I grew up in New England and I remember The Stone Zoo was often the butt of jokes due to its lack of animals. I think it went through different phases. It never compared to the now defunct, Bensons Animal Farm. Unfortunately, I think some of this reputation has unfairly stuck around... this is a very fun zoo packed full with interesting animals!!! Dont get me wrong... this isnt the San Diego Zoo, or a big-city Zoo like youll find in Los Angeles or Portland... but it is super charming and you can see everything from Mountain Lions to Wolves to Snow Leopards!!! I very much enjoyed seeing unique animals. I go to a lot of zoos when I visit places, and I cant remember the last time I saw a Yack! It was very cool. The bat cave is the stinkiest thing Ive ever smelled... so be careful there. The only thing I didnt like was the over-priced store. It was winter when we went and our son got his feet wet in the puddles, and we forgot to pack an extra pair of socks. ONE pair of toddler socks was $10! Seemed like a high price to pay for a single pair of toddler socks. Go with fair expectations and have an wonderful time!!! We loved it!!! PS... Check with your local library! They may have discount tickets!!! PPS... Come on people... "Zoo Lights" is a separate event to see (guess what?) LIGHTS!!! This event is NOT for seeing the animals. Dont complain you didnt see many animals if you just go for Zoo Lights!!!

Right to the POINT. Attend the "The Wild Affair" on June 22nd it is one of the great events of the year. Polcaris, Rain Forest Cafe, Harrows, Fuddruckers, Whole Foods and a dozen other food and a few beer brewers setup around the zoo while you enjoy a behind the scenes show at the zoo. Youll see all the usual suspects and a few of the keepers will bring out some animals for an up close show for all you animal lovers! Ive been to zoos all over the world, AND of course this place doesnt compare to San Diego. or the Bronx Zoos ....STOP COMPARING IT!!!.. Massachusetts doesnt invest in their zoos, we just dont have the funding...its like comparing a Ferrari to a Hyundai... Stone zoo has a small number of animals and its not glitz and its not always pretty but its informative and it comes down to what you take from it. Funding around the country for zoos is getting smaller and feel fortunate that you have Franklin and the Stone to enjoy. Zoos are closing around the US, take a moment and enjoy what you have... throw on your jeans... take your baby brother, or your little niece ...hell, come by my house and Ill go with you...and enjoy your visit to the Stone Zoo!

This is the worst zoo Ive ever been to. I never take the time to review anything but this was so bad that I actually felt the need to warn any potential visitors to not waste the $17 on this animal jail. Not only was it trashy and run-down, but the animals looked as though they wanted nothing but death. On second thought, the animals looked on the verge of death anyway in their hot, miserable, unbearably smelly "exhibits". The reindeer that the zoo had on display actually looked as though it had skin cancer, as it had bald patches on its fur where skin showed. The single llama that the zoo had was in an exhibit that was purely a grass field and nothing else. The gift shop was so bad looking that when I first looked at it I thought it was being worked on. It wasnt. This zoo was so below average in its maintenance and treatment of its animals that I felt myself feeling extremely pitiful for them and didnt even want to look at most of them. I could go on longer but to save you the time I will finish with this: if any family is looking for something fun to do in MA and is potentially visiting Stone Zoo, please, spend your money on something worthwhile.

The Stone Zoo is a great small zoo that is close by to where I live. I have been there at least twice before in the past six years previous to my most recent visit. I like the zoo and find it quite enjoyable. Some of the reviews I have seen here on Google were written by people who do not know about the budget cuts the zoo has gone through over the years. The zoo has re-established itself as a much smaller entity in order to survive. Also the place smells bad in some places because it is is a zoo. That happens sometimes. Get over it. The jaguar, snow lepoard and cougar were beautiful and we were able to see them up close with no crowds. The two otters were curious and seemed to listen when you taking about them intently. The yak was very amusing and would call back to you if your responded to his braying. Overall I enjoyed my visit. A great place for little kids. Parents with strollers should think twice since the paths are not all smooth and there are hills.

The animals at this zoo are kept in small confined areas in depressing conditions. The overall feeling is that of disrepair. The Canada Lynx was pacing around its small enclosure, which is a sign of distress at being confined. Many of the birds were in concrete rooms with no natural light, their only sky being blue paint on cinder block walls. The bald eagles sat stoically in the winter air in a wooden open enclosure, the netting only a few feet above their heads. The flamingos huddled in a muddy pond. It was really heartbreaking to see. These animals deserve to be able to roam and fly free in a well designed sanctuary if they are not able to survive in the wild. How can this treatment of animals still be acceptable in Massachusetts in 2017?

Weve been coming here since the kids were small and enjoy it so much that we purchase a membership every year to help support the work it does. Though smaller than the Franklin Park Zoo, the Stone Zoo has its share of great exhibits, including its black bears, Smoky and Bubba, and its flamingo exhibit. You can easy see all the exhibits in an hour, or leisurely stroll through for a couple hours. There is also a playground for the kids right next to the petting zoo to give the youngsters a chance to use up some of that limitless energy they have. The staff is friendly and theres also plenty of parking. Make a point to go here if you are in the area; its worth a visit!

Great Zoo for the residents of the North Shore. AZA accredited, up to date (though sometimes rough-around-the-edges exhibits), well cared for animals, many local species and some great large cats. Check out the otter Sushi or the endangered Mexican Grey Wolf pack for a special treat. Education programs are offered, camps, bird shows and added value programs every day! See animal feeds, meet keepers, ask educators and dont forget to visit the Animal Discovery Center by the Llamas to meet animals up close and touch animal bio-facts. Check out the Franklin Park Zoo south of the city for some different species, including larger African savanna animals.
