Guards in front of clubs are on a serious power trip! We had by FAR the worse customer service we have ever experienced! The only reason travelled 2 hours down there was to celebrate my husbands birthday with our friends at the club & casino. We had reservations at the "V" club with our friends who were staying at the hotel and my husband and I were running a little late. They let our friends in and told our friends that when we arrived wed be able to get in. When we told the guards we had reservations with our friends that were already inside & they told us to wait off to the side, which was alright by us. A man with a list eventually came over, we gave them the name & he said they werent on the list. He told us to wait off to the side again. We waited there for a total of a hour and a half. The guards singled us out for some reason, ignoring other people directly in front of the club & told us we were in the way & to keep moving over. Our friends could not see that we had arrived because the gaurds kept having us move over out of sight. My husband attempted to stand 20-25 feet away by a pillar so our friends might get a chance to see us & he was told to stand back. . .while there were MANY people in front of him standing/walking by. We kept calling our friends and told them they would have to physically come out to get us. Our friend tried, but was stopped by an undercover guard lady who had just got there and didnt know our situation. She physically got in between our friend and us and she completely ignored everything we tried to explain to her. We were boiling mad and frustrated, and I went over to talk to the man with list again to see if he would check again for our reservation. He didnt even bother looking again & told us the club had reached full capacity. I went over and told my husband & as soon as I got done telling him, we turned around to see them letting in 15-20 people. For the hour and a half we waited outside that club we observed lots of people bipassing the line, & getting in without being checked by the man with the list. A few of them appeared to be friends with the guards out front (thats how they got in) because they would come up to them winking, smiling, or a pat on the back, & start talking to them. As soon as our friends realized we werent going to be able to get in they came out looking for us, but we had just left the casino. The whole b-day weekend went terrible! We never did meet up with our friends & because of our treatment from the gaurds in front of the club, we were so angry that we DIDNT SPEND 1 penny there at all! And we had every intention of doing so before this whole mess happened. After we got a hold of our friends, they told us they were treated badly on the inside as well. I did call and report a complaint the next morning because we were still very angry about what happened. The guy took our name & number, but we have yet to hear back from anyone, so I dont know if he even cared. If you like getting angry from horrible treatment this is the casino for you. If you want to have a good time and treated well, I would SERIOUSLY go to ANY other place to than this! All they will do is make you mad! Youll get treated better at McDs or Big Boy than here! Atmosphere is NOT like they claim on the tv commericals!

If I were rating the MGM Grand Detroit (in terms of quality and cost) by comparing it to resorts in Las Vegas, it would probably receive 3 to 3.5 stars. That said, it’s probably not the most practical method to evaluate this casino and hotel, and I’ll give it 4 stars in comparison to other hotels and entertainment spots in Downtown Detroit. I’ve had completely opposite experiences at the front desk. One lady made a lasting impression, carried a bright smile, and was the picture-perfect definition of excellent service. Another lady carried an indignant attitude from the moment we approached the desk to the end when we received our room keys - we actually had to demand she involve the manager because MGM’s site / database screwed up our promised rate (which she was eventually forced to admit). If your primary concern is trying to prove you’re right - even when you know you’re dead wrong - you have no business in customer service. Period. The outlay of the casino is probably the best of the 3 in Detroit. Table games are usually run quite well with good, engaging dealers. As with any casino’s dealer line-up, you’ll occasionally run into a bad apple or someone that just needs to chill out. With craps, for example, they generally have several tables with the same minimum bet open - so if a certain player or dealer is souring your experience, it’s easy to hop tables. Wolfgang and TAP have decent food, but it’s slightly overpriced. Keep in mind, it’s expected that plenty of MGM patrons are going to earn comps, build up an appetite and then eat in the restaurants here by spending those comps - so MGM knows they can kick up the price of a burger or pizza about $5 higher than what you’d expect to pay elsewhere. If you’re looking for a place to use comps - and especially if there’s a good game on - TAP is your best bet. The hotel rooms are spacious with nice beds and furniture. I had my last birthday party in a corner luxury suite here, and my group had a lot of fun. On another occasion, we checked into a standard suite and the bathroom was left a mess - the tub hadn’t been cleaned, and the garbage cans were filled with trash. Other than that, stays at this hotel have been quite pleasant. Now on to the spa and pool, which is the best of the 3 casino hotels / resorts in town. It comes with a luxurious infinity edge pool, jacuzzi, and steam room. The changing rooms are generally well stocked with lemon / lime water and fresh iced tea, all complimentary. Friendly attendants are also frequently walking around to ensure the area remains clean. Finally, the parking garage - Pretty good! As far as I can tell, it’s free 24/7, and they don’t card you or charge you for special events, like some other nearby establishments ;) I usually see security around, and the structure feels safe.

Firstly, the only reason I rated this top-rated resort/casino 3 stars was because of its inability to emulate a real Las Vegas experience...perhaps thats not the MGMs intention. But, from a customers perspective, thats what we look for...MGM Grand Detroit doesnt cut it. We arrived early on a Saturday evening during a burgeoning crowd using all entrance doorways. The parking decks were full and it took quite sometime to arrive in the casino. I was immediately struck by the volumes of smoke inside...The only place in LV Ive been that was as bad was Downtown at the older casinos. Somebodys calculated the wrong A/C system! The excitement of entering a LV casino for me is the sound of slots ringing bells and shouting winners! Theres none of that here...in the middle of one of the worst economies in the U.S. MGM and the Michigan gaming authority have tightened the slots to near unobtainium. The machines are largely - silent...The problem is, so were the players. I was soon to discover why. I made several laps around the HUGE gaming floor...intently searching for that jackpot winning clanging bells and shouting. My eyes began to water from the smoke inside the casino so, I stopped in the RR for a hand washing inspection. There was alot of urine/water on the floors under the urinals and I didnt see an attendant...strike TWO. As I walked through the gaming areas I was struck by how quiet the patrons were. There was no shouting, high-fives or clapping coming from any of the BJ table areas...worse yet, the LARGE craps area had at least 8 full tables open starting $15min (ouch) No One was winning? I found a bank of VP (video poker) machines and sat down inserting a $100 bill and prepared to spend a couple of hours of fun. Within a 1/2 hour it was gone - and so was I. Besides a handful of three-of-a-kind hands the game/machine wasnt giving up a nickel in winnings...Strike THREE...Anywhere in LV I could spend hours playing on $100...I guess the MGM and Detroit gaming comm want to make up for their misfortunes? I go to casinos to gamble...the amenities are secondary. Sorry, I cant see a reason to fill their coffers with my hard-earned cash only then to spend more in their bars, restaurants, rooms, or spa.
