The Museum of the American Indian is a must visit for anyone with an interest in the culture of the US. A guided tour is necessary to hear the full story of the building - a fascinating building at the Bowling Green area of Lower Manhattan. Our guide was Yvonne who knows the history of the building , the symbolism of the magnificent art work in the Rotunda along with other interesting facts like the back of her hand. We would have missed so much without her expertise. The Resource Centre and shop have a vast array of books and exhibits relevant to the project. The lady there whose name I didnt get ,was very helpful in recommending some guides for teachers and pupils. A very worthy project and its free admission! Maurice 29 November 2011

It is always free to visit this museum so theres no excuse not to. There should be more like this in the US celebrating the long and colorful, but oftentimes ignored, history of the first settlers of the land, told mostly from their own point of view, and not that of the occupying Europeans. It is also timely, given the current wave of anti-immigration sentiments in the country. It is regretful what foreign settlement of American Indian land has done to disadvantage them, portray them negatively, and even decimate their numbers. The museum also highlights the indigenous people of the entire Americas, from the Aztecs in Central America to the Incas in South America. Allot at least two hours when visiting.

On the site of the original 17th century Fort Amsterdam, I found this Goldman Sachs funded museums curation of Native American history and culture to be disturbingly inadequate. Especially its history, of which the only truth I found made explicit was in the lobby on a makeshift poster for sale which detailed Columbus second act after making his "discovery," namely to set hungry dogs on the Native Haitians whom he and his descendants proceded to enslave, torture, and rob for centuries. Why not have a sectiom of the museum dedicated to honoring the victims of the European and US genocidal campaign against the natives, like they have dedicated a whole floor to at the Jewish Heritage museum down the block?

The museum is free (or at least it was when I went). Quite small--only 2 floors, and the first only has one exhibit--but well done and very nice. I actually liked that it was small and specialized because it isnt overwhelming and you can get fully absorbed. I found it interesting and engaging, and it is also housed in a beautiful, historical building (which is also home to the national archives) right off the water. Highly recommend if youre interested in American Indian culture and have an hour or two to spare. Staff were friendly and helpful. Went on a sumer weekend but it still wasnt overly crowded. Great trip. Not sure I would recommend for children, theyd probably be bored.

I thought that when I stepped in the door I would have been greeted with American Indians plus more on display, but instead I step into a large area where children think its time to practice running around.. I felt that the information in this large area was wasted information. Such as, Dean Martin and how hes filed for bankruptcy REALLY. Now I go on to discover that the Titanic has a place in American Indians history. I was pretty much Leonardo DiCaprio-ed-out when the movie came out, and lets not forgot to mention the Garment district where there is a picture of a family, not of Indian descent. Next time I visit this historical facility I hope to see just that, thank you.

Every time i go here I learn something different and powerful about native people. Whether it is people from Alaska or from Tierra del Fuego Chile, this museum represents all of the Americas and its original inhabitants. Their permanent collection of ancient artifacts from all of the Americas is the best in the city and their exhibits are the best. You gotta check out their Native Americans and Rock and Roll exhibit! I had no idea that Jimmy Hendrix was part Cherokee!!! Also it is always free and usually open when other museums are closed. This is my favorite museum in NYC by far.

This museum is in poor maintenance and short to describe dedicated American Indian history, rebel against Europeans, and their religions or spirits. It only has one exhibit room to display and it is actually smaller than five classrooms by size. The rest rooms either are closed or just repeat some videos. For people who want to relax for an easy afternoon, it is a good touring place near Wall Street, Status of Liberty, and World Trade Center. For those who want to seek to know true American Indian history and unfortunate prosecution by Europeans, it is not a good place to know.

Stunningly Gorgeous building with sweeping spiral staircase, enormous oval dome, and beautiful stonework. Two floors, elevator and bathrooms. Excellent collections and display of a wide variety of objects from across the Americas. Great giftshop, including books, instruments, artwork, crafts and more from low budget to high end. Kids age 8-10 and adults enjoyed the visit. Guests have bags scanned on entry, guards are friendly. Entrance was a bit hard to find. It is on the east side of the building across facing Lady Liberty.

Overwhelmed by the grossness of most of the WTC area, take a respite at this National Museum. It has three great things going for it: the museum exhibits, the building, and the price. Exhibits are great. I wish I had been able to have a guided tour but self-guided is still great. The building, once the US Customs House, is a Cass Gilbert masterpiece, inside and out. Afterward, you can walk up Broadway to the Woolworth Building. The price is free but uou should definitely drop in a donation.
