Were so lucky to have this place, and more folks should visit often. They show a rich, eclectic mix of movies (you need to keep on top of the schedule, because its very irregular; best is to subscribe to their newsletters, and/or check in on Facebook--there are probably other options, but Im not au courant, tech-wise), as well as screening special events, television shows, rough-cut screenings of movies still being worked on, short films (theyre very supportive of independent and student filmmakers in general)--lots of good movie stuff you cant get anywhere else. They also have occasional live performance events, including theater, dance and music. The lobby bar and hang-out area, with chairs and tables, are a great place to stop in, even if youre not attending anything in the main hall, but just to have some drinks and conversation. They were renovating the upstairs area to use for projects (there was, I think, an acting course taking place there; not sure what else, but its worth asking about). Theres a not too expensive annual membership, that appears to be a good value (on top of the value of supporting a good venture) if youre going to go there more than once or twice--lots of discounts, and events that are free for members. Some folks say they dont want to go there because theyre concerned about "that part of town." Dumb attitude. This is a vibrant, interesting part of Dallas and Oak Cliff (right next door to the Oak Cliff Cultural Center and its art exhibits and other events), in which Ive never felt uneasy or concerned for my safety, any more than anywhere else in Dallas. So dont let that old attitude keep you away. And dont be afraid of the hipsters either; they dont bite, and most of the folks Ive encountered at the Texas Theatre were friendly, especially those running it and working there.

For our first visit we totally enjoyed the evening. The owners did a fabulous job planning the 85th anniversary of the opening of the theater. We got their early and enjoyed a Campisis pizza & iced tea before the show. They have a full bar but were NA for the night. There was an introduction with a brief history of the theatre, its developments, ownership and highlights in history. The seats are comfortable enough for an evening, but dont expect SMG. The screen is huge and good visibility & sound from all seats. One theatre. We saw vintage 35mm film clips that were shown at the actual opening of the theatre in 1931. There was a Mickey Mouse flick. Then the feature movie: Buster Keaton in Parlor, Bedroom, Bath. It was a very good quality black and white picture & sound and the projectors worked flawlessly. The movie of course was hysterical, slap stick and very risqué for the period. I would like to thank the owners and everyone involved in the event, as well as the eclectic folks who shared the evening with us, some in blue & purple hair, some in retro/vintage dress, hats, jewelry, makeup. It was a very classy night out. Oh and cant forget watching the LIVE attempt to open the safe that was to have been left decades unopened and the live feed of chatter after the movie, you guys are such kooks! I just loved the whole thing! We will definitely be back. This was also the first event by the New "Cult Movie Fanatics" meetup group, find us on meetup for more great events in the DFW area.

Yes, it is very historic. On November 22, 1963, this is where Lee Harvey Oswald slipped in (without paying) while Dallas Police vehicles, with their sirens blaring, were racing up and down Jefferson Avenue in search of a suspect who had just gunned down Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit several blocks away. Oswald was noticed acting suspiciously, cowering with his back to the police vehicles, by a local shoe store salesman. He saw Oswald slip into the theater without paying. This is how the police knew that there was a possible suspect in the building. When approached by the police why sitting in the theater, Oswald reached for his pistol and there was an immediately skirmish. This is why, when you see photos of Oswald after he had been apprehended, that he has a cut over his eye. It is where the officer hit him while they struggled.

Such a cool place! I recently went to Texas Theatre for a showing of Roadhouse. The theatre has great Dallas history and they show a great variety of movies and host different events. The interior still has an old school vibe and there is a great bar! The bar has a good selection of beer and fun cocktails that you can order and take into the movie. The service was friendly and attentive at the bar and it was fun to hang out with moviegoers before the show started. Sign up for Texas Theatres newsletter to stay up to date of all their movies and special events!

This is a great little theater to visit. The historic quality is a fine touch on a smooth experience. Staff was super friendly, and the drink options at the bar inside were even better than expected. You might need to park a few blocks away or more depending on time and type of event, but its still easy to handle. There are parking meters on the street, but they dont apply after 4pm (if I remember correctly), and on weekends. There are some nice little restaurants in the vicinity for a quick bite before an event too.

We held an event here for a brand that we were promoting in Dallas during a tour. The Texas Theatre represented an excellent value for the money and I highly recommend it. I coordinated with Barak and Mary Katherine helped on the day of the event. Both were excellent at customer service and made everything so extremely easy. I cant say enough good things about this super cool, historic landmark and the staff that keeps it going. Lastly, the beer selection is right on so definitely check it out if you are considering.

The movie was great! We love the historical aspect of the theater! Only problem is that my husband asked for the senior citizen discount and when I looked at our tickets this morning I noticed that he didnt get it. I should have checked the receipt last night but we were running late and had popcorn and sodas too. I shouldnt have to double check! I know its only 2.50 difference but its about the honesty, not the money! We will definitely check the receipt next time!

I’m addicted to the Texas Theatre! It’s a fabulous place to hang out, have a drink at the bar, and catch a classic film played in 35mm. The people who run it are warm and inviting. They know how to put on a show. They come up with innovative ways to keep your interest. Also, there is a lot of history. If you’re from out of town and go to Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum, you have to stop by the Texas.

I take my wife to check on the showing of 2001: A space odyssey. They guys are trying hard to make it a comfortable place to grab your preferred poison and watch a classic flick, in the middle of a lower income community. Parking is a couple of block away from theater, in an open lot next to a bank building. Not the safest place, but to be honest, the area is rather quite.

Excellent venue for cult classics and film obscura, as well as solid indie film. They have a great bar and lots of participation events, and an overall feeling of community where someone actually comes out to introduce the film and answer questions. Besides being the theater that Oswald was apprehended in, it has really taken on a life of its own in recent years. Its great.
