My wife and I spent this Valentines Day in Ojai and came across people who raved about the BBQ from 1100am to 700pm on Sundays at The Deer Lodge. Perfect, right? WRONG!! We drove to this place and had a welcoming image of huge BBQ pits out front. People were getting their plates filled with food...it all looked great! We walked into the restaurant with no one to seat us or let us know how everything "worked". I had to chase down a lady who worked there just to get information on who we pay for our food. (It was like 300pm when we got there) She tells us that they have put a hold on (out) serving BBQ for now...WHAT?!?! OUT OF BBQ on a day when your suppose to have it available 11am to 7pm!!!! People were filling up their plates and we were basically told that we couldnt have any. We said, SCREW IT! And left. As we left, people were still getting food from the person serving BBQ there at the pits. I had a huge feeling that were discrminated against because we didnt arrive on a motorcycle and/or were not dressed like bikers. For anyone out there who enjoy being refused service and discrminated against, then this is the place for you!

Let me just start by saying, Ive been in the Bar/Restaurant industry for the past 20 yrs. I recently moved to the Ojai area in the past few months and have visited the deer lodge about 5 times. My first impression was WOW what a gold mine! Then after meeting the same bartenders every visit, who in my opinion are the face of the "Deer Lodge" I quickly realized that I may be better off sitting at a table. Speaking from experience, I can say its time the owners change up there bartenders. They are clueless! The service is hurendis. The ambiance is priceless, what an amazing feeling sitting in the place! The entertainment is perfect! If the management has the heart to make some positive changes behind there bar, the Deer Lodge will be reservations only with a line down the 33 stretching into Oak View.

Made a reservation at 7:45, and waited over an hour to get bread (that never showed up), a starter, and the entrees that we had ordered at the same time. Outside seating and it started to get chilly and we werent checked on. Had to ask a busboy to turn on the outdoor heater near us. Also had to ask someone to check on the food (who turned out to be with the band, not a waiter, she told us it is always usually slow service). Extremely poor and slow service. Other party served and checked on frequently. The starter came at the same time the entee did. Over an hour later. Once again no bread. Pretty restaurant, good food and good music. The fried chicken was good but the gumbo was a let down, not much flavor at all nor spice. Although, I live almost an hour away so this is very inconvenient.

8-12-07 listening to these reviews i must have eaten at a different place called the deer lodge, but the address was the same and it said deer lodge out front. i ordered a ice tea after a long hard motorcycle ride. it looked like water with a faint tint of brown in it, and it tasted like perfume was added to it. then i ordered the tri tip sandwich for 13.99, and it probably had 3 0z of meat on it, just enough to cover the surface of the roll. it was the worse tri tip sandwich and the worse ice tea i have ever tasted and im 56 yrs old. service was just as bad. good luck. ps... i had a beer instead, and i dont drink. i figured they cant mess that up.

My girlfriend and I first visited Deer Lodge 8n 2012 and loved it. Great ambiance, really unique menu, and delicious food. Unfortunately not all things in Ojai can remain the same. Three years later and the ambiance/decor remain the same, but the menu sadly has not. Its now mainly BBQ and basic gastropub. The bison burger was a major let down with a poor bun to patty ratio and a dry bun. The BBQ was good, but not worth a repeat visit. The only saving grace was the goat cheese cheesecake which was amazing.

The best thing about this place is Happy Hour all day on Monday. The prices are reasonable and most of the appetizers are good. The chicken tenders are probably the worst thing on the menu. Id recommend the fries and peppers. Good beer selection ($5 during happy hour). The only other issue is that there are a ton of flies outside and they can be pretty annoying. Not sure how that can be fixed. Otherwise, good experience overall.

First, to all the complainers; its a BIKER BAR that serves food, has been for years. Shouldve been here 25 years ago when all they had was frozen pizza. Today, great food, great destination for two wheels. A lot of nice bikes go thru. Waitress we had most recently was all over us seeing if we needed anything. Only thing we needed was a way to transport our left-over food..we were stuffed.

Ive been coming here for last 4 yrs...its definitely getting better and better with food. Good selection of craft beer on tap. Very good hamburger and truffle brussel sprout. Wish the music started earlier 9.30 and 10 too late . The former owners had music in the afternoons! Please bring that back your get more folks!. Young women owners and servers. Crowd all ages.

Ive been visiting Ojai for my entire life and have never eaten at the Deer Lodge until today. I must say the ambiance is everything you could want in a restaurant. Lots of sun and a great rustic feel. The food matches the rustic feel, prime BBQ and delicious mac n cheese. If youre looking for a true Ojai dining experience, visit the deer lodge on a Sunday afternoon.

The first time we tried deer lodge we were impress with their macaroni and cheese and steak dinner but the second time we were disappointed because I ordered fried chicken and I got chicken strips like mcdonalds we drove a long ways just to eat there now I just go to prime stk house for their fabulous meat and to wood ranch for their delicious macaroni and cheese.

Was very excited to go to the Deer Lodge, came from Texas to Ojai. Guess I got the untrained cook, my stake was raw ice cold, my friends pork RAW, other friends salmon RAW... sent my stake back came back burn to a crisp. MY friends enjoy their drinks, and we were given a 50% discount, only had to pay $60.00 to get Ill, guess it is better than $120..

Great rustic lodge setting restaurant with a nice outdoor patio area, which is dog friendly. Walking up, youve got the large smoker preparing some delicious smoked meats! Staff was very friendly and the bloody Marys were delicious. Had the brisket sandwich with the chili - hit the spot perfectly! Great outdoor seating area on a nice day.

Really eclectic, good vibe, local favorite place. You kind of get to choose your own adventure by opting for outside or inside, so choose wisely. We had the Elk Tenderloin special (wow), the Buffalo short rib (also wow) and roadhouse romaine. The service wasnt especially profound, but they were friendly. Overall a great Ojai experience.
