My son and his friends have enjoyed playing Stevens Park due to its uniqueness, location and value. So I was there at 7;00 this morning. I was greeted by their upbeat Assistant Pro, Mike Sarap, and sent out for a fun round. Last year Id played the white tees and found the course to be a little too short for my game. Today I played the blue tees and scored much better than last year. However Id forgotten some keys from last year. On the blind dogleg left par 5 6th hole I hit a good drive down the middle but played my 2nd shot at some tall trees that I thought were at the far corner of the dogleg. You need to choose to play conservatively to the right of those trees or take a risky short cut left of the trees. And on the 16th hole I forgot to try to fade a shot off the tee around the trees on the right. I laid up in the middle of the fairway but too short for a safe shot over the creek and up the steep bank to a long left green. Next time Ill remember! My memories of the course will certainly be the hills and the views of the downtown Dallas skyline. Head pro, Jim Henderson, (27 years on the job!) told me Stevens Park GC was used as the venue for some key scenes in the TV show "Dallas" for those skyline shots. Ill also remember some special holes that rank high in the "fun factor". I hit a long-iron off the 3rd tee based on advice from my last years playing partners as the hole is a 90 degree right turn to a steep uphill shot to the green. The 9th hole is a long, straight beauty finishing with an uphill shot toward the clubhouse. The hole measures a big 602 yards from the black tees. I enjoyed the back nine even more than the front largely due to the scenery. The 10th hole is a nice risk/reward birdie opportunity if you can nail two nice shots first downhill off the tee then uphill to a pretty green with a colorful floral backdrop of nandinas and roses. Then the 11th tee box provides the first great view of the Dallas skyline. The view is even better on the 15th hole. The 18th hole is a rather tight and challenging uphill finish toward the scenic stone patio of the remodeled old clubhouse. Some other points of Stevens Park uniqueness are: 1) greens with odd geometric shapes including square corners, 2) very soft and dry sand in all the fairway and greenside bunkers and 3) two small driving cages in lieu of a driving range in this charming, limited space neighborhood and some shots that definitely made easier with some local knowledge help. The course was in nice condition especially considering this was late April and North Texas has received some tremendous rainstorms and flash floods in recent weeks. Im anxious to play it again this summer and fall.. off the blue tees.

Stevens Park is the first golf course that i ever played at. So in a way i can say that this is my home course. I have been playing for about 4 years, and have played at other golf courses. Stevens till this day is my favorite course to play.During the summer its a really well kept course. Just like any other golf course, you will need a tee time if your planning on getting that early weekend round, but its a great course to just walk on during the week. Its always fun when i come out. i hope they dont close it down too long during the renovation. Which btw, will make this the best city course in dallas. I read in the Dallas Morning News that the city will be investing about 7.1 million dollars on the course. Thats just about three times more that what the city invested on the Tennison Highlands Course. I love this course, and i know you will too if you are looking for a good time.

I played this course for the first time this week. Conditions were excellent, although there were a maybe two to three greens that had seen better days. Fun layout, great maintenance, beautiful rose bushes everywhere. There is no driving range, just a chipping green and putting green. There is a decent short range practice facility but you have to pay to use it, even if youre playing a round unfortunately. Ive played Bear Creek a couple of times and comparably this is hands down a better course and value. Tee boxes are well labeled w/info about distances to clear bunkers etc. Appeared course was getting rather busy in the afternoon hours, but with a 8am tee time we finished in 3 hours. Would be a fun course to walk!

I myself can not wait for the renovations to be completed. I played this golf course at least a thousand times, and have to say its one of the best that I have experienced. I love the staff, food, and most of all the golf course. With no real dress code it really did feel like a casual and recreational golf course. I know the new course will be just as fun as the old, and hope the atmosphere stays the same. I do not enjoy going to golf courses where I get a feeling of not being welcome. At Stevens Park you really do feel as comfortable as any would in their own home. Great course overall, and cant wait to tee off at Stevens again. Is there anyway I can be the first to tee off, when it opens back up in early October?

Fees are a little steep for a city owned course, but youll be playing one of the best munis in the state. You wont need a driver here; the course is very short. But shot-making skills will be tested, mostly on the 3s if you play the back tees. Several of the 4s will require a good approach, as well. Meticulously maintained and the staff are good people. Excellent views of downtown and an older, established neighborhood. Driving ranges werent a priority when this place was built and the acreage doesnt allow for the addition of one. The clubhouse is one of the nicest Ive seen and the food is great. A really nice experience.

At just over 6,000 yards from the back tees, Stevens Park may seem like a push over, but ask any decent golfer who has played a handful of rounds there, and theyll tell you that Stevens can play tough at any given moment. With elevation changes, tight tree lined fairways, and small, sometimes elevated greens, Stevens Park, more than anything, demands accuracy. Well maintained, this course offers some of the best scenery in Dallas. Great course, and great staff.

The upgradde was great. I have played this course for 30 years. It used to be ok, short and quirky. Now it is a shotmakers delight. The par 5s on the back 9 are equal to the best daily fee 5s anywhere in the metroplex. One reminds me of Pebble Beach (without the ocean). Its hard! Best view of Downtown Dallas around. Prepare Yourself to be wowed. JDY
