The best course in NY State, by far. If you are a NY resident, it is also the best bargain. I have played it 5 times now and i have enjoyed every round. The course is challenging, but not unfair. The rough is what makes it hard - its not hard to get it out, it just makes the approach unpredictable - if you hit the green from the rough you will probably run though and if you are short, you are likely in the sand. Im have some length off the tee (around 270 to 300) and i think only the 1st, 2nd, 9th and 18th are par 4s that i can hit an approach shot in with an 8 iron or less. My advise - buy a yardage book as you really need to know your lines off the tee, plot your way around (dont go for the par 5s in two as from my experience you are more likely to make 6 than a 4) and if in doubt, club up because the danger is in front of the green on most holes. Its a par 71 and I would say it plays more like a 75 or 76. Play early in the season when the rough is a little shorter. The only downsides is that some players dont repair ball marks/divots like they would at their own club and the practice facility is quite poor, but it is a public facility. The red and the blue courses are good too - the red especially which is like a mini black. The green is an average run of the mill track. Not played the yellow.

Could not finish the round with a 2:48 Tee time, as we were hassled on the 4th hole by 2 nasty old men who abused their power because I used my LIBERTY pass being a Disabled Veteran, they took 20 minutes trying to straighten an issue that was the fault of the cashier writing down my name wrong. They were accusing us of getting on the course illegally. HOW IN THE HELL is that possible. As anyone who has played "Black: knows the process just to Tee off, with the signing in, getting the receipt along with the red wrist tag, then handing your receipt to the starter and have him cut your wrist tag off to start play. The two fellas were less than nice and understanding. I gave them my liberty pass and they had to drive back to the club house to verify that I was actually on the sign in list. Which obviously I was. Major buzz kill. The course was incredible(5) stars but the staff was NOT(1) star.

This was the most enjoyable golf experience I have ever had! To be able to play on a pro course for about what I have paid to play on other (non tour) courses was simply amazing. I cant say enough good things about the course conditions and how friendly the staff was as well. This is definitely a bucket-list golf trip and I highly recommend it for anyone who loves the game and classic course design. I have to say though, one MUST be in decent shape to play the Black Course. It is walking only and there are at least 12-13 holes that are very "billy goat" worthy. I know some people have said you have to get a caddy, but with todays GPS apps, I dont think that is necessarily true. We used pull carts, played with a local gent and we had a fantastic day.

Staff is generally rude - probably my Midwestern upbringing. Practice facilities are a joke. When you have this quality of course you just expect more. Putting green closed - driving range was all artificial turf. ATM in clubhouse was out if service. Oh yeah, I came out here to play the Black. It was closed and no notice provided on the website - couldve saved myself a night in my car and 500 miles of driving. What a waste this trip was!!!

Nice course. A challenge mostly due to length. Otherwise very fair. You will have to get up and down alot and if you can do it will do well. We walked with caddie. It was not a real tough walk IMO, but I walk when I play most of the time. If you do too, shouldnt be a big deal ( and it was about 90 with high humidity the day we played...but breeze helped...by days end, wind). So dont be scared...go play it and check off the bucket list!☺

Wow. Lived up to the hype and then some. Very impressive course. Greens are easy to putt....once you get on them. If you hit the rough you better keep a KEEN EYE on where it went in, otherwise you will have to concede the ball after 5 minutes of finding nothing. Blind tee shots and what not, but overall AMAZING course and a very unique experience. If I was a resident I would be here weekly.

A nice course, yes - but golf is golf.....Played it a few years ago as it was on my "Bucket List"....I took a pull cart and midway through discovered how out of shape I was / am. Struggled to make it up the hill on #18 - I was beat !!! You better be in good shape with good legs and lungs !! ;-)

Great venue for watching PGA golf. The whole family had loads of fun watching the PGA greats challenge Bethpage Black. We spent both Saturday and Sunday afternoon in the shade to the right of 18 and watched the players come in. Excellent spot and nice and cool!

its 2017 and these clowns still have a reservation system stuck in the 80s. minus the courses, which are fantastic, the facilities workers and rate of play are on par with some of the worst on the island. unless you want to play a 6-hour round, not worth it.

Greatest public course in the country. Played it once; tough track. Greens werent as fast as I expected. Walking only; easy to get on if a NY resident, not sure otherwise. Lucked out and had a caddy from other twosome help. Highly recommend a caddy.

My son has played all the courses and loves this one because the professionals play it and he (being 14-18yrs. of age has played itmultiple times and won some Met PGA Tournaments and has been fortunate enough to have won a couple of times!

BP Black is a true test of golf with demanding tee shots, length, and good greens. No carts for walking only is also a big reason for the high rating. The course manager needs to figure out the slow play problem.

Worth the pain to get over to the golf course. Major Championship golf course for a fraction of what you pay at Pebble, Pinehurst or other major courses. Register ahead of time so you can make your tee time.
