Fair warning. I gave it a VG on facilities b/c this place is usually freezing. Bring a coat! So here is a smack in the middle of downtown Indie theater that does Indie theaters right. They have foreign films, documentaries, and some really good sundace/cannes/etc festival winners as well as some lesser known pictures going on. I remember watching Submarine here while having a beer at my seat. Yep! Beer at the seat. They have a full bar! As well as good food and a coffee bar for the responsible movie goer. The seating is general, not stadium, but this hasnt been a problem at all. All theaters are small and only hold so many people but Ive never seen them fill up or get over crowded. Theres always plenty of room and the people who attend these movies are very respectful to other goers and wont be annoying like the kids over at Chinatowns Regal. Another warning. Youll most likely have 0 cell reception, which is good, because you shouldnt be the idiot flashing your phone around during the movie! So all in all, if you enjoy movies and you enjoy the fact that they treat it with an adult manner, then youll really like this place.

After living in DC for 7+ years, I can say this is my favorite theater in DC. Its in downtown DC near Chinatown so it has that city feel to it. They play more independent, interesting movies and its at a slightly cheaper price than nearby commercial Regal Cinema. You walk in, buy your ticket, and then go downstairs to the concession stands. This is where you feel like youre in someones home. The food options go beyond and better than your normal theater food choices and they offer hard cider, wine, and beer (AWESOME!). The theaters themselves arent super big so it feels a little more like home. Before your movie starts, an employee personally welcomes you to the show (great touch). Warning: If you have AT&T you wont get cell service once you go down the escalators. You shouldnt be on your cell any way in a theater, but FYI in case you need to renew Park Mobile, etc. while there.

Unless a really interesting Hollywood film comes out (like Star Wars), this is the only movie theater I go to in DC. It has a good mix of popular indie films, although I think it used to show more underground and foreign stuff back-in-the-day. But, generally: accessible location, cheap tickets, great atmosphere, robust snack selection, great film selection, never too crowded, often has director and really cool midnight screenings...I could go on. I try to go at least once a week, but, depending on the depth of quality films out , I sometimes indulge myself with an extra matinee. Its worth it. Its my go-to chill out spot/recluse away the hectic jungle that is DC professional life.

The venue was lovely, big and spacious. There was only one other viewer in the theatre, in addition to me and my friend, so it made for a private-feeling experience. Location is accessible from the Gallery-place metro station, and signage makes it easily identifiable. Four stars because my credit card didnt work at the entrance for the first three tries, and then didnt work at the concession either. I used the same card earlier that day and immediately after the theatre without a hitch, so it seemed to be a machine issue. The concession attendant was upset about trying the card a second time, although no other customers were in line.

Have been coming here for the past two years. Theater is always very well maintained. The concessions really stand out here. There is regularly a specials menu for the cocktails in addition to beer/wine, and the food choices are a bit outside the realm of your typical AMC or Regal fare -- think crab cakes, chicken fingers, soft pretzels stuffed with either jalapeno cheddar or crabcake. The popcorn is tasty and they have different seasonings (garlic and parmesan; white cheddar; etc). Price is reasonable compared to AMC/regal. Will continue going.

I am a frequent guest of this theatre. The concession stand has a variety of delicious options. There is also a limited wet bar. The movies are always new and mostly films that are not the usual Hollywood blockbusters. The theatres are usually clean and the bathrooms in working order. My only complaint is that they only have 1 set of restrooms by the confessions. If you were at the last theatre at the end of a very long hallway, you would have to race to the end of the hall, then past the concession stand in order to get there.

Very cool, indie movie theater. The first one I ever went to that served alcohol in the US. I didnt think that existed here. Theres mostly, if not entirely, indie movies playing. Theres also the occasional midnight showing of such cult favorites as Rocky Horror Picture Show or Black Dynamite. This theater also took part in the Brazilian Embassys film series where I saw O Homem do Futuro at starring Wagner Moura from Netflixs Narcos. Its a great theater to go to just dont expect the big budget Hollywood movies to play here.

Downtown, accessible, independent films, Junior Mints next to an artisan cheese plate at concessions. Films that aren’t playing anywhere else in DC (save for the Uptowner). It’s one of the best places to slip into after work during the week on a rainy day (super busy on the weekends for obvious reasons, i.e. the antithesis of Regal Cinemas at Gallery Place). Also, I drank a Magic Hat #9 out of a plastic cup with a straw. Yes, yes I did. Tip: book your tickets ahead of time online through their website (not on Fandango).

I have to say this place is one of the most overpriced places Ive been to in the DC area, which is sad because DC is a generally expensive place to be. The beer and wine selection, although pretty decent, is pricier than going to Nationals Park. A guiness costs $13. Wine is the same. Seats are mediocre and havent been updated since the theatres opening. I am very disappointed and will not be going here again. I prefer Bethesda or the AFI silver theatre. I hope this place survives, but if it doesnt, Ill know why.

This is a wonderful theatre. Comfortable seats and an amazing collection of snacks and libations - including a pretty-well-stocked bar. We attended the DC Shorts Film Festival here so spent 14 hours watching short films: point being that we got a pretty-good exposure - and really enjoyed it. Note that there is generally no phone reception while in the theatre area: its downstairs and phone signals dont get thru, but you shouldnt be on your phone while youre watching movies anyway. :)

the reason I didnt give E Street Cinema all 5 Stars is because the movie selection is very skimp and almost weird. No matter how controversial the movie or how many people rave about it, E Street Cinema will not play it. I have been able to catch two movies at this theater, but Its hard to continue to come back when there arent many interesting options like a normal theater. The concession is definitely one of a kind. very impressed and I like the fact that the theaters are small.

One of the greatest independent theaters of our time. This place captures the novelty of cinemas of yore when going to the movies was a classy affair. After entering, you go down a flight of stairs to the theaters, but don’t be so hasty to sit down that you pass up the concessions area. This place has a fantastic selection of treats and snacks, including many healthy options. I like their iced coffee which is very reasonably priced.
