Anyone who is at all interested in local history should start here. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is located within the National Park area on top of Johnny Cake Hill. Not only is it a great reason to drive into New Bedford for a weekend or day trip, locals love the place too. I have been through the museum many times, starting as a child. The museum contains many unique articles. To start with, an entire skeleton of a small whale floats over the atrium and greets you upon entering. At the other end is a 1/2 scale model of a whaling ship. The model gives a good idea of what these ships were like for the crews and how whales were rendered from blubber to oil. The museum also recently built a new education center, which I have not yet been inside. Im planning to spend a day down there this summer to check it out.
I might be biased because I grew up in New Bedford, but I really do LOVE whats going on downtown. The shops, restaurants, and activities that have moved in are fantastic. I easily spend a whole day downtown and without breaking the bank. In fact, I often recomend friends from out of town, especially history and art fans, to visit in the summer, and Ive never heard a complaint.
Nice and informative museum with very comprehensive exhibitions that go far beyond the regional whaling industry. In fact, some have so many items on display to trigger a bit of information overload. A visit of 3-4 hours is recommended. The audio giude is actually about 3 hours.
Took my and my sisters family there and it was very interesting. Dad who was born in Portugal in 36 remembered watching how they harpoon the whales on small boats and the video the museum had playing upstairs confirmed that his 81 year old memory had not failed him!!
A fun place to learn about the whaling industry. Tip: take time to talk to each of the people that work at the museum. The employees will give you a lot more insight. For example, we learned a great story that had to do with Macys department store.
Awesome exibits not just whaling however a fantastic whaling museum. If you are visiting, the admission ticket gets you in for two days. Free parking right out front. Plenty of places to eat within a 2 minute walk. Very interesting.
Located in the heart of historic downtown newbedford.this meauseam is loaded with rich historic culture from the whaling days.when oceans were heavely populated by the whale.and we needed to catch them to survive..a great place ...
New Bedfords claim to fame. The Whaling museum is a wonderful place to visit for a walk through history. The kids can imagine what it was like to sail in a tiny whaling ship on the vast ocean chasing monster whales.
Everyone is well informed about the area and can help with your questions. Outside provides a little green area you can stop and rest. Handouts are free and plentiful. Visitors should stop here first.
What a great find! Ms Lucy and Angel were so nice to chat with!! We only had time for the short film but were glad we stayed to watch it! If you find yourself in the area, stop by! I highly recommend it!!
Small but beautiful. We only stumbled upon this museum randomly and it turned out to be one of the coolest places we visited on our trip. Everyone in the museum is well informed and polite too.
I went to buy a life time senior pass. Was given excellent directions. After purchasing the pass enjoyed a short film on New Bedford and whaling. Found it very interesting.
Supporting the National Park Service is nearly the entire downtown of New Bedford. Interpretive signs abound amongst plenty of other activities and the epic Whaling Museum.
Awesome place for fun and info and friendly faces! Took the walking tour of the Underground Railroad - bring your water bottle, tennis shoes and interest in social-history.
I havent visited in years prior to my recent visit and all of the new exhibits we saw, along with childrens area, were fantastic. A great place to go during a rainy day!
Amazing historical information on New Bedford and the whaling industry. 2 whale skeletons hang there from the ceiling. Interactive wall digital boards for tourists to use.
Absolutely loved coming here. Staff was incredibly helpful and informative and the exhibits were very nice. I was upset we were limited by the 2 hr limit on parking

Love the history and quaint little cobblestone city. Getting very trendy with all the new breweries and restaurants and galleries.
Delightful and informative. The suspended whale skeleton was impressive and showed the hand-like bone structure in the side fins.
