First off, Poe did not live in this house, the Ege family did. So dont go in thinking its his home, or youll be disappointed. Poe did, however, live in this neighborhood. This house is the oldest house still standing in Richmond. So its still a treat to be able to see the buildings on the lot. Each building is quiet, no music or even air flow. It can get awkward in a small room, with the door closed, and strangers around you. And you feel the need to speak really quiet, and almost not enjoy the surroundings because you dont want to bother other visitors. The museum holds actual artifacts/belongings of Poe and some reproductions. You are able to see his writing desk, mantle from his home, his bed, his first novel, clothing. Plenty of educational signs and they even offer an audio tour. I learned so much about his home and life, and his writings. Its actually a lot to take in for only $6 admission fee. No photographs in the buildings, but you can take photos in the main entry room and outside. You can spend up to an hour here or more if you read everything, take in the history, and enjoy the courtyard. (There are restrooms located outside in the courtyard, and no food or drink are allowed in the buildings.)

The Poe Museum in Richmond Virginia houses the worlds Largest collection of artifacts, no other "Poe Home" has artifacts, in fact Poe never owned property so the homes in Baltimore, New York, etc. are not Poes. The Museum has greatly improved over the past three years, I have been through a few times and each time it got BETTER. They are very knowledgeable there and can answer almost any question you can think of. Poe actually was raised in Richmond and his mother is buried at St. Johns church just a few blocks from the Museum. He was also going to marry a lady in Richmond right before he died but passed away on his was to new york to bring his aunt Maria to Richmond to witness the wedding and the place he happened to die was Baltimore, in fact Poe spent the smallest portion of his lifetime in Baltimore. . . anyway all I can say is I learn more and more each time I go and if you have not been to the Museum in a while you will be greatly impressed with how it looks now. A MUST SEE FOR ANY TRUE POE FAN!!!

Its a strange museum. If youre into dark things the tour definitely fits the vibe but it also has a Pinterest vibe to it because its not a massive museum. The staff is super friendly though. If youre looking for interactive displays thick with bright lights and something interesting for the kids this is not where you want to go. But if youre really interested in Poe youve hit the right spot.

It was the worst event I ever went to it is 50 bucks for just 4 people to go in and it was poorly lit with light and it was really COLD. The guy who was showing us the tour was unaware of who he was and I would not recommend anyone to go to this terrible place, Edgar Allen Poe would be disappointed in his house and on how his legacy was basically ruined because of this DAMN house!!

This was a nice museum dedicated to Poe and the history of Richmond. I really enjoyed the house which had some of Poes possession, like his socks and a lock of his hair collected after his death. The night I visited there was a celebration for Poes birthday which was a fun accident to stumble upon. If youre a Poe fan I would definitely check it out.

An awesome experience that enables you to see much of his history as well as see some of the architecture prevalent at the time. I only wish it detailed more of why he did things and what motivated him although that may simply not be known. The tour will take you a few hours at most but the artwork strewn about may add time if you enjoy it.

This was a neat, little museum. Theres not a lot to see, but theres a few buildings to explore and you get enough for the $7-10 admission. The staff is friendly and the buildings and grounds are well-maintained. Its worth a quick visit for sure if youre in the neighborhood or like history...or black cats wandering around.

Great experience of Poe. The tour guide was informative and helpful, the grounds were well-kept and documented. Admission is $8, and the tour is worth taking to learn details that arent recorded elsewhere, about his life and death. If you want to learn about Poe, this is a good place to spend a couple of hours.

Exhibit content is engaging. No eyes-glazing-over moments for me. Staff are very knowledgeable. They thoroughly answered all of our many questions whose answers were not addressed on the tour. They also get 5 stars for letting us go 15min over to finish up our tour. Thank you!

Informative and creative museum. I didnt give 5 stars because they need a little touch up work, like the acrostic board is falling apart, signs are litterally on the floor and the diplay of items like Poes mantel are just propped against the wall. Still had a great time tho

Very cool if youre into his type of literature. Spent 2 hours with my cousin who is in high school who is into his style of writing and she loved every second of it. I think the museum does a very good job of giving his life timeline and taking you through his story.

The staff is incredibly friendly, they have constant guided tours, the grounds are lovely and theres 2 kitties you can play with. Overall, for the $6 admission, I was very pleasantly surprised at how much there was to see and do in such a small space.

Well thought out presentation, without making you feel like you are on a track. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming. I felt engaged by my experience and gained a new appreciation for Poe. Certainly glad we took the time to look in.

I was visiting Richmond for a weekend and this was something that we had to do. This is a very well put together museum that taught me a lot about Poe. its a small museum so its easy to get through and they have a gorgeous garden.

The staff is very friendly and knows a lot about the place. The grounds are well kept and the garden area is beautiful. Nice place to unwind and take in some history. Dont forget to say high to the two friendly cats in the garden.

Stuck in the middle of the Shockoe Bottom bars, dives and condos sits this gem. It is told that Poe spent time in Richmond. That some of this time was in this house. I have attended several wedding ceremonies here. All beautiful.
