Best place to bring your dogs and let them roam off leash in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its quite a sight to see for the first timer. Small, big and everything in between. My two get so excited when we get to the entrance they are both whimpering and snorting so loud its to the point of hyperventilation. Fort Funston = Doggie Nirvana. Lots of paved trails. You can take the trek down the cliff to the beach and really watch all of the dogs running, tails wagging, tongues slobbering with glee. The views of the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco coast and skyline are beautiful when its not too foggy. Bring a camera and be sure to bring a jacket with you because the weather can be unpredictable. The Park also has a hand gliding area where the glider jump off the cliff and they are gliding all around and above us. My little one gets spooked and starts barking when a glider is above her, she sometimes runs after them. Dogs are well-behaved here. My two will start to follow others. Lots of friendly sniffing happens here. On the weekends, it seems half the Citys dogs are out here, especially when its warm and sunny. So you and your dog will never be alone! Owners do pick up after their dogs. Parking in the lot can get a little stressful during the weekends because once you bring your dog(s) here, its hard to go to another park after you see the pure joy in your little ones eyes. The public port-a-potties are clean. Your dog will crash from all this happy hyperstimulation in the car as soon as you pull out of the parking lot guaranteed.

You know seriously this is the place where I ended up going and I found out that hand gliding is a thing here and you can actually go off the cliffs and see these people hang gliding I think I had some pictures that I submitted a while ago but you have Fort Funston is a great place to be I would definitely recommend it to anybody you do need to be in somewhat good shape so youre not going to see a lot of fat people here but yeah you do need to be in decent shape to actually get down there cuz theres no escalator or elevator going all the way down to the beach so I have seen and Im not going to go ahead and be too rude about it but I seen some people who basically like they were able to get down but they werent able to get back up so be wary

Great place to take an easy hike and take in some fresh air. We were looking for an easy hike and this place came up. The name of the park sounds exciting enough - Fort and Fun-ston. Just 10+mins away from Daly City. They have a decent sized parking lot with easy access to the trail heads. All trails are easy with minimal incline. A highly popular dog park, where dogs have plenty of space to run and many are off leash. If you are afraid of dogs, this is definitely not a park for you. Most of the dogs we come across are very friendly. The whole trail is very beautiful. One of my favorite trails though a tad too short. Highly recommended park. just make sure you watch where you step - dog poo everywhere.

That awkward raised cement rectangle in the parking lot wasnt purpose-built as a Guinness book candidate in the stumbling block category. It was part of a Nike missile defense system, later decommissioned because ineffectual against modern missiles and perennial dog poop alike. Yes, dog-walking is a popular recreation in this National Recreation Area. As is hang-gliding, which you might enjoy as a spectator or a participant. Its fun to whoop, holler and sing arias in the abandoned artillery tunnels. It seems mortars and rapid fire guns were also ineffectual against guano and dog poop. You can hike past the tunnels down to the beach. Its nice to relax in the dunes and watch the gliders and tune in to the surf.

Wow! Who remembers 11 Nike missile bases around the San Francisco Area! Well they were there from 1954 through 1974. Incredible - Fort Funston is one of the remnants of that cold war area. That is surely some food for thought. Today Fort Funston is a wonderful park on the cliffs overlooking the incredible Pacific Ocean. It is a favorite spot for hang gliders, dogs, and of course people! Expect wind, the hang gliders depend on it and it is quite a show. I love to be on the cliffs overlooking the ocean with a vista down the coastline, it is a heavenly spot! Bring the coat / windbreaker,. bring binoculars, bring lunch, bring drinks, and enjoy another section of paradise on the California Coast

Si visitas San Francisco TIENES que pasar por Fort Funston. Es un lugar enorme en el que perderte si te apetece, con una vieja batería militar y unas vistas increíbles de los acantilados de San Francisco al Pacífico. Si tienes suerte y no hay mucha niebla podrás además ver el Golden Gate en la distancia.

Great place to let your dogs run freely on the beach and up on the cliff paths. It is such JOY to watch the dogs romp about in sheer playfulness. You can start at one end of the park, go down onto the beach, walk along the water, and then go back up another path at the other end of the park through the sea fig and up the stairs. Lovely place. Dont go if you dont like or are afraid of dogs or would mind getting greeted by a friendly pup who may get you a bit sandy or dirty. Beautiful and relaxing spot to walk along the beach.

I only spent an hour here due to time constraints, but it was awesome!! Many dogs are off leash, some on leash. A word of caution is that I walked up a dune trail and it basically ended in a steep cliff, no warning or sign, etc. The views were gorgeous. I took the 57 bus to Skyline and John Muir from Daly City BART. It took longer to get there because I went the wrong direction the first time but it was totally worth it, to see the ocean and the views. It was windy and chilly in late March.

Amazing place to take your friendly sociable dog, or just a beautiful place to walk around if you like dogs and need a mental health break. Dogs of every color, size and shape. Water stops provided for thirsty pups, beach access for dogs that like to get their swim on, and lots and lots of room for chasing balls. Stay on the well maintained paved path that goes through the whole park, or wander in the sand! Oh, and they hold Corgi Con. Definitely one of my (and my pups) favorite places in the bay.

One of the better off leash dog parks in Northern California. You really cant go wrong here. Dogs literally frolic as if it were dog heaven here. It gets windy and foggy so bring a coat, but honestly I barely notice the cold when my dogs are having so much fun. Do your family and dog a favor and bring them here for a good time. Run, play, and enjoy the endless beautiful beach that spreads across this great preserved park. Natures beauty can be found at Fort Funtown :) Enjoy!

Fort Funston was a WWI-era defense installation to protect San Francisco Bay in the early 1900s. Today it is a National Park. Its a great place for scenic trail walks along the coast and exploring the old defense batteries. Fort Funston is also the best place in the Bay Area to watch hang gliders up close. You can hear the whooosh when they fly over close above. I havent gotten into hang gliding yet, but this is the place Ill go when Im looking to get started.
