The course had a promo that got me to play it initially. I read how tough the course played and I met a golfer who plays a tough course in Yorba Linda say that it is among his two favorite courses after playing there 1 time. It is a challenging course just like in Yorba Linda, but it is well worth playing, and playing often. I have played 3 rounds of golf thus far here, and each time, I appreciate the (Nicklaus) design more and more. Although not exact, you can certainly feel the similarities with the private (Nicklaus) course in Ranch Santa Margarita. The staff is very well mannered and helpful from the pro shop, to the cart team, to the starter/range team, to the food service. Its a country club feel that is priced right during the week and weekends. Online specials are a plenty. Pace of play is acceptable as well, given the level of difficulty. I played with golfers of all levels there from 4 to 20 handicap, everyone enjoyed their round, and the comments were the same: "Great Course." My little brother who lives in Vegas (4 handicap) said, this is the course we will always play when he comes into town. Im sure the next time I play here will be better than the other three so far since the punched greens are ready for the summer. For me, I am so glad that this course is open to the public. I have to drive through at least 9 cities to get to Corona, but its worth the 40+ mile drive. "Tee it high and let it fly; and on the green, be a divot repairing machine."

Pros: The pga pro on staff is a really nice guy, Ive encountered him several early morning rounds and hes always been friendly. The course conditions are very good, Ive played here several times and fairways are well maintained, and the greens are quick. Views are excellent and they do an excellent job maintaining the plant life. The pricing is pretty fair, especially considering for the quality of the course, I pay between $35-$50 on average. The food is great! Cons: Not really a con but this course is pretty difficult for the average golfer. Albeit, I would say half the course is pretty straightforward and open however If you do not hit the ball straight you will probably lose a lot of balls. There are a decent amount of blind shots that can be tough to track and approaches over ravines. You probably shouldnt play here unless you shoot in the 90s or it might not be very fun.

I read a few reviews about "the champions club at the retreat" and thought it may be a waste of money and time but turns out this is my favorite course in this area, we played on a friday and we could see the players in front and behind us but never had to wait or hurry, the layout here is very well done and you gotta think about your shots, i like this course so much that i was back that sunday and let me tell you that i hate driving and had no problems driving the 40 minutes from glendora to get there. yes some fairways need some work but it didnt really bother the 4 of us we all really enjoyed this course and yes i can see higher handicapped players having trouble here BUT think about your shots, hit a 3 or 5 wood off the tee, get on the tough par 4s in three and really take care with your putter. we will be back soon!!!!

First time and last time. I saw this place had an 8/30 rating on Google, but the price drew me in. The staff is great, very nice and accommodating. Im a 7 handicap and I can say that no way Nicklaus ever designed this course himself, he would not put his name on it with the fair/poor condition it is in.... fairways had some soggy muddy patches. Most fairways had little living grass. Narrow, unforgiving, random blind shots, and uneven lies are more words to describe this place. Youre either going uphill or downhill constantly. The greens were in good condition, however if you miss, youre rolling off a hill/cliff. There honestly is just too many dumb holes here. Id recommend visiting Eagle Glen, Goose Creek, Oak Quarry, Los Serranos over here.

Received newsletter on Oct 12 saying the course condition has been improved and more fairways are open to cart. Played on 14th. No improvement at all and its been like that for more than 10 months. A couple of fairways have very little grass, very muddy and you cant avoid painting your pants while hitting a shot. The course cancelled breakfast service. Half of the holes are cartpath only. The course condition is terrible and this management is ruinning the course. No wonder all surrounding courses are busy and this one is so empty. Retreat was once our favorite. Now I will give at least another year before giving it another shot, if we will ever go back. People there are also rude. maybe they are long due for a raise.

This is a beautiful and fun course to play, but the staff they have working here are rude (minus the starter). My playing partner was accused of stealing the cart key by Tyler who worked at the pro shop that morning. Who does that..wtf??? It got to a point where the starter just picked up my buddy from the pro shop and gave us his cart. This is the 2nd rude encounter with the staff from the pro shop. I understand that it is Sat/Sun morning and they probably would rather be in bed sleeping than working, but they need to learn some manner. I live only 10 mins away but will never play here again.

Played there today. Definitely worth the $35.00. Conditions werent terrible but definitely not what I expected either with millon dollar homes on the course. Played very well but wasted alot of shots due to never playing there before and just flat out hitting it in the wrong direction or just not choosing the right clubs. Cant wait to play it again now I know a little about the course layout. Sure still wish it looked like some of the photos I saw online.

Great course. It was in wonderful condition. It is quite challenging, but also very exciting with a lot of risk/reward options. We played with a woman as well and her tees were generous, so that was a good feature as well. Definitely want to play this course again now that Ive got some experience. Also thanks to Earl and that staff at Champions for the advice and course tips prior to the round. Was great as we were playing the course for the first time.

Course was in terrible condition. Rather embarassing - it has been a while since I have seen a course as worn out and flooded in many areas. Also, the tee boxes where often at the red tee distances - strange for a Sunday. You can get much better value at other courses nearby. I will not play there again!

You should play this course if you think soggy fairways, excessive bunkers, random canyons / ravines, blind shots, and complete lack of even lies anywhere (other than tee boxes) are your thing.

First time and I recommend it. Fairways are a bit firm and rough plays like hardpan. Though I understand its drought so play it as it is. Challenging course. Will play again.
