Anyone who is at all interested in local history should start here. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is located within the National Park area on top of Johnny Cake Hill. Not only is it a great reason to drive into New Bedford for a weekend or day trip, locals love the place too. I have been through the museum many times, starting as a child. The museum contains many unique articles. To start with, an entire skeleton of a small whale floats over the atrium and greets you upon entering. At the other end is a 1/2 scale model of a whaling ship. The model gives a good idea of what these ships were like for the crews and how whales were rendered from blubber to oil. The museum also recently built a new education center, which I have not yet been inside. Im planning to spend a day down there this summer to check it out.

I might be biased because I grew up in New Bedford, but I really do LOVE whats going on downtown. The shops, restaurants, and activities that have moved in are fantastic. I easily spend a whole day downtown and without breaking the bank. In fact, I often recomend friends from out of town, especially history and art fans, to visit in the summer, and Ive never heard a complaint.

Nice and informative museum with very comprehensive exhibitions that go far beyond the regional whaling industry. In fact, some have so many items on display to trigger a bit of information overload. A visit of 3-4 hours is recommended. The audio giude is actually about 3 hours.

Took my and my sisters family there and it was very interesting. Dad who was born in Portugal in 36 remembered watching how they harpoon the whales on small boats and the video the museum had playing upstairs confirmed that his 81 year old memory had not failed him!!

A fun place to learn about the whaling industry. Tip: take time to talk to each of the people that work at the museum. The employees will give you a lot more insight. For example, we learned a great story that had to do with Macys department store.

New Bedfords claim to fame. The Whaling museum is a wonderful place to visit for a walk through history. The kids can imagine what it was like to sail in a tiny whaling ship on the vast ocean chasing monster whales.

Small but beautiful. We only stumbled upon this museum randomly and it turned out to be one of the coolest places we visited on our trip. Everyone in the museum is well informed and polite too.
