March 2017, our first visit to the new Whitney. Loved the downtown location and seeing the Biannual was a bonus. We were there on a Monday and it was not too crowded. I appreciated the good lightening throughout the space. The flow of patrons was decent but I dont know how it would operate on a busy day. Getting an elevator down or up from Coat Check was a log jam but stairs were clearly marked and stairwells were nice with big windows. Overall however the design of the building was underwhelming. In Jan. we visited The Broad in LA and found the building so inspiring. It had tons of character itself while never overwhelming the art. The building in that case enhanced the experience, while this one just sat there. Hard not to compare the two, both being new and build to contain contemporary art. Nothing wrong but not exciting. That said, it did show the work contained within well and that is important. I will come back for the art but not the space.

Curating modern American art: the Whitney is bold, clever, and delightful. You dont go to museums to check off the list of art youve seen in books (or movies, or wikipedia). Ok, sure, you can do that. Or you can go to the Whitney. Stop and ask - Why? Why did the curators choose these items? How are they assembled, displayed, arranged? Take a tour here. Listen to their stories. Youre in one of the finest cities for modern art. The MOMA might get all the glory, but its also telling a very curated story. Somehow, the pieces at the Whitney gel more easily than at the MOMA, but part of that is architecture - the buildings are so different - and the lack of crushing crowds. The displays of works by Alexander Calder are STUNNING if youre a Calder fan. Go see his Circus. Ache beside the tiny stabiles that you cant touch. Think about all the wonderful technicians and conservators whove brought this all to life. Be different. Go to the Whitney.

Really wonderful - making the Whitney super relevant again. Great location, beautiful architecture, interacts and plays with the museum, its location in the city (parks, and hotels, nearby), and makes American art relevant to city life. Opening events and exhibitions drew attention, and the quality and variety of curation stood up to expectations. A lot to see and enjoy, great cultural space with amazing works of art of many different types, times and media. Really enjoyed the experience, spent most of a day working my way down the building - excited to see what rotating exhibits will be housed here, and the gift shop and restaurant were pleasant touches (though the outside areas of the museum are a better place to spend time - watching the highline or the standard hotel). Really recommended.

An excellent selection of modern American art -- I recently saw the AJ Motley exhibit and I was absolutely stunned by this artist. There are some 8 floors to the place, though a few are offices and the like, but on the recommendation of a guard I started from the top and worked my way down. There were more than a few genres presented from all different walks of life, as the Whitney seems to take care to not only focus on the well known artists but to uplift lesser knowns as well. I came on a Sunday, which turned out to be free attendance for anyone with Bank of America, so I recommend trying to come that way, though there will be a huge line to get in -- it moves quick, and save yourself the rather pricey entry of $22 (though I was able to get a more fair $18 student entry).

The museums move from the east side to this purpose built building on the west side has massively improved the amount of space available to showcase its collection of American art. One of the great things they did was to have external areas that you have access to, you can walk down/up the outside floors and admire the city views at the same time. One of the recent things they also did was to empty an entire floor. It was funny just to watch peoples expressions as they entered the floor and looked from one end to the other end. If it was a Manhattan apartment it would have been one of the largest floor spaces ever with killer views to the west and east! The museum is located right at the bottom of the high line so makes a good start or stopping point for that attraction.
