hit or miss with the knowledge and professionalism of the staff here. My first experience with the staff here was disappointing. Both employees were sitting behind the counter looking bored, and after browsing for a long time without being offered any assistance, I had to seek out help. I bought a betta (healthier looking than the ones at PetSmart), but the woman that assisted me didnt know anything about bettas. She hadnt heard of bettas being fed brine shrimp or blood worms, for instance, and they love both. She also gave me information that was not consistent with research Ive done, saying they dont need a heater (they are tropical fish) and they only live 1-2 years (Ive consistently heard 2 - 3 years or longer). The second time I spoke to an employe there, she was much more helpful and knowledgeable. When my betta wasnt eating, she seemed genuinely concerned and surprised he wasnt eating brine shrimp. She suggested trying blood worms or tubifex worms and encouraged me to speak to them again if he still wouldnt eat. Since we only have 2 options in Ithaca, I think this would still be my preference.

Ive frequented Pampered Pets over the last year and have purchased a pair of rats and a ball python from them. Each time, the staff was able to provide us with complete advice for the animals care and were able to answer the numerous questions that I had for them regarding the pets. Their starter kits are a decent deal and they are able to adjust it to accommodate our needs. In addition, Pampered Pets Square Meal diet (for the rats) is excellently priced compared to pre-packaged rodent food. I definitely plan to continue to go back for just about anything, and overall havent had any problems with them to date.

This store does an awful job caring for tarantulas and the staff obviously doesnt care. Sponges in water bowls that breed dangerous bacteria and molds, heat lamps that are not appropriate for spiders, no hides of any kind, and an arboreal species placed in a short cage with nothing to climb on. She was desperately hiding with her web in a back corner. Pitiful treatment of very tender creatures. I will never shop in this store again.

Every time Ive been in the store they take the time to find out what type of pet would be a good fit for us, make sure we have all necessary info on the proper care and feeding, and offer to be on-call if we have any questions. They may not be the cheapest place, but they truly love the animals and are very kind to people, as well!

I really appreciate the expertise of the staff about how to raise and train the pets. This is an independently owned store that has gone the extra mile to be accommodating and helpful. I would rather pay a little more at an independent store and support local business, than to have less customer service at a box store.

I frequently use their do-it-yourself dog wash. The staff is always helpful and friendly and will go out of their way to make sure I have everything I need. It is a great bargain since they supply water, shampoo, brushes, towels, etc. and saves me from making a mess at home.

Saltwater fish selection is limited, as are saltwater supplies. Lots of the dry goods stock looks old and is dusty and faded. Live fish prices are good, but the fish look a little sketchy. I spent a little money there and hope theyll improve.
