I have visited many, many wineries across VA and this is by far the most disappointing winery Ive visited thus far (for a number of reasons, which I will elaborate on in this review). Long story short, I will never visit this winery again. Ill start with the positives. The building is beautiful, very rustic feel, screened in porch / patio, nice fireplace. Overall, the scenery INSIDE the building is nice, and that is why there is 1 star. Now for the negatives: 1) The wine. It tastes like vinegar. I thought maybe I got a bad bottle, but upon MULTIPLE visits every single glass, of every variation of red, had a strong vinegar flavor. I was never able to finish a glass & I LOVE red wine. I even brought my husband, friends, family, and they all agreed that the red wine was just not right. Need to improve that asap. 2) The OUTSIDE scenery (admittedly, the place is SLOWLY improving). There is a burn pile as the first thing you see when you pull in, overgrown landscaping (maybe this is on purpose but it is an eyesore) and HUGE rocks in the driveway that make it difficult to walk to the winery in heels or pushing a baby stroller. 3) Customer service is sub-par, if not awful. LET ME BE CLEAR, this comment is directly entirely at the owner & NOT the various folks Ive seen working behind the wine bar basically killing themselves because they are understaffed. Ive been to this winery numerous times, and EVERY SINGLE TIME I have seen the owner sitting with a few people (likely family) at a small table in the corner, not speaking to anyone, drinking wine the entire time (glass after glass). Thats not my issue, though, as it is your winery do what you want, but on every single visit he made NO effort to greet guests, and at one heavily-packed event he sat in the corner drinking while the staff ran around running out of glasses, food, etc. And the owner didnt bat an eye. Didnt get up to help, didnt seem concerned at all. I was so disgusted by this, and after reading a few other reviews on various sites (Yelp, and such), I get the sense this is par for the course. Not worth the time, or effort, to get to this winery. There are so many other wineries that blow this one out of the water. My advice to the owner, fix your wine, fix your scenery, and adjust your attitude and maybe youll find more people want to visit your winery.

Aside from the building being visually appealing nothing was worth the time or money. For starters the tasting was $15 for 5 wines that werent impressive. Additionally we had a group of about 15 people and had planned on purchasing some bottles of wine and sitting down to drink wine after the tasting. Well that was shot down by the money hungry owner. Apparently in addition to the $15 wine tasting fee per person we would have had to pay an additional $15-$30 per person just to sit at a table. Yes to sit at a table! Those fees are strictly for "the use of space" according to the website. No wine included. That is probably why the place was practically empty. Had we known this in advance we would have never even gone there. Needless to say they missed out on a lot of money to made from our group. Who wants to go to a winery, stand for a 5 wine tasting and then pay more just to have a seat and then even more to have some wine. Yeah no one. You can go to Hartwood Winery or Morais Vineyard for better wines and service. Hartwood Winery was only $7 for a tasting of 10-12 wines and the wine and staff was amazing and very welcoming. Morais was super busy and had no problem accommodating our group with a place to sit and a server at no charge....yes no charge. We paid for the tastings and wine we purchased. No fee to "use space" to sit down. In conclusion, do not waste your time or money here....go somewhere else.

Superb wines and quality music in a relaxing atmosphere. Grey Horse Vineyards is tucked away into a quiet corner of Southern Fauquier County and well worth the visit. Go and check it out for yourself and you will not be disappointed! I am also a neighbor and the comments mentioned here are irresponsible about the bird cannon. This is a farming community. You hear tractors, roosters, rifles, cannons (lol) mowers, donkeys, cows, horses, etc on any given day. We are also in close proximity to Quantico Marine Base and all the sounds of freedom with training involved there. It is wonderful to have the winery here amongst us but do go see for yourself!

They are constantly shooting what sounds like a cannon in attempt to scare the birds. It scares the neighbors animals. When does wine and guns go together. My parents live next door to the winery and my sister lives behind them. I live down the road from the winery and I can also hear it. It us very disruptiv. I would not recommed this winery. I have gone to alot of wineries in Fauquier county and they dont have to shoot guns to scare off birds. And a person doesnt have to go to this winery in order to hear the cannon go off. Even when they are closed the cannon sounds continue. You can probably hear it on the other side of route 17

Could of been better. The atmosphere was great. It is a nice set up; however, the wine was not what I was expecting. It didnt taste like it was quite ready to be served. Comparing this to other wineries that we frequent, this price was far too high for servings that were too small. We got a jug of mulled wine that should of served the four of us in the tiny glasses they gave us but it only served 3 (barely). The price for that versus other places was not okay. I will not be going to this winery again.

A very bad neighbor to the people living around the winery. The owner deploys air cannons that go off every min to scare birds away. From sunrise to sunset, these things go off every minute. And when his neighbors have complained he has moved the cannons closer to their homes. There are only 2 other wineries in the county who use these to keep birds out of their vineyards, and only in their vineyards where there are no close neighbors.

My wife and I have been wine club members at Grey Horse winery for about three years. Every time weve been there, the wines have been great, and the service was great. Jay and crew work very hard to make sure that have an exceptional experience. I will have no hesitation at recommending this winery to anyone. The reviewers that have a personal agenda should not be trusted, especially the ones that have never been to Grey Horse winery.

Absolutely beautiful and secluded area. Its still very new, so a work in progress. The landscaping and entrance are still in the development stages. The tasting room is absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed every wine I tasted and the staff were super. I will definitely be going back!
