IDOC still patrols this prison. We were caught leaving there about a week before the labor day fire. They took our weapons but we werent arrested or IDd. I suppose the day would be a better time to go in. Id like to go back to explore the courtyard, but Im a little shooken up from my last visit. Part of the floor has collapsed in the main building, which is very hazardous. I hope this place is saved. It is very historic. It was built by the first prisoners in the 1850s and housed civil war POWs, as well as been on lots of TV shows and movies.

It did house john Wayne gacy when he first went to prison. I was there with him. It was either in late 79 or 1980. He was only there doing orientation like all prisoners. He was then transfered to death row somewhere else. I still remember when they moved him around they locked the entire prison down. We could see him moving across the yard through the windows on our tier. He always had 2 guards with shotguns on each side off him and I remember he was kinda fat smokin a cigar.

We walked around the outside of the prison & read the historical markers they have for people to read. But before these fires the city of Joliet should have made this into tourist attraction in which you can walk inside the prison & see everything. Make the old dining hall into a cafeteria where the people serving the food are dressed as Correctional Officers & the food is served on prison trays. Charge people money to see it!!!!

This is an extremely cool and historic place to check out. It only takes about 20 to 30 minutes to check out all of the signs decribing the prisons history and to look at all of the parts that you can legally check out (and peek through the windows at the signs of those who explored a bit further i.e. graffiti, broken bottles). Because of this, its probably a good idea to stop by while on the way to another destination.

I was a inmate here 98/99 ......to see it in this condition is very sad, we need to preserve this prison for many reasons.... it would bring great Revenue to both the state of Illinois and Joliet but it would also service a reminder to those who havent yet made a mistake in their life to see what a REAL prison looks like! If these walls could talk many could learn from what they had to say

i was in protective custody there from 1994 to 2001 worked in the laundry building for 85 cents a day it was rough in terms of the mental state of inmates even corrupt guards who would get you anything you wanted "for a price" but i survived - and in a strange weird way, very weird way - i miss those very very simple days everything was taken care of for you - provided

I hope the historical society gets their way and are able to open this prison up for tours. I would love to see the inside. However the outside is very cool. And sorry to say that it did not house John Wayne Gacy. He was housed at Menard Correctional and later transferred to Stateville were he was executed.

If youre a Blues Brothers fan or a fan of the Prison Break series this must be a stop for you. Its a very eerie place and strangely accessible if youre that way inclined. You can feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up just looking up at the windows.

Someone who wins the lottery should use the money to open a restaurant in the old prison and hire a chef who creates the menu with jail themed items, schedule tours, blue brothers jazzy music, etc. One could make some money here as a tourist attraction.

Looks cool but when I got out of my car to walk around the bldg. Police pulled up and informed me I could not do so, which I found strange since it is now a tourist attraction. So I really didnt get to see much at all which was a disappointment.

Walk around the outside, check out all the details and wonder how anyone fit in some of the really narrow guard house doors! Be sure and go across the street and check out the old womens prison.

Absolutely beautiful place. Just wish you could actually go inside and see everything. It is still worth the almost 4 hour drive to walk around outside of it though.

A firm but fair warden, but some shocking issues with unreliable electricity. And in case you are ever asked... DO NOT say yes to an avocado sandwich.

What if we all cared?
Very cool place, but needs to offer tours. Even a tour with limited access would be awesome and attract a lot more tourist activity.

Too bad this place isnt open for visitors. Theres not much you can see from outside, but still worth the trip out.

It was awesome but needs to being a touring prison! Sad all the destruction people have broke in and done to it!
