If you are a photographer do not bother with the Sacramento Zoo. I was banned and escorted out by an employee of the Sacramento Zoo today ~ I had been there roughly 20 minutes. Though I was told I broke the Zoos policies these policies are no weres to be found. And there are no signs stating where tripods can and can not be used. I was banned for putting my tripod in front of a small fence to capture the lions behind iron bars. Though many children earlier had been climbing on this exact fence they were not banned. The Zoo employee was condescending and I felt just an a** with an ego problem. The Zoo employee told my husband I could return the next day if I could behave myself. I am a 51 year old woman who does not need a lecture on how to behave. The Zoo should in fact have proper signage. I relocated in 1999 from the Sacramento area to South Orange County. My husband and I both do photography and we frequent the San Diego Wild Life Animal Park and the San Diego Zoo. The employees go beyond trying to help you find the perfect spot for photography. The employees encourage you to get as close as possible. Both these places are far superior for the amount of space for each animal. I was appalled how small the lion area was for 5 lions at the Sacramento Zoo. You better believe I will be writing the Sacramento Zoo requesting them to list their policies for the public to view and for plaques to be made for where tripods can and can not be used. It is far more dangerous for young children to be playing on these fences then a tripod being placed to take a photo. The Sacramento Zoo could learn a lesson or two from larger Zoos on how to treat their guest. And the sizes of the enclosures for the animals ~ it is almost cruelty to animals at the Sacramento Zoo. The Sacramento Zoo failed with a big fat "F". My suggestion, go some place else and spend your money.

I went to the Sacramento Zoo for a class project. I havent been to the zoo since I was 5? Maybe I just went on an off day. I think I remember a cloudy day, and a bit chilly. The zoo seemed to be going under minor construction that day. The atmosphere was nice. I unfortunately noticed a visitor who decided it would be nice to yell and wake up a lion to "do something." All the animals were lounging around with not much active movement, but a certain exhibit hit me hard. It was for the White-Handed Gibbons. I think it was one male and one female. I arrived to the exhibit with my friend and went by the guardrail. We noticed some other zoo-goers were observing the exhibit with notebooks, who we assumed were taking the same class. The male gibbon was jumping around for a few minutes, until he stopped, and came to the side of the cage close to us. He slowly walked to our left and propped himself up between bar and faced this girl to our left. He stared back at her, and she stared back at him. This lasted for a solid 10 minutes. Eventually, the male gibbon swung to the back, and sat on a platform, with one leg crossed over the other, and an armed propped up to hold his face with his hand. He had picked up a twig, and tapped his foot gently with the stick, over and over again. It was just something about that encounter that was really depressing. I hope that gibbon was simply having an off day, similar to us. I hope hes not always like that.

Being that the Sacramento Zoo is the only zoo in the area, I was quite impressed. Im from Chico, and we just have nature and the forests, no big zoos. When it comes to zoos, Sacramento is in a good place compared to a lot of other cities. The zoo is located in this area called, Land Park. When I first saw Land Park I was mesmerized. So many beautiful parks and trees all around. The area seemed very quite, but seemed to have a lot of history. I guess they call Sac the "city of trees" for some reason. Parking was right across the street for zoo customers. Entering the zoo I felt like a child entering into a candy shop for the first time ever. The animal exhibits they had were awesome with great explanation and informational panels. Tons of lions, tigers, giraffes, monkeys, and flamingos. Of course, the place had a lot more animals, but the small representation I saw was pretty cool. Great place to bring your kids for the day. The gift shop and food spot was pretty convenient as well. I highly advise anyone from out of town, visiting Sac to take some time to watch some animals at the zoo. Not only is it relaxing, but its lots of fun.

my experience was horrible i spent 435.00 for my son to have a party at the zoo for 20 guest the event coordinator was horrible there was no need for her because she was never there only to introduce herself and on top of the they had no decoration they stuck us in a corner of the zoo by the carousel at these picnic tables with a long piece of paper used for a table cloth for what I paid the birthday boy still had to pay extra to ride the train our guest only got one ride free on the carousel FOR WHAT I PAID AND THE WAY THE ZOO AND ITS COORDINATOR MADE IT SOUND IT WAS VERY DISSAPOINTING THIS WASMY FIRST AND LAST TIME GOING TO THE SACREMNETO ZOO THERE PARTY PLANNER AND STAFF REALLY DIDNT EXPLAIN ANYTHING AND IT HONESTLY FELT LIKE A HALF ASS PARTY THROWN TOGETHER.. IM JUST SAYING IT WAS A HUGE LET DOWN ESPECALLY FOR BEING THE SACREMENTO ZOO IT SUCKED I DO NOT RECCOMEND ANY BODY EVERF THROW A PARTY HERE

I volunteer at the Sacramento Zoo, so I am a little biased. To those calling this a small zoo, I suppose it is small compared to the San Diego Zoo, but compared to Micki Grove Zoo in Lodi where I am from...its HUGE. I love the exhibits at the Sac Zoo. They are spacious and similar to the animals natural environments. For being a smaller zoo, I think their habitats are well built. They keep their animals stimulated which is great and they are very clean. They clean the exhibits daily and they are always getting fresh produce to feed the animals. They take care of the animals well and thats the part that I really like. I also think it is unique that they have the onsite vet facility. They are huge on safety and education; that is great as well. I agree that their prices are a bit steep, but that is with every zoo. Overall, I think it is a great zoo and I feel honored to be able to volunteer there.

I live near the San Diego zoo, so Im spoiled. You could fit two Sacramento zoos in the parking lot of the San Diego zoo. But theyve don alot with what they have. The inclosures are roomy, and well put together. I would rather see fewer animals who have good havitats than lots of animals cramped in. The paths are laid out well too. They are nicely landscaped so that they feel natural and open and restfull instead of cramped. They dont have every animal known to man, but the ones they have are interesting and well displayed. The identification placks give a lot of interesting information without going overboard. You can also get an audio tour if you want to learn more about each animal, although we didnt try it.
