There was a time when I loved coming to Steel City....for both food during the day and music at night. Sadly, since new ownership has taken over, the place is not what it was. The changes in the menu are not improvements...we were just in last week, and I ordered a hummus wrap that Ive had many times. This time, there was everything BUT hummus on it! Also, the place was, literally, swarming with flies! And for a cool, fall morning, I was really shocked by this! I hat to keep swatting the flies away from mine and my kids food...I can only imagine what the kitchen must look like! The people working behind the counter did not seem to have a clue as to what they were doing....The people there have never been overly friendly, but they have at least known what to do. One of the girls was eating behind the counter, licking her fingers, and then grabbed a plastic cup, fingers inside the cup, for my kids milk!! I was so disgusted...Im sure we wont be going back, which makes me sad, because I once liked it for a quick bite to eat!

Most of these negative reviews sound like illiterate goons who walked into a small-town cafe/venue expecting a 5 star restaurant or performing arts center. Steel City is perfect for what it is. And with the new ownership and renovations, its on its way to become an even bigger hot spot in the Philly suburbs. Its intimate (5 stars). The food is delicious and decently priced (3.5-4 stars) Its trendy and family friendly (5 stars) The service is great most times (4 stars) The sound is ever-improving, and better than 90% other venues of its size (4 stars) But most importantly, its run by people who care about the community. It has stayed open through the hardest times and shown that whoever is managing this space wants to do more than just profit on business - and theyre constantly looking for ways to improve. That alone is enough to give 5 stars.

"Worst Staff in the Phila Area" is absoltley right...The service is horrible and the food and beverage offerings are mediocre at best. The place feels more like a cold, drafty garage than a coffee house - high ceilings, poor "warehouse type" lighting and very uncomfortable, rickety and worn furniture. Also, the place is usually teeming with high school kids. Went there for a show one night and never went back...if you go to see live music, make sure not to leave until the shows over...youll be "disrupting" something and get more than your share of dirty looks on your way back in. Try Artisans right across the street - Classy and clean, great coffee and pastries and warm, cordial staff. Artisans is top notch!!!

As a musician AND music lover, I can say that this is probably the best place in Chester County to hear (and play) original music. It has a very comfortable vibe, and the intimate setting keeps everyone close to the stage. Very few venue owners have guts and commitment to the music to ask their patrons (nicely) to be quiet and listen to the performers, but these guys do. They have also worked hard to foster a community of local musicians, and do a lot to help beginning and upcoming ones have a place to be heard and get better. Steel City is great! (The food, coffees and desserts are great, too.)

The tea selection is awesome and they will do it hot or iced. We got the nachos and the chicken/onion/gouda Flatbread. Both were out of this world and VERY reasonably priced. The inside is really nice - the tables are great and theres plenty of space. The baked goods are also fantastic. The new owners are doing a great job. When there was a tiny mix up with my tea, they raced to fix it for me immediately. They clearly really care about their customers. I will be visiting Steel City much more often from now on!

Their espresso is one of the best, never disappoints. STRONG, great flavor, but not a hint of bitterness and a generous size. I bought it ground to take home (I live 2 hours away) and it was great at home too. Told Barista I use a French Press and she knew what grind to use, came out great at home. Foods pretty good too, never seen the bands so I cant judge that. Plus they decorate for Blobfest, which is why I come to P.ville so they get points for spirit!

We went to hear blue grass friday night and instead heard loud noise played fast and with words repeatitious and not able to be heard above the music even tho they appeared to be yelling them. Maybe if we had a few beers in us like most we would of enjoyed it more. We actually thought the first band ,The unknown ,was better and easier to listen to unless you like to listen to a frenzy of noise and rock your head to the rhythm.

I stop in at Steel City almost every Wednesday while my kids take their piano lessons. I love the coffee, the kids love the cookies (or other dessert), and we all enjoy the creative ambiance of the place! Sometimes my wife and I get a baby-sitter and enjoy the live shows they host! Other times I might just bring a kid with me.

I have been to a lot of coffee shops, and to call this place a "coffee shop" would be an insult!! The last time I had a drink, like the one I had, was about 15 years ago back in San Fernando, CA. Clean, friendly, nice set up... I have told my friends to make this place are new spot to have are coffee meets.

Steel City has been through many owners and incarnations in the 4+ years Ive lived in downtown Phoenixville. The current incarnation has my favorite coffee drinks but I miss the breakfast sandwiches of previous Steel Cities. The space is well designed and great for a day of studying or working.

Extremely unfriendly. This was my first visit and I think my last one. My husband and I love breakfast places and we want to feel welcomed. The food was okay. But for a coffee shop I think it is important to treat new customers well and make them feel welcomed.

Its alright. crappy decor. rotating high schoolish artists for the most part. foods pretty good. maximized seating means that you can barely navigate the tables. focus is now more on concerts which I am not interested in. being a coffe house seems incidental.

Its a pretty relaxing place to be if you just want to sit down and have a nice cup of coffee. My only critique would be that the service could be a little better, but that might just be because of the time of day I have gone at.

What a great find! I have only been here for breakfast a few times, as i am not from the area. I wish this place was near my home...Id go there every day. The lattes are phenomenal. The cinnamon raisin bagel is to die for!

The coffee is average, and their pastry selection is limited. But..Great location and a great venue for life music. I have not tried their food, but that could be another star. I have just not tried it.

Ed & Laura, the new owners, have rejuvenated Steel City Coffee House. The vibe is wonderful, as are the locally sourced, delicious food and Hobo Eds coffee. Steel City is a community treasure.
