MY
My Sweet Shadow
Terrible. First off... Rude people. Dirty. Smelly. Cramped. Employees lack knowledge. At least for the reptiles anyways. The lady behind the register who has all the piercings is very rude and offensive. Talked down on me when I answered questions she asked me. Well actually I didnt get to answer the questions cause she cut me off every second with her attitude problem. Ok heres the reason Im doing this review... I bought a baby ball python who they were selling as a hatchling thats never had its first feed WHICH.. Shouldnt be done anyways. Another reptile store I go to doesnt sell their reptiles till after their second feeding. Back to house of lies.. Excuse me.. House of tropicals... A day after I got my ball python I found a tick on her belly under a scale. Hard to see when they are showing you the snake. My fault for not inspecting the snake closely before buying. But they held six ball pythons in my face because thats how many are housed in one tank... Thats another no no that they are doing. Also.. The bedding they sell is infested with mites as well. Its been 2 months since Ive gotten my hatchling ball python and she still hasnt ate yet and the people there said this is normal and said to try a live mouse. They reached into the bin with all the mice and handed me one that was 3 sizes too big. I told them how big she was. Even compared her to the other ball pythons they were selling and they still insisted this was the right size mouse for her.. Anyways.. Took the mouse home tried to see if shed eat and still nothing.. Later that day the mouse I found dead in the enclosure I have for keeping mice. So that mouse must of been sick or starved. Havent been back to that store since and currently only go to this other reptile store that is knowledgable and professional. This great reptile store is willing to look at my ball python and see if shell eat and if they cant get her to eat they recommend a vet visit asap. But unfortunately right now my ball python is dying and wont make it.. I want to take her to the vet right now as Im typing this but nobody will see her cause the time and theres no emergency reptile vets around.. So I have to sit here and feel terrible about my dying ball python because I chose to get her from this horrible pet store that sells sick animals. Even the fish Ive gotten from here have died shortly after getting them.. So take this story and experience how you wish but Im being 100% honest. I will be reporting this place to animal control along with the other guy that posted a review. But to sum it all up... Horrible conditions... Bad personalities. Lies to sell... Lack of knowledge.. They give you opinions.. Not knowledge :/ and very impatient people. Other pet stores have even said bad things about this place. So if you want sick pets come here.. If you want healthy pets go somewhere else. Anywhere is better then here.. I could find healthier animals in the sewer. I think Ive said enough. Hope people take this and listen cause its a very horrible things to lose a pet like I currently am...

This place has a great variety of fish and aquarium plants, for that I would give them five stars, however, the customer service can be lacking at times. Its really the luck of the draw, some days its been good, other days, not so good. You will never get greeted in the store. No one will ever come to you and ask if you need help. If you need help you will need to find someone and ask. For every one associate that I like I will find four that are detached, seemingly uninterested, and occasionally downright rude. They are quite busy at times and it will sometimes be a while before there is an available associate to assist you. You cant blame them for that, they only have so many people there. Its when theyre not busy and you still need to hunt someone down, thats a bit frustrating. They tend to be knowledgeable but I have been given wrong information. I was sold a plant and was told it was a nice background plant for a 75, it would get about 20" in length. After getting home and doing some research I found the plant was a foreground to midground plant that maxes out at 6. That being said, most the the information I get from the associates is correct. I am concerned, however, that they never prod for information. I went there and bought two 1.5" clown loaches. The associate did not ask what size tank I had (they get large), did not ask what other fish I had, or explain that they are best in large groups. I knew all this, but he didnt know I did. I have this experience there a lot. If I ask a pointed question I will get a knowledgeable answer but I feel they should be more proactive and ask questions about my setup or at least give the appropriate facts. All in all, a good store, great variety, and decent prices. Just dont expect great customer service.

I called to see if they had a specific type of catfish. 2 employees later, Im told yes, they have 3. Great. I drive there the next day, there for an hour. Not 1 out of (what seemed like) 15 employees made eye contact or offered assistance. I poured over every tank no less than 3x, looking for not 1, but 3 specific catfish I was told were there. I know catfish. I know they can be hard to spot, tend to hide, etc. I did come across 3 related variety of catfish...and instantly knew. The employees either made me feel like I was in their way or that I had some sort of repellent affect on them, as none would come near me. Quite the opposite. Approaching a group of employees was like turning the lights on a bunch of cockroaches. Theyd scatter. Finally, an hour of frustration, no thanks to poor lighting, I ask an employee about the fish I was told were there. Off she goes to ask someone else...Im standing in line behind 3 customers by the time she comes back to tell me what I already figured out myself 45 mins ago. And that loud, smarmy woman at the register...no title or even ownership can justify they way she talks to customers, carries herself, or how she represents this buisness. Im a huge supporter of small, independent businesses and am an experienced pet owner. I have 2 brand new aquariums with live plants that I was hoping to fill with many fish today. This trip was an utterly failure. Never coming back.

House of Tropicals has a great selection of marine life. You will almost certainly find what you are looking for amongst their numerous tanks. However once you have decided on a purchase you will have to run the gauntlet of dealing with their employees, specifically the fish wranglers. You might as well flip a coin at this point, if you are lucky you will find an intelligent employee that knows and cares about fish keeping. On the other hand you may be forced to deal with one of the buffoons who knows nothing. I encountered the latter the last time I made a purchase at this store. The fish wrangler, who gave off a parolee vibe with his leg tattoo stating something about drinking, clearly had no knowledge of fish and did not care. Purchasing small fish I was surprised when he picked up a net large enough to hold a basketball to catch them. This led to him chasing the fish around the tank indifferent to the fact he was sloshing the fish amongst the plants and everything else in the tank, injuring who knows how many. After he managed to catch the fish he proceeded to move them from net to specimen container. At least one fish BY HAND! Thats right he grabbed the fish from the net and tossed it by hand into the container. Who hires these people? Does the store participate in hiring excons and mentally handicapped people?
