I see why people love this place. Went to see the phenomenon known as Aurora, last night. Her presence - physically and transcendently - Im sure influenced my opinion, but looking at the tangibles: LOCATION - yes, a sketchy corner and sketchy vibe getting to the place -- especially when walking alone -- but once you encounter the staff and ascend the steps, you feel and see the history of a treasured city relic DRINKS - not a drinker, so cant comment on the selection or service, but they seemed like an efficiently run operation right by the merch sales corner; and Im sure people appreciate the neon lit woman taking and delivering your orders to the dance floor (attaching a picture of the view from the bar) THE CROWD - again, dont know if its my taste or the venue or the city, but I was very comfortable to be among this crowd; not a single "incident" despite quite a few of the united colors of benetton missing, that night; this was only my second time in maybe six years, and the lack of an age demo did seem to be common denominator; really cool to be part of a community of fans ranging from under 10 to over 50; could be a testament to what Aurora represents, but youd have to witness and experience her to understand what I dont have the intellect to explain; her Warriors and Weirdos apparently come in all ages PARKING - I tried the Heritage parking garage for the $12 flat fee, and it was fine other than again being a bit uncomfortable when alone; also, if dim-witted enough to not try flipping over your ticket to figure out why its reading as "bad," dont freak out -- its YOU, not them/it -- and just ask for help; luckily a nice couple 20 years younger and sharper than myself helped me work through a moment of idiocy -- Thank You to whomever these fellow Aurora fans are; if there are better parking options, Im not aware, but my spidey senses tell me it seems safe enough to park there, again (as long as youre heading out around the same time as everyone else) SAFETY POSTERS - as a loner, one might feel vulnerable in this area, but think "safety in numbers;" on your way out, youll be one of many with posters in hand, so tailgate a group of your kin heading the same way youre headed and maybe even try making a friend while at it, if thats your thing; you clearly already have something in common other than walking in the same direction

I got to see the REVEREND HORTON HEAT live at the Fillmore when I came to California for the first time, it was like cosmic. And the second time, and then after I stayed. he seemed to always come around New Years.... I dont remember there being any food, and I remember the club being very hyped up but I think OVER hyped up. Like it was an old hippie type place, which had its time and all, but its time was glorified by the timeaand music and people THEN and now, its glorified by just Bill Graham Presents... may he rest in peace.... Anyway, it was a show as a short person I didnt get a good view of, and I knew a guy who taped it in there, and it turned out to be a pretty good live mic audience live bootleg, not that I had a thing to do with it. I just know someone who did it. I couldnt arrest him or call the MUSIC PO-LICE on him. It is what it is. And you can really hear the acoustics are a little muffled, no matter how hard he worked to get "centered" in the sound. Not to say that any audience mic is a good representation of the atmospherics... As for the atmosphere ... its A PSYCHOBILLY FREAKOUT! Very fun, but not a venue that I would go to on a regular basis. More for the older hip :-sters than my generation. Sowww-y

Historic venue that really transports you back to the old-school theatre experience down the the chandeliers and decor. And, although this is a key part of the experience, what stood out to me most both times I was there was the staff! This is the friendliest venue staff Ive ever encountered. I was treated with respect by all of the staff throughout the night. I was greeted at the door with a friendly and mellow pat down, walked into "Welcome! I love your dress!" A friendly and efficient bartender (and not to mention a nice stiff drink...Worth the $9 for once!) A friendly informing that we couldnt smoke a tobacco vaporizer inside (under the impression the outside staff had said it was okay), and last but definitely not least, yes, we were those people that were lagging to get out of there after the show was over. We had a friendly gentleman come up and ask us if we had checked any coats just to let us know they would be closing down the coat check soon. I dont know who is in charge here and really knows how to treat their staff, and/or, they just hire really cool people, but Ive never felt so welcome and respected by venue staff before!

A CLASSIC venue. You havent really done San Francisco right if youve never seen a show at The Fillmore. The acoustics are awesome, the bars are plentiful and theres no wait most of the time (the drinks are actually good too). Ive seen two types of shows here as well, an EDM show and several rock shows. Its always been a good time! Would definitely recommend. Just be sure to consider that this is on Geary and Fillmore so there will be next to nowhere to park. You MAY find a spot several blocks away if youre lucky. Also, the neighborhood is somewhat sketchy still on the lowland side of Geary at night. (it used to be 10x worse) so be mindful of your surroundings and if you get street parking, be sure not to leave anything valuable in plain sight. Your best bet is to get a Lyft/Taxi or just take Muni. Th 38 and 38L stop right in front (toward DT) and right across Geary Street (toward the Richmond) depending on what direction you want to go.

Yes, the Fillmore is a famous venue that gets a lot of great bands. Its also a crappy place to go see music. The sound is really awful - went to see Devotchka and it took them five songs before they turned up the violin to the point of audibility and they never did get the sound quite right. Far worse, though, is that they charge $6.50 for a tiny glass of decent beer and $12 for a pint. That is INSANE and infuriating - I know how much beer costs, you assholes. Also the "reserved" tables that were apparently "reserved" for people who never showed up? What the hell? This is supposed to be a ROCK club, which means cheap beer, no snooty crap, and a fun time. If any of the bands who made the Fillmore famous could see it now, theyd puke. Partially because of the heroin, but also because its just a parody of what it was. Avoid at all costs.

This is one of my favorite local venues. Theres lot of street parking in the area, but feed those meters. You can show up pay for about an hr in the meters for a 7pm show. Then walk to your car when the show is over. The area is a bit sketchy, so park wisely. In side the venue youll find a coat check. Buying merchandise can be a bit confusing, youll have to find the little sale area off to the side. Visit the top floor to find all the custom posters for an event that cover the walls. I got a couple which is so cool to have this one of a kind poster for a concert you attend, but they dont always give these out and someones they are only for sale. I have two, "Fort Minor" and "Smashing Pumpkins". I never have issues with people who attend this venue as other place where people get drunk stupid and overly aggressive.
