The Visitors Center is located on US Highway North 4 miles south of Awendaw. Signage is a problem, often they are taken, shot up, or run over. Hard to keep up with replacing them. Could do better. There are several boat ramps within the forest. Buck Hall Recreation Area in Awendaw is very popular. Ramps on Wambaw Creek and Echaw Creek. Ramp on Santee River below St. Stephens. You will need a map of the forest to find some of these. Go to Visitors Center in Awendaw or Ranger Station near Huger for recreation information and maps. There are a lot of pine trees, but if you go to any of the major creeks and Santee River area you will see plenty of hardwood and mixed hardwood and pines.

Lots of trails and land to explore. Its a National Forest, so no entry fees, gates, or permits. Not a lot of places to get trail maps, but the rangers are friendly and helpful. Just do your research online first as trails and roads can be hard to find. Verizon covers part of the forest but I wouldnt rely on it. T-Mobile failed us completely. Trash left by previous campers can be bad in spots that have easy access.

Wish there were more road options to get to the rifle ranges because driving around Mt. Pleasant and up towards Myrtle Beach just to get to Twin Ponds Rifle Range is a long drive coming from Goose Creek, SC. Boggy Head Rifle Range is still long ways off past Moncks Corner either way. Ive always prefer Twin Ponds Rifle Range.

Not meant for runners. Not many signs to help you find your way around - and once I finally found a path it was clear that it was not runner friendly. That plus the two abandoned mattresses that I ran past made me turn around and get out of there. Long drive, only worth it if you want to do some slow hiking in the woods.

If you drive from Charleston to Wilmington, this is a great way to stop and see various sites and parks along the way, many of which are free. We stopped about 5 times before we had to get on our way and there were more stops along the way that we didnt have time for!

Other campers could have cleaned up after themselves. It took my bf and myself a minute to find a campsite with minimal trash but once we did we were very comfortable. For free, few bugs, and it was easy to park our car close to the site.

Signage needs to be improved in that area. Drove through the entire park and didnt see a single sign for anything. Could not find a visitors center. Probably a beautiful park, but the lack of signage makes it hard to navigate.

As a whole, the forest is enormous and too much to explore in maybe even a lifetime but there are tons of trails and sites in the forest to see. Signage could be replaced in some parts of the forest

My husband and I rode around for hours and saw, maybe, 3 other cars the entire time. It was beautiful, quiet, and serene. A wonderful break from the bustle of Myrtle Beach.

If you live in Charleston & travel to Myrtle Beach often; this route is a much more pleasant way to go, it also avoids Mt. Pleasant entirely & saves time.

A great place for cycling on or off road. I agree that better signage would help. But a little time with Google Maps makes navigating doable.

Awesome and beautiful hikes close to town. Bugs are ferocious and the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.
