I feel I should preface before I continue explaining why I avoid going to this theater and why any of the pros are not enough to keep me there. -Preface- Yes, it is great that Dubuque has a locally owned and operated cinema. Yes, I am a huge supporter of Dubuques film community. Yes, I believe the owners have the best intentions for their customers, employees and film aficionados. But their upkeep is unexceptionable. -Pros- Im sure they have great popcorn but I havent had it. I do appreciate their wide selection of concession items but Im the kind of guy who rather bring his own if any. They also offer a beers and a variety of caffeinated drinks that isnt usual of the area (as far as theaters go). This venue also does a great job a trying to support the community when it comes to arts. -Cons- I almost had to resole my shoes every move I attempted due to the permanent adhesive covering the theater floor. It seemed every other seat I chose had the back blown out or was in dire need of repair. Their seating format is not a risen stadium style so I feel guilty if I were sitting directly in front of anyone. Most of the time my drink had to rest on the sticky floor because of the lack of cup holders. Not to mention this theatre usually drew a noisy crowed so my viewing was sometimes disrupted by unfavorable sound effects. Worst of all (and I promise this is no exaggeration) every time I have seen a movie, something had gone wrong. No noise, didnt start, stops halfway through, cant get it started so they offer a refund (AMC anyone?). They know they got problems. Do something about it...

This local theater is fantastic. They are personable me offer. Wide variety of concessions (including alcohol and coffee bar) and movies to choose from at an affordable cost. They show both mainstream movies to draw in the crowds and may show a more obscure /independent movie once in awhile too. They are also great at allowing showings for personal viewings and/or community fundraisers. It IS an old and worn movie theater but with price of tickets and concessions at the chain theaters, Ill take it. They are slowly working on improving the interior. Its FAMILY FRIENDLY- My young children prefer this theater over the fancier, bigger, more expensive theater because its far more family friendly. Its not as loud and scary for sensitive viewers (or their ears) and the smallness is less intimidating. They also offer a lot of non-3D showings which my young children were scared of for quiet awhile. Also, if one of my children ended up getting scared, theres a waiting area out front for us to wait to meet the rest of the family. I also didnt feel like I was wasting a ton of money if they got scared and wanted to take a break from the movie.

I love the Mindframe! The only time I have seen a movie out at AMC since the Mindframe has been open was if MF didnt have the movie in 2D and I REALLY wanted to see it. Prices are better, staff friendlier, and snacks are never stale. What a reviewer below needs to realize that they are at the whim of the distributors just like any other theater and they dont have a corporate big wig behind them. They get movies the AMC doesnt and they are working hard to provide a real sense of community for Dubuque. They sponsor a wide variety of events on site, do regular midnight showings WITH prizes given out, and have the distinction of being independent. Also I have NEVER gone in and had my shoes sticking to the floor because of spilled pop, the bathrooms are always clean, and the place is always pleasant to be in. The same cannot be said about the AMC, which by the way is a NEW theater, maybe 10 years old at most. How many theaters do you go into and have a chance to speak with the owners? people who are true movie buffs and take real enjoyment in their business instead of just clocking their hours for their paycheck?

They asked for ratings on facebook, so here you go. This place drives me crazy. They say they are an independent movie theatre, but in reality, they show the exact same crapy that the Big Box on the West end shows. While they may have little control over what it is they show, it does not change the fact that I have no interest in seeing about 85% of their movies. Several of the theaters are in really poor shape; seats broken, stuffing coming out, bad, opaque screens, bad sound. IF the AMC and Mindframe have the same film, Im generally go to the west end. Not because I really want to, but only because the theatre is at least maintained. Tree of Life arrived three weeks before it hit stores on DVD/Blu Ray. And Id seen it two months before in Madison and MInneapolis. It lasted one week at Mindframe, and I"m certain its because few people went to see it. Such a film relies upon word of mouth, and that takes time. Sadly, the best thing about Mindframe is the ticket stubs and the popcorn, and the fact that its generally $2 less than the AMC. But at least the AMC has comfortable seating and decent sound.

Love Mindframe! *** Pros: Friendly and personable staff, Fair prices, Community oriented, Clean theaters and bathrooms, Free for use lounge area in lobby (you dont need to buy a movie ticket to use it), Serves alcohol *** Cons: New staff members are not well trained on more advanced things (esp. Patron Cards), Older theater compared to AMC *** Mindframe is a great business and Im glad theyre in Dubuque. The movies move quickly because there are a lot to see! They dont have as many screens as AMC, so they cant have the same amount of movies. They get wide release films, but they are also dedicated to finding indie movies. If you request a movie, they will do their best to get it. Like Kat said, they are at the whim of the distributors. Whether youve had a great or terrible experience at Mindframe, contact them directly. Steve and Grant are very helpful and would love to hear your feedback. Please support the theater thats supporting our community!

I always enjoy you going to Mindframe. The atmosphere is great and lively with a friendly staff. It has a welcoming lobby with couches and tables that has become a social hub to the area where you can enjoy a wide variety of snacks and drinks including beer and wine. They always have the latest movies but include a lot of variety with documentaries and independent films, a true supporter of the industry. Everything is in digital HD for the latest in entertainment technology. To top it off they are locally and independently owned and do a great deal to support the community. As a bonus they will accommodate social functions, we have to several parties where people have rented the space to entertain. They have a stage, kids can play video games on the big screen or have a private movie. Its a great local space and I highly recommend it.

The movie was great. No problems with the sound or picture. When we got there 2 employees were smoking outside the front doora. Then we got inside and noticed there were fish in coffee pots on the tables... floating at the top of the water. I asked the man at the concessions if they were real he laughed and said "yeah, they have been there since Finding Dory came out (June of 2016), I cant believe they are still alive". The floors in the theater were so sticky my flip flops stuck to the floor, and no, the fish still hadnt moved when we left after the movie. Gross.
