The Nature Conservancys Cape May Meadows preserve is right on Sunset Ave, hard to miss. It makes for a great nature walk, beautiful throughout the year. There is a viewing platform toward the end of the loop (if youre in a hurry do the loop backwards). There are always lots of birds to see, waders and waterfowl. And osprey in residence viewable from the viewing platform. Pick up a paperback in town on the history of South Cape May -- the preserve used to be a town with a railroad and Victoria houses. But nature wanted the meadows back...railroad is underwater now!

Used to be a cow pasture when I was growing up but now its part of the Nature Conservancy. Technically theyre arent supposed to charge you to go in, but they will quietly harass you by following you around if you dont pay them the contribution, even if youre only using the road that goes to the beach. Hey folks, its not a toll road! One woman working there actually told me that I wasnt allowed to go fishing on the beach, which is an outright lie since they dont own the beach, it belongs to the State.

If you are a birder, this is the place to be! Trails offer views into the mud flats and marshes. The waterways are engineered so that water levels can be dropped to absorb large storm surges from hurricanes. This is a great example of natural infrastructure in action, benefiting both people and birds! Also there is a trail that takes you to the Cape May Point State Park, which is another great birding location.

Walking through the behind-the-dunes paths along the marshes and ponds is a wonderful way to observe the many waterfowl (ducks, geese, swans, wading birds) and songbirds, without intruding. We even caught some swans mating -- and it happened really fast!

One of the hidden gems of the South Jersey /Cape May county area. Peaceful and serene Nature Preserve with many species of birds to search out. Very close to the lighthouse, beaches and farms in the surrounding areas! Check it out! :)

Did a quick short walk to see what shore birds were there. There are several different trail lengths so you can use what matches your available time and interest. Nice to see what our donations are supporting. Tx.

Many people come here for birding. But you can have a great time if you just like to walk along a quiet beach. The sand is white and smooth. Even in the hottest summer, it is never overcrowded.
