I give these guys 5 stars because they deserve it for a number of reasons, not the least of which is HONESTY. If you want a clerk to pander to your ego, go to the wal-mart of petstores or a boutique fish shop like Neptunes. If you want professionals who know their stuff and will steer you straight, and maybe even tell you when youre wrong, then you can find it here. I laugh at the people who complain about the dark and the smell and (gasp!) WATER everywhere. duh. Imagine that. A fish place that smells fishy and has water. I wonder if these folks have ever stepped foot in Shedd aquarium or places of that sort. They are dark because it makes the fish easier to see. The floors are wet because they sell things that are in water. When it comes to living creatures, its the creatures who count, not your feelings...causing stress and scale damage to an entire tank of fish just so you can have that specific one from the school is NOT reasonable. These guys try to get you the fish you find attractive, and they usually ask me if its ok before they scoop from the tank, but then I know that just catching the fish actually exposes them to scale/slimecoat injury and I take that into consideration. Key word here is consideration, aimed at the fish, not at my overblown sense of entitlement. Ive been annoyed in fish shops by parents who are teaching their kids the wrong things through their behaviour. Ive educated kids in front of their parents in pet shops because frankly, the animals are more important than your feelings. The bottom line for this shop is it isnt pretty, but it doesnt need to be to do the job properly. Fish Den has a very good selection of supplies for both salt and fresh and theyre crowded, but its for a reason. Their livestock selection is usually very good, but as with all shops that deal with living things, there are seasonal availability issues to deal with. Their customer service is without fault. They have always asked if I needed help, and either left me alone when I said I was just looking, or came back to check on me later to see if I was ready. I call that good customer service. The older guy always greets me when I enter. Something I do at work myself as part of "customer service". What you have here is a difference of opinion. As an aquarium afficionado I appreciate what they do. As a person who works in customer service for a federal agency, I appreciate their ability to refrain from smacking some of the customers Ive seen in their store, and their ill-mannered children!

I ventured over to Fish Den for some medication for my betta because I couldnt find remedies that were proper at the local chain pet stores. Let me preface this with the fact I have owned several aquariums, many communities with betta fish. Currently I have a betta in a 20 gallon tank with some community fish. He showed no signs of stress and actually was very happy playing with the platys I added. Well, the platys were new and brought ich with them. So I go down there for something to treat it and some kid who is in his 20s starts spouting off that bettas live in puddles in the wild and that they belong in vases. He tried to sell me a cup that was less than 8oz to keep the betta in. I declined and chose to treat the betta in the cup Id bought him in at Petco, since it was bigger and easier to dose. This infuriated me because he loves being in a community tank, and has been healthy until this. The man offered no good advice and just sold me the product. I decided to tour their fish section and was disgusted by what I say. There is a gourami the size of three dinner plates and probably six inches thick in a 55 gallon tank. It cant even turn around. This is not humane. Almost all of their tanks are overcrowded, full of algae, and just miserable looking. The tank showroom with the empty tanks is stacked to the ceiling. The merchandise isnt labeled with prices, the shelves are dirty and crowded...I will not be going back or recommending them. I got better advice at the local Petco.

This store flat out lies about the results of their water quality test so they dont have to honor their "guarantee" on freshwater fish. Additionally their fish are very unhealthy and will infect your tank with fungal infections. After having half the fish I bought from them die within 24 hours in my quarantine tank, I tested their water with a master test kit and my ammonia level was under .25PPM which is an acceptable level for a quarantine tank. I then took a water sample to them since they require it to honor their "guarantee" When the clerk at the counter tested my sample it registered over .50PPM ammonia and they refused to honor their guarantee. I went home and immediately tested my water again to find it was still well under .25PPM The fish themselves died of a fungal infection which was easy to see by the fuzzy white spots growing on their bodies. The unprofessional grungy looking kids working at the store did not even want to look at their bodies to see what I was talking about, instead insisting that high ammonia killed the fish. One fish even died in the bag before we even left the store. That should have been a big enough warning but I unfortunately ignored it. The tanks in the store are dirty and many had dead fish or fish with ragged fins from "fin rot" please do not give them your money.

If I could give zero stars, I would. I have been in search of a decent fish supply spot in Denver. After trying another store and having several fish die soon after bringing them home, I decided to give Fish Den a try. I went in simply to buy some fish food, and was completely ignored the entire time I was there. After walking around the store to check out the quality and selection of fish, I went up to the register to check out. One older gentleman was at the register with another customer, saw me, and walked away to answer another persons question. No "someone will be with you in a minute" - nothing. Then several other workers came up to the register with fish other customers were buying. None of those customers were at the register yet. I waited - no one acknowledged me standing there clearly waiting to pay. I waited a good 5 -10 minutes thinking surely someone would see me and ring me up. NOPE. So I finally said "Can someone ring me up for these things?" and one of them was clearly irritated by me and rang me up. Another guy apologized - I can understand being busy. What I cant understand is not acknowledging a person who is standing there waiting. Thats not acceptable to me. I wont be back.

As much as I want to support my LFS, Fish Dens prices are just too high. Nearly every item in the store is the double the price of what you can get it for on Amazon. Their tank prices are also very high. I compared them to another local vendor, and Fish Dens price was almost double, for a smaller tank, too ($599 for a 125g, compared to the other vendors price of $330 for a 135g - both standard glass tanks). They also dont do refunds. When I asked to return two unopened, new heaters I bought a couple weeks prior for a refund, they only offered store credit. I would be fine with that policy if we were talking about something like fish, perishable food or used items, but unopened, boxed and sealed accessories? That seems pretty inflexible. I realize Fish Den is a small operation that cant exactly compete with someone like Amazon, and I do think the employees do a great job, but I think they can do a much better job with their pricing. Personally I wont be back unless they start offering a price match guarantee or drop prices across the board to be more competitive with the market.
