HUGH MERCER APOTHECARY, estab. ca.1760 - Having fled Scotland, Dr. Mercer, a physician and pharmacologist, met Colonel George Washington in Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. At the recommendation of Washington, he later opened a medical practice and "pharmacy" (they dont call themselves "Doctors of Medicine" for nothing!) in Fredericksburg. Dr. Mercer left his practice to join the Revolutionary army and died as a Brigadier General at the Battle of Princeton. An honorable man, no doubt.

This was a great little museum, and they had enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Stayed behind after the tour and chatted for a while, it was definitely worth it! Anyone interested in how medicine used to be done, and seeing the methods that eventually evolved or disappeared to make way for modern medicine should check this place out.

This was my favorite part of my Fredericksburg vacation. The ladies working gave amazingly informative talks and really made my boyfriend and I feel like we took a journey back in time. Dont go in the spring - the lines are really long, as everyone is trying to get their annual blood letting!

A shocking amount of history on this tour! I was under the impression that this was just a historic building that once was an apothecary but it is sooooo much more!!!
