Lets start with the good: The Main is a small, downtown theater. Its the heart of downtown Royal Oak. They have a wonderful staff that are friendly, quick and efficient. They show movies that you arent going to see at the Megaplex they share a parking lot with. The popcorn is very good. But this theater is in serious need of updates and remodeling. The auditorium I was in had worn carpet and the seats-well, does anybody else remember what it was like to sit in the old Berkley Theater? Not very comfortable. So come on, Landmark-spend some money and restore the Main to its "Mighty Main" status.

I like the Main Art Theatre. Its the kind of huge cavernous movie house that you dont often see anymore (except that Detroit curiously has 4 of them.) The only thing that I dont like about it is that parking is almost always a problem. Now, if you live in Royal Oak, as I do, you can simply walk there. However, if you plan on coming in from elsewhere, youd probably be better off just going to the Maple Theater (which mostly shows the same films and has ample parking... and isnt in the weekend madhouse known as Downtown Royal Oak.)

Best local theater around in my opinion. Always showing what is current, some indy films, and the midnight showings of american and cult classics. Also offering some discussion after documentaries or other socially relevant films. They feature an amazing artist who creates original film posters for order. Also have a small art gallery up front that features local artists. Great for the classic theater feel.

Ive only been here a few times for midnight movies and Im not a fan of concessions so i havent purchased anything, but their decor is rly neat throughout the building, and ticketing staff is very friendly. Can be crowded for more popular midnight movies... not sure how things are in the day! Multi-stall restrooms are nice. Parking is terrible as always in royal oak, so plan accordingly time-wise.

They show independent films at a great price and even offer discounts for veterans, students, and retired folks. The staff is nice and the theaters are large. Concessions ate reasonably priced with free refills on the large size. They will give you additional containers to separate popcorn in for a large group. We didnt do this, but it was offered to us.

This theater is awesome. It has the indie film scene going on. The seats are a bit on the old side, but given the age of this theater, its kinda to be expected. Probably one of the biggest selling points is their Midnight movies with cult film screenings and classics, sometimes still using the film prints!

Being a major film fanatic, I love the movie going experience. At the Main Art Theatre, they have that feel of going to the movies as a kid but in an adult setting. It has a classic feeling that matches the variety of wonderful titles they play on their screens. Plus, the real-butter popcorn is delicious.

We have been coming to Main Theatre for eons. Love the small intimate feel to it and the kind of movies they show. While the seats in Room one and three leave much to be desired, Theatre three is more comfortable, but can indure it just for the ambiance and caliber of movies.

An older theater, for sure, but older like a vintage feel. It felt like a clean theater and the layouts of the seats are a throw back to theaters of the 90s. No fancy shmancy powered recliners, though comfortable chairs regardless. I really like the atmosphere of this theater.

This is a Landmark theater, a national chain that runs more indie/art movies. Its older and wont have the recliner or rocker chairs but the theater is overall clean and comfortable. The choice of movies are good if you dont want something mainstream. Prices are affordable.

A great place for a movie! Friendly service at the ticket line or concession stand (where you can also buy tickets), good snacks and beverages, and great movies! Sometimes theres artwork on display in a little nook in the lobby - another nice touch.

A Royal Oak gem!!! Great theater with reserved parking (if you get there early enough), small concession stand and a wonderful selection of current independent films. Go Friday or Saturday at midnight for 80s and 90s cult classic rescreenings.

The best film theater in the area. They put the time and effort into bringing quality films to their screens, and not just what Hollywood tells everyone they should be watching. Youll also save a few bucks over the other flashier theaters around.

I like the film selections, the crowd in the theater was incredibly rude about cell phone usage during the film. It was ridiculous just how many people repeatedly kept checking their phone at a midnight showing. Wish there was an usher service.

A gem of a destination. Cozy old school movie theatre with charm and quality entertainment. Great art house fair and midnight cult movies on the weekends. So much fun! Cool staff and plenty of alternatives to basic movie theatre snacks.

The Main Art is one of the best spots in town to catch an independent or smaller "arthouse" film. Theyve been in business for as long as I can remember so they have things together. And their weekend midnight movies are a great night out.

I like the unique movies and the classics they are always showing. I get that they are trying to remain a classic movie theater, but those seats need to be upgraded. Otherwise, a great place to watch a movie with an old school feel.

If youre looking for independent films this is your theater. They dont have luxury seating or mainstream films but its cozy and artsy. For the individual who actually enjoys the art of film.

They offer films you cannot see at the giant Emagine theatre, as well as a charming atmosphere. They are very courteous and friendly. The theatre is relatively clean, as theaters go.

This is a great cinema. Its operated by Landmark, but it has the feel and atmosphere of a local independent venue. Theres free parking for patrons right beside the building.

It has a charm that no "big" movie theatres can offer. Always a good selection of movies, pleasant staff, clean, comfortable seats. What else can a movie geek ask for?

Great location for a night out, lots of restaurants. Staff was helpful. Saw "Only Lovers Left Alive". Hopeful message for Detroit in the dialogue.

Friendly and helpful staff, nice design, decent parking. My big complaint is the chairs! Too tiny! The armrests dont life up; quite uncomfortable.

Good place to catch indie, foreign, or limited release films. They also show classics at midnight. Reasonable prices and a clean theatre.

One of the first movie theatres I ever went to, and still one of my favorite. Nice and small, instead of the megaplex in the same lot.
