One of the worst theaters Ive been to. Really feel sorry for the residents of Avalon who dont know what a good movie theatre really is. It was so bad that we left while the movie was still playing and demanded a refund, which the manager reluctantly did (after we argued our case). The sound was horrible and lacked any type of bass or sub woofer sound. Once in a while I was able to hear sounds from the side or behind but the system was so badly EQd and balanced that it was very difficult to hear let alone understand any dialog on the movie. The screen had vertical bars that you can see very clearly on all bright scenes which resemble a bad wall paper job. I asked my kids if they could see the bars and every one of them said yes. At one point one of our kids said theyd much rather watch a movie on our 75" screen with our inexpensive 5.1 surround sound system than continue to watch the movie at this theater. Yea it was that bad. My suggestion is to skip any large block buster or great action packed movie and only go there if they are playing a movie that you would like to watch at home. Want to see the latest and greatest, then spend the money for the boat and head into Long Beach or Newport Beach and watch it there.

Hi Ill start by describing it as an absolutely phenomenal July 4th birthday. Got off for the cruise ship landed on Catalina Island via shuttle everyone was so warm and welcoming the island was somewhat packed after the boat unloaded. The USC Trojans marching band was there to top it off the zip lining was absolutely phenomenal. The tour of the island on the golf cart was fun. The kids had a complete blast. Shopping with somewhat expensive but to be expected on a holiday weekend I had no problem with it contributing to the Islanders made me feel really good. Got back to the boat before 8 p.m. got a couple of drinks in me before 9 p.m. found the spot on the top deck to watch the fireworks that were the most spectacular Ive seen in a long time. If you ever have a weekend to spend on an island local you should really consider Catalina for romantic getaway. Or just to have fun with the kids. Highly recommended.

I was in the town of Avalon on the 14th of February, 2016. It was my 27th birthday, as well as Valentines day. This place was closed around 230ish when we were around those necks of the wood. Something that I heard from a Local in town was that this place is NOT AN ACTUAL CASINO! Thats right, you can not gamble here. This place is a Movie theater/ museum. LAME!!! He also told me that movie are played once a day here at 730 P.M. only. They have a movie at a time, and it is only view-able for the 7 days that they have it playing here. Im going to give this place a solid 3 starts, because I didnt get to go in. I did take some bomb pictures of the place and around it and would have loved to go in. They only have guided tours :-(

Its a beautiful building with a lot of history. Take the tour and youll learn a lot and get great views of Avalon and the harbor from outside the ballroom. It would be great if they do something to make this thing alive again. Bring it back to a living building instead of part of the part. The stories about people most of us have never heard of doing things 90+ years ago are interesting, but not going to keep this place alive.

Read up a bit on this place before you go, and then get a tour. This was our first order of business upon arrival to the island for the day... finding out the times for guided tours of this amazing, historically rich building. The Hollywood stars used to come over by boat to party here in the ballroom back in the day. And to look at the architecture of the building, as well. Its an experience you never forget.

Love the theater & always go when visiting Catalina - but come on guys, dont you think its time you upgraded the sound system? Especially since the ticket prices are now more inline with the mainland @ $15? The 2 speakers behind the screen (& NO where else) are grossly inadequate!

Have seen many movies here. Sound could use some improvement but no sub-woofer and all that junk which just makes a theatre perfect for a noxious preview but sounds stupid for movies which have already been tweaked by sound editors.

This is a movie theater but its beautiful. The architecture is grand and amazing. They show whats new in the theater. I think they only have one movie that they play. It is a memorable experience though.
