I recently took my girlfriend here for her first time golfing, as its a pretty good beginner course. The fees are a little high for what you get ($18 to walk 9 holes; I remember paying $10 this summer, though), but Im also used to Rochester MN golf which is, as the kids are wont to say, a turnt cray fly bargain. The course is fairly well maintained for a nine hole course. Usually, if a nine hole course accompanies a 18 hole course, you wonder if the nine holer is just a hack and slash for the t-shirt and jeans crowd. But thats not the case for Highland 9. A lot of older people, dads with their kids (not sons, kids), and casual golfers or beginners out to have a good but respectful time. IOW, a nice community golf course. As to the course itself, the tee boxes are in pretty good shape and the greens tend to be on the slow side. There is very little water or sand on any of the holes, and greens tend to be somewhat elevated. The fairways are wide and the trees are well-planned to cut off dog legs and other common golf shenanigans. The rough is a little low for my liking; I like that threat of Lyme disease as an extra nudge for fairway play. One word of warning: they play a game called "footgolf" here, where you kick a soccer ball from flag to flag. Most of the people who play are courteous and observe better golf etiquette than the average golfer. But just dont be surprised to see people walking across the fairway. Or mistake their flags for the golf flags (<-- actual reason for this paragraph). Finally, its not busy. Its easy to walk on and most people keep a good pace of play (at least half the people are walkers, a pretty high percentage these days). And one more thing - theres only street parking. You can park along Hamline and pray that its an easterly wind on hole 1.

If I could give it zero stars I would. This is the worst golf course in America. If you plan on playing here bring at least 20 balls because the rough hasnt been cut in two weeks making it impossible to find your balls. I have golfed all over and this is easily the worst course I have ever played at. I have played this course since I was 8 and have seen no improvements over 9 years. I have only watched this course be poorly kept and slowly destroyed

If you brand new to golf, then its a good place to play. If you already play golf and know what its like to play at a nicer course, then dont play here. Very rough shape, cant tell where the rough begins and the fairways end
