1hour 10 mins into this highly anticipated movie, the screen went blank and the lights came on! To the horror of a completly full movie theater we were told "the movie burned/broke" and it would not be fixed so we needed to leave. I cannot tell you how upset EVERYONE in this place was. To ease our outrage at 1:10am the manager gave only people who held onto there ticket stubbs a coupon to a free movie of our choice. You should have seen so many women going back in the theater to find their stubs. The movie was amazing, loved every second of what I saw. Will never go back to the Critterion on opening night...nope never! Should have just went to NYC! One shining light..the popcorn is delicious. Next time Criterion have a back up copy of the movie or just do not offer a 1st showing!! NOT HAPPY!

Located in the heart of New Haven’s entertainment/restaurant district. First-run films, as well as cult classics on the first Friday and Saturday night of each month, and classic Hollywood films on the first Saturday and Sunday morning of each month. The theater does not offer stadium seating, but all the theaters have all digital projection and sound, and the theater and its restrooms are always impeccably clean. Other amenities include: discounted parking in the garage across the street, real butter on the popcorn, loyalty rewards programs for movie lovers, discounts for seniors at every show, and bargain admission on Tuesday for everyone!

The closest thing to a local indie movie theater. The chairs are a bit cramped and some screens are more comparable to home theater sizes. However, they have a great staff, wonderful out of theater seating and a semi efficient system for sharing popcorn, if you are so inclined to get the large of course. An enjoyable memory of the fist theater I went to may give me a personal bias but I love the place. Its fun and allows a commercial free area and I can enjoy myself more than some of the larger brands and franchises.

A classy cinema, the Criterion offers a moderately spicy array of movies in some seven large theaters. Tuesday is the time to go, when prices are quite reasonable at $6 a pop. There are late night revivals as well. Restaurants are directly opposite the cinema on Temple Street and there is ample parking in the Temple Street or Crown Street garages. Parking is free with cinema validation. The price of popcorn and soda is exorbitant, and for those so inclined, beer is served.

Beautiful cinema, comfy seats, friendly staff. They often show movies you wont find anywhere else closer than New York. And they serve alcohol if that interests you. The only things missing are stadium seating and on-site parking. They have a deal with the nearby parking garage (basically across the street) where you get your ticket validated and you only pay for the first hour of parking. And street parking is free after 9pm. 2017Apr17

Blockbuster films, throw back special screenings and Indie releases in the old school small theater atmosphere while munching on some deliciously fresh popcorn and even a beer. . .couldnt be more nostalgic. The staff is always pleasant and welcoming. Brings me back to the days of York Square Cinema (without Simka the white Husky drinking out of the water fouintain). *Going back today for my 3rd viewing of The Force Awakens

One of the saddest things about moving from New Haven was leaving Criterion. From the plush, yet cozy new theaters to the great snack bar and REAL bar to Movies & Mimosas on Sunday, Criterion was like a community within the community. I never experienced any quality issues with films unless it was an older film that they were showing very inexpensively.

Very enjoyable moving watching experience like not sitting through 20 minutes of featurew previews/commercials, my favorite movie theater popcorn. Not the biggest screens but still modern with a bit of a retro vibe. This theater also shows some limited run independent movies that the big theaters dont.

Friendly small theater for student and family budget. $6 for movies and $9 for 3D movies. Highly recommend. The only downside is that the theater was not built on a step design; hence, it is common to see the persons head in front of your seat. It could be annoying if the particular person is tall.

Its a nice theater and they keep it relatively clean and I havent had much trouble with urban garbage talking or being on their phones, but the 3D projection has to be the WORST Ive ever seen. It made the screen so dim, hazy and low res. It was just awful and really took me out of the film.

This is a great little theater. Their selection includes a lot of indie films and documentaries, which is great. The theaters are a reasonable size, with comfortable seating. Insomnia Theater and Movies and Mimosas are fun entertainment options.

Great place to see a movie without a throng of teenagers with their pants down to their knees! Great selection of foreign and independent films that "30 somethings" and over want to see in walking distance to great downtown New Haven restaurants.

Why this movie theater refuse to show certain African American movies, such as("Best Man Holiday")? You dont think it will be good for the city Of New Haven revenue. I dont like get the feeling of discrimination issues.

Small screens, but has a lot of character. It reminds you of an older theater. Also, they play some great independent and old movies along with new releases you cant find at other theaters.

This is an awesome theater that is almost invisible from the street. Very clean and cozy atmosphere, plus great decor and comfortable seating left me very happy with coming here.

Sat thru a movie last night with no Air Conditioning Manager on duty offered a lame excuse as to why she could not override the system. Not acceptable under no circumstances!

walk from dinner to theatre, no lines, parking on street free after 9pm and parking garage across the street, theatre will cover half of parking cost, worth checking out

Love the options and special showings they offer. They have supported the 48hr film fest and often bring back Oscar candidate films (even the shorts) before the awards.

A very cute theater in the middle of New Haven. Its a shame more people dont come here. Concession stand available. Seating is similar to the older style movie theaters.

The option to reserve a seat ahead of time is such a plus. The theater is very clean and the crowd is usually very polite. I love the reclining chairs.

Appalling projection. In cinema 9 the low definition digital projection made the film unwatchable. Shuddering pans and no sharp edges to any image.

Theyre small and laid back and they have GOOD MOVIES and they are reasonably priced. Did I mention its the only cinema you can walk to in New Haven?
