After two visits to the new Xscape theater in HOWELL, NJ Im sad to say Im going to have to continue using Freeholds AMC multiplex. I thought this would be a great escape from the massive crowds in freehold but two strikes for us and you are out. Our first visit was about 5 weeks ago and the first impression was "eh", nothing great, typical over priced tickets and concessions and usual tacky decor. Our theater was the last one on the right and on entering it was disgustingly stuffy and hot. We thought, its the end of May and warm out so ok, the a/c might not be set low enough. Went out and found the manager and asked if he would adjust the hvac system. back to the movie and all good. The seats are ok but cant compare to the AMC freehold seats where the arm rest lifts up and the seats recline completely to feel as though you are in bed with your loved one; Freehold seats are unbelievable and Xscape seats are just ok. sorry Xscape, you dont impress. This past weekend we went back for another try. $32.00 for two adult tickets to Star Trek, over priced concessions after waiting on line for 9 minutes. pop into the restroom before the show and OMG it was disgusting; i will not describe what I encountered here but trust me, there was a desperate need of attention in the ladies room. enter into their "exclusive " theater we paid more money for and another slap in the face; stuffy and stagnant hot air again, wth Xscape; are you trying to save money on the electric bill? Back out and hunt down the manager, who was working the concession stand and was polite and kind and agreed to , "look into it". back to the theater where my legs stuck to the pleather seats from the stuffy hot air. we considered leaving but come on, $32 and we have to sweat??? WTH ? never will we go back and i fully intend to share my experience on my blog and social media sites. """"" 3/1/2017""""""UPDATE-Xscape does care about their CS, I was contacted based on my poor experience with an attempt to give X scape another chance. Since our "unpleasant" experiences we have been back 4 times and can confirm that the temperature was comfortable, the seats are recliners and wide bodied but unfortunately no arm rest movement, tickets are comparable to others, the concessions compare to others, the restrooms were still lacking (sticky floor and unkempt appearing) the one thing that stands out are the lack of crowds compared to freehold. So to be fair, I am changing my personal review of Howells Xscape to a 3.8 star. Thank you Xscape for caring about our experiences.

This review is with a heavy heart . My son and I go here all the time to watch primarily new 1st week release movies on the Xtreme Screen . Normally it is an awesome experience I.E. Dolby Atmos Sound reclining seats and good snacks and drinks . The Xtreme Screen experience is a big plus in watching a Blockbuster Movie . Seems more immersive than a regular screen by far . Today I went to see Atomic Blonde playing on Xtreme Screen 3 . After 10mins in I went to complain to the manager that the movie does not fill the screen like at home when watching a movie with bars on top and bottom AKE aspect ratio does not match screen 2.35 instead of 1.85 . He saw the issue and tried to tell me that because its shot in Scope a.ke. 2.35 ratio thats why it looks like that if they fill the screen your feet would block the view . Hilarious I thought as other theatres at least have motorized curtains that are black and are adjusted accordingly top bottom and sides to frame the movie or mask the movie as some people call it . Even the GM seemed unapologetic like 90% of the movies are that way he said . Not true on the movies that are showed on the Xtreme Screen that my son and I have seen 25 or so did not look like what I saw today . NOT COOL ADVERTISING XTREME SCREEN when you get a letterbox style movie on TV not an immersiv experience. Very dissatisfied with the lack of concern from upper management. Not worth the extra $$$ unless I would have the ability like at home to zoom in a.k.e. change format to fill the screen . I dont know too many people that pay for a 65"+ screen tv and dont do that so the movie is more immersiv. For 40+ years broadcast tv would do that . Remember when before the movie would start it would say the format has been adjusted from original to fit your screen . If showing a movie on Xtreme Screen either only show 1.85 format movies or mask the 2.35 format or make aspect ratio adjustment to fill the screen. When Im paying for a big screen experience that is what I expect otherwise I would pay less and see the movie on regular screen . Summary if Im paying extra to see a movie shown on a 70x30 ( 2100 sq. Ft ) Screen and Im shown a movie at roughly 70x21 ( 1470 sg ft ) I feel cheated . Thats 30% less SCREEN for a premium price . Less for more does not sound like a goid deal to me . LOL

I will not be returning. The temperature in the room was so hot that by the time we left the theater everyone was sweaty. One of the members in my party left the theater after it started to find someone to fix it and get a cold drink, but the concessions was busy and there were no available people. He came back in because he didnt want to miss anymore of the movie. This same person has a Pacemaker and heart problems. This is my main concern! Warm temperatures can cause him great difficulty breathing and an elevated heart rate. After the movie I tried to talk to a manege and waited about 10 minutes. I could tell that he really didnt want to talk to us so he hesitated. After I told him my concern about the temperature and that I wanted my money back for such an awful experience, the first thing he said was "Did you watch the whole movie?" Thus implying that since it has passed, that you no longer claim any responsibility for your customer. If this is your business practice, it needs to change immediately, because you have just lost 4 local customers. My intent with this message is simple, I want you to be aware that this is not good customer service. Especially since this is a new theater. I understand that this manager maybe VERY young and inexperienced, but he needs to be trained properly. When dealing with customers that are already upset, please dont make them more upset by antagonizing them and patronizing them as if they were beneath you.

Theater 2 smells horrible!! As soon as you walk in the theater, it smelled like someone urinated all over the theater. I informed an employee who in turn went into the theater and agreed that it smelled like pee initially but throughout the theater it smelled like mildew. I asked them was they going to spray or something and they said management was coming. Management literally walked towards the theater and pass the theater and didnt have a care in the world about the smell, and told the employee to just go ahead and spray. That is when I decided to write this review. Mind you that I am a frequent customer of this location AND this is the first time I have ever experienced anything such as this, HOWEVER after seeing management reaction, I do not believe I will be coming back. Use to be a really nice theater but I do not believe this theater is worth the cost anymore.
