The vineyard isnt perfect, but its one of my favorites in the northern Virginia area. Not many appreciate the heritage of the Norton grape and that they are the largest producer of them. The tasting room is a tad small, so they can only accommodate about 6 inside. There are 6 or so outdoor tasting areas where they tend to do tastings at scheduled intervals. Having the tasting outside is much more enjoyable in nice weather, as you can appreciate the beautiful countryside. My favorite wines here are the Viognier, Nortons, Rubiana, and Patio Red (summer picnics). A lot of American palates are accustomed to Cabernets, Syrah, and Pinots, so when they pickup a Norton that has a nice full body, yet not a lot of tannin structure, I suspect they dismiss it instead of appreciating it for its uniqueness. Id highly recommend bringing a picnic when visit, as they have ample tables outside and beautiful views. They have really great jazz and bluegrass events here too. Ive never had an issue of rudeness with their staff, but then again, I havent tried to bring a bunch of children (I never see this at vineyards - who does that?). My only pet peeve after going here for a few years is that they still dont have a bigger facility with bathrooms, as others have mentioned. Theyll get there soon enough...

No one greeted us when we walked up to the counter next to the sign that says "sign up for tastings here," despite the fact that three staff members were standing there. It was our first time at the winery. After some time passed, a staff member finally came down and asked if anyone needed help. I raised my hand and she had us move down the counter for us pay. We had an indoor tasting. The wine left a lot to be desired for. We purchased one bottle but regretted contributing any more money to he winery after our checkout experience. They focus a lot on if you are a member or not. After the tasting we were walking around and selected a book to purchase as well. We were in mid conversation when a staff member working the register abruptly called us over to checkout. We werent ready but given the lack of service coming in, we figured this may be our only opportunity. This staff member immediately asked us if we were members. Upon replying No, she was immediately annoyed and rude. She then told someone else that she always has time for members, and started helping them before she even finished assisting us with our purchase. The staff member slammed down our receipt and disregarded us completely. After paying and walking out the door, we agreed never to return.

I have been going to Chrysalis for several years and never had an issue with the staff or wine. Granted, they produce a few wines that I feel are a little too tannic for my palate; but, to say you would rather drink cat urine is a bit preposterous. The Patio wines are my favorite and are great for casual afternoons, especially during the warmer months. The staff has ALWAYS been courteous and respectful. I would venture to say the individuals complaining were probably pretentious snobs looking for something comparable to Napa. Sorry, this is Virginia. Yes, there are outdoor toilets; stop acting like an entitled jerk, at least there is a place to go. For those complaining about the family area, at least there is a place for you to have your kids. I think the bigger issue here is, why would you bring your kids to a vineyard?! If you havent been, its a great time, a great opportunity to learn about the Norton grape, and taste a few pretty awesome Virginia wines.

I went this past weekend with 6 other girls and the very first thing anyone says to us is, "Its good you dont have more people, otherwise we wouldnt be able to serve you". The staff inside were not friendly or welcoming and hassled the one girl with us that was not going to drink for her ID that had been left in the car (shes 29. Not 19). Then, once she trekked to get it, no one bothered to look. The guy, Keith, that did our tasting was overall terrible. Most of the words out of his mouth described how he didnt want to do anything that required effort, including answer questions or tell us facts about the wine. It was like he was trying to be a character, not a person. Finally, the place has portable toilets. The wine itself was pretty good, but the experience was not and there are many other vineyards nearby to recommend for a much more enjoyable time.

Winery: Building sits on top of a hill giving panoramic views. The grapes are grown on property but not visible. A nice and clean facility. It was empty but it was a Tuesday afternoon. Lots of seating around the building and some shaded seats available. Staff: the young lady that helped us was pleasant. She had very little experience opening wine. The management would be wise to teach those that open the bottles, how to open the bottles. She chipped the first bottle she attempted to open. We asked about a Viognier as it is a popular varietal in VA. She said that it was reserved for VIP members. Kind of a turn off that we werent "VIP" enough to have the chance to order what we wanted. Wine: We had the Albarino. Pear flavors. Clean finish. Slightly acidic. Pretty decent. Overall a nice experience. Staff was the let down

They have a "sytem" here where they only do tastings every half hour and, on saturdays, they dont even do it in their tasting room. They make you got to a freezing cold warehouse. Then you have to stand awkardly in front of the pourer who refuses to pour anything for until the time begins. I came with 5 people and we had to sit there and do nothing and WAIT while the pourer did nothing and refused to start. When I asked them about it they condescended to explain that they have soooo many people coming in that they couldnt possibly do normal tastings. Its funny because I was at Chandon and Stags Leap the month before, two of the busiest tasting rooms in the country, and they managed to pull it off. This place just wants to do as little work as possible. They suck. Seriously. Im still bitter.

WINTER MONTHS HOURS ARE UNTIL 5:00PM. They will not serve you after 4:30 and will kick you out. Staff said they dont have parking lot lighting. We showed up at a little before 4:30 thinking they were open until 7:00. Driveway was washed out near the bottom but made it through ok. Manager comped us a few glasses of wine which was nice, considering. The new facility is beautiful, just needs some personality and window coverings added (sun is brutal at the end of the day). Seems like it will be a nice warm weather hang out if they end up serving any type of food. Staff still seeming to get their footing. Wine was hit or miss. Our group purchased 4 bottles and that came out to be $127. Overpriced for quality was our general consensus. Theres potential, hope they work on it.

The staff at this winery was quite rude and unaccommodating. We brought a group of 7 people in a limo and as our driver dropped us off, a worker named Don came out and tried to turn us away. We knew the 8-person reservation rule ahead of time, and Don almost seemed disappointed that he had to allow us into the winery. The tasting pourer Keith was just plain rude, and even though the wines were pretty good, the level of service at Chrysalis really left us with a sour taste. Oh, and they were telling us that they were considering expanding the winery. Chrysalis, please consider putting some real bathrooms in first. Customers are not interested in using those gross, tiny port-a-potties sitting out in the hot sun. Virginia wine lovers, I suggest finding another place to visit.
